Kept me on the edge of my seat. I would definitely recommend to my friends and family. I can't wait to read another by this author.

After her father breaks his leg during a storm, nurse Molly McLaren reluctantly agrees to take over as keeper of the lighthouse. It means three months of isolation, but she has no choice if she wants her father to keep his job. Once she's alone on the island, though, she finds it quite adventurous and enjoys the solitude. When a huge storm arrives, Molly risks her life to save a man floating on a raft. She brings him back to the lighthouse and uses her nursing skills to help him heal. He says he has no memory but she's not sure she believes him. The more time she spends with the nameless man she calls John, the stronger her feelings grow for him. But when the storm clears and two men arrive on the island looking for 'John', Molly's life is suddenly in peril. Can Molly survive at the lighthouse when two dangerous men are hellbent on killing not only her but the mystery man she's given her heart to?



From the very beginning, Winter at the Light captured my heart. I'm a huge lover of historical lighthouses and Stephen B. King excels in breathing new life to this long-forgotten part of history. Lighthouses and their keepers were paramount to saving the lives of millions of sailors, boaters, and fishermen. Molly is a feisty, independent woman who wants to be a doctor. Her love for her father is commendable but it's her adventurous spirit I loved most. The three mysterious men added such suspense to the plot, I held my breath a couple of times while reading. The plot moves at a nice easy pace with plenty of colorful characters. The suspense is countered with a delightful sweet romance. What makes this book 5+ stars for me, though, is the rich narration detailing the love of the sea/ocean. Stephen B. King is a masterful storyteller and Winter at the Light is a must-read. Highly recommend!

Don't Mess With a McLaren

This book was exciting, romantic, peaceful and an all around good read. It spoke of Molly spending months alone tending a lighthouse on an Australian isle while her father recovers from a broken leg. She didn't know she would need all of her strength, courage and fortitude to withstand the trials that were to confront her on this isle. It all starts when a mysterious man washes up in a inflatable boat during the worst storm of the year.
The character of Molly is naive, vulnerable but has inner strength and courage. She recalls all that her father taught her and uses it to her advantage. The book begins a bit slow, but interesting. It builds until the end when you are unable to put it down.

I loved the history of the lighthouse and how it worked. I have never been in a lighthouse and especially one that run on Kerosene with no electricity. It was interesting that it was also set in a pool of Mercury. I found the description of the lighthouse very interesting. It also was described as a peaceful place. The haunted cave was also an interesting legend.

The book was easy to read and well written. I think it fit the characters well with the story and the ending was good. I would recommend this book.

1950s, Australia, lighthouse-keeper, mystery, suspense

This is way more than a simple mystery story, it is a dedication to the men and women who maintained island lights. Some things do reflect the 1950s, but with island lights there still are limited resources for water, sanitation, electricity, etc. So the story centers around a young nurse who assumes the lightkeeper's mantle off Western Australia on behalf of her injured father when he is injured and requires about three months to recover. Then a bank robbers' driver is washed up on her shore, battered and amnesic. Here begins the action and suspense. I really loved the book!
