This did nothing for me. It was so good i. The first half and then it turned for me. I couldnt understand reasoning behind decisions. The writing felt fluttered and forced while in the start it was flowy and so beautiful. Not for me

Although the plot was interesting and the concept itself is very clever, the characters felt flat and I did not feel that they were carrying the plot along in an engaging way. I lost interest and did not finish at around 30%.

The premise had me so intrigued and I fell in love with the protagonist right away, who's not going to love a literal daughter of Lucifer? I'm not a regular horror reader, so some aspects were a bit gruesome to me. Overall, solid book with a well thought out plot and world building.

*Many thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity of reading this eARC, in exchange for an honest review*

This was a surprisingly quick read... because I unfortunately had to DNF at the 50% mark. Halfway through such a short book. There was just not much happening, and I was not clicking with the characters whatsoever. I may give it another shot somewhere down the line (when I see the blurb for book 2). That might make me finish it.

I received an e-arc from NetGalley for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.

I really enjoyed crowned a traitor, much more so than I originally thought I would.

Don't get me wrong, the plot was intriguing but when I first picked this up, that first chapter did not do anything for me but after that, I was hooked! I really enjoyed the characters, especially Klara our main character. What I liked most about her was her goal-oriented personality,  all she wanted to do was get out of Malum and live a quiet uneventful life away from the court and Hell.  The queen's in this were by far a highly for me, they were sassy, crude and evil. All things I love in a villain. Lucifer was an amusing character,  a caring father or so it seems.

I enjoyed the journey Klara goes on and especially her interactions with characters. The plot has much intrigue with betrayals, surprises and shocks all through this book.

I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this and read more in the future.

I knew absolutely nothing about this book before reading it and was glad I didn’t have any preconceived notions about it. Crowned a Traitor was surprising in its creative use of fairy tales and mythology which were puzzle pieced together to make an interesting world. I also didn’t expect it to get as dark as it did and I feel almost like it could have gone further in that direction. I loved the main character’s strength and confidence in her abilities, even as she doesn’t feel like she’s the right person for leadership. I liked the characters around her and felt they were all distinct. I’m still undecided on my feelings about the ending. There were some great twists, but I’m not sure I’m satisfied with where we ended up. The sequel comes out this fall and I’m looking forward to reading it.

My feelings on this book are actually a bit conflicted. I liked the story well enough, but I did feel like it was overly simplified. There were a few spots throughout the story where the resolution of an issue/plot point/whatever felt like it was more convenient than believable. I won’t go into specifics because I don’t want to spoil important story points in case you decide to give this a go, but I imagine you’ll be able to pick them out.

With that being said though, I did enjoy Klara. Klara is fun. She’s the daughter of Lucifer, but she’s not quite as…evil…as he is. Although he’s not canonically all that evil, really. Just frustrated, maybe a little prideful. But you know, that’s just, like, my opinion, man. Aaanyway, Klara is a demonspawn (angelspawn? How does that work?) with a heart of gold. Okay, not a heart of gold. Maybe gold-plated. And technically no heart, but also she does kind of have a heart, it’s just not…hers. Omg I’m gonna stop now.

Klara is a morally grey-leaning-toward-good character. She doesn’t want power, she doesn’t want riches, she just wants to live her life the way that she sees fit. But alas, that is never to be for these children of Power. At least not in YA fantasies. Nope, sorry babe, not gonna happen. She does come off as a bit all over the place, but I think that was intentional. She’s written as a youngish type. At least mentally/emotionally. She’s only ever been an heir -she’s never had responsibilities beyond learning and towing the family line. The other characters for me were overwhelmingly meh. Like, I don’t really recall anything spectacular about them. Although I did enjoy the undead warlock. He was fun. And I’m always into these sorts of stories where they mix myth and fantasy together.

The pacing of the story did seem a little bit wonky too. The first few chapters were really slow. I know that’s not all that unusual, since we’re character and world building, but there were slow spots throughout the story as well. Like, chapters that could have been cut and/or combined.

The one other thing that really bugged me about Crowned a Traitor though was the dialogue. It was incredibly clunky at times. I wish that it had just been refined a little bit. Like, nobody spouts endless exposition, you know? Also worth noting: Klara’s government name is Klara Lucifer. Does that mean her father is Lucifer Lucifer? Please? If we’re going Lucifer, shouldn’t her name have been Klara Morningstar? I mean, that’s kinda his last name, right? Or at least his second name, which is close enough to satisfy me.

Crowned a Traitor started strong, but unfortunately just didn't quite deliver on its potential.
I was intrigued by the premise of this book, and had high hopes, but unfortunately the pacing was off and in the end it wasn't everything I had hoped it would be.
Klara is the daughter of Lucifer, and heir to the throne of Hell, however Klara would rather do literally anything else. She's completely fixated on making herself useful on the surface so that her father will allow her to stay, in the hope that she will eventually be able to escape her prison and her fate.
For such a short book, it felt like a long read - sections of the book were full of exposition with little action, while the ending felt rushed and the twist was so unexpected it almost felt like cheating.
Klara herself feels inconsistent and unsure of what she wants - understandable when dealing with a young character, but it didn't make her particularly engaging or invoke my empathy.
I'd be tempted to read the sequel to see where the story goes next as I do feel it has potential, but I won't be rushing to pick it up for fear it will fall slightly flat, as this one has done.
Overall, it wasn't bad, but it isn't one I'd be in a rush to recommend.

Okay so this book made me feel so many ways I don't know where to start. Crowned a Traitor is the story about Klara, Lucifer's daughter, who's being raised by the three Queens Lilith, Eve, and Abadan, in a fantasy forest full of creatures called Malum. She hates that she's the Heiress of Hell and everything she has in mind is escaping to Kalos, the Fae lands.

The first 50% of the book was AMAZING for me. I was enjoying the family drama so much. The fact that part of the story was happening in Hell, the other part in Malum (which I found very interesting) made the story so much fun. I enjoyed Klara's cruel nature, even though she had a good heart, the way she talked and owned her title, gave her a really interesting personality. The fact that this story is so fast paced at the beginning made me love it and at the same time, not so much. I liked it because it's not usual for me getting into a fantasy book and liking the start of it so much, because those pages are mainly used to explain the world, then again, I would have liked a little bit of world-building. I would have also liked a small biography on the characters, especially Abadan. But then, after that first 50%, I got kinda bored. The whole journey slowed the story's pace and made me feel like I was reading a whole other story. I would have loved for it to be a story about Malum's and Hell's drama without Klara trying to escape.

I LOVED Lilith. Redemption arcs are my thing and I really liked how she helps Klara. I've always loved Lilith as the mythological figure, and I really liked her representation here. Also, loved the ship. Frendall and Klara were making me feel things and then Wolfgang appears, and I was like, seriously? This is the endgame? I was so sad BUT THE ENDING??? Wow, that plot twist KILLED ME. Loved it so so much. I had to read it twice because I couldn't believe it. Also loved Lottie, she's too cute.

There were so many spelling mistakes that took me out of the story constantly, but I'm guessing they are revised in the final copy.

As a general opinion, I loved half of the book and the ending, I would have changed a couple of things, but I sure want to read the second book.

Thanks so much to the publisher and Netgalley for the e-arc.

Really enjoyed the premise of this book. The characters were interesting and unique and felt real and fleshed out.
The story started well and progressed at a good pace but the ending was unfortunately not to my taste and fell flat for me.

Captured from the very beginning, this was such a unique premise! The style of writing was pretty, nothing was left out, and the pacing was on point.

First off, this book was not what I expected. And that's a good thing! This book really spoke to my dark fantasy side. The characters are engaging and the plot is paced well, it was such a pleasant book to read that I could see myself reading it every winter because of how nice it was to read.

This book was a fun read. It is the usual group of misfits who are trying to take back what was taken away from the main character. It was a fun read.

I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately this book wasn’t for me. Firstly, I couldn’t overlook the fact this needed to be heavily edited/proofread which was already a disappointment for me.

Secondly, there are so many different creatures and worlds all happening at the same time it was hard to keep up with it even in the beginning.

Sadly I couldn’t read much of this book and didn’t finish it. It was very chaotic.

DNF at 23%
Not holding attention and pacing was off to the point I didn't want to pick it back up. I was excited to read this based on other`s reviews but I just couldn't force myself to continue

The premise of this book isn't anything new and the execution was just okay. It took me awhile to finish this book as I kept stopping and coming back to it. Overall, I found it to be your typical YA novel and wouldn't be interested in reading any additional books in this series.

Debut author Kate Callaghan has written a fun twisted fairytale that is sure to engage YA fantasy audiences. In 'Crowned a Traitor' we meet Klara, the daughter of Lucifer, who lives in a realm of magic that is occupied by demons, faeries, figures from Biblical apocrypha, and your standard host of genre beasties. As the heir to Hell, Klara finds herself navigating between the levels of mystical hierarchy and political intrigue on a quest of self-discovery to find a new way to rule.

'Crowned a Traitor' reads like one of the many teen dark fantasy shows circulating syndication on the C.W. It's fun to see Callaghan use so many mythological figures and creatures within her narrative and give them new life. This story had everything that I like - an unlikable lead, hellish villains, a pantheon of creatures, and plenty of gore and grit to keep you turning the pages. However, the characters and world building fell flat over the course of the story. 'Crowned a Traitor' starts off extremely strong, but Callaghan seems to get tripped up in her own plot and does more "telling than showing" after the opening chapters. As a lasting effect, the characters began to blend together and Klara' s own actions, perceived threats, and loyalties all shift and the reader is along for the ride without understanding motivation. When we finally reach the conclusion it's confusing, clunky, and comes off like a Hail, Mary.

'Crowned a Traitor' could have been so much better with some developmental guidance to help round out the characters and enhance the plot. As a debut, self-published author I understand that Callaghan is releasing a new "edition" of 'Crowned a Traitor' and I am glad to hear that. However, this is an upsetting trend I am seeing more from emerging authors. Early readers are not copy/developmental editors and, as someone who works in publishing, these services need to be sought out in advance of even a soft publication.

Coming down from my soapbox, I am deeply intrigued to see what Callaghan does in the future because I see real promise in her work. Mark my words - Callaghan is one to watch. When she gets it right, it is going to blow us all out of the water, and I guarantee her work will get optioned .

Many thanks to the author and Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not really sure if I liked or disliked this book so it's getting a three because I don't know.

It was definitely something different. Follow the daughter of Lucifer (Hell's king). We start with her Heart being ripped out of her chest. Which, okay throw us completely in.

She is under the care of the 3 queens:
Lilith: who teaches her combat
Eve: who does studies
and Abadan.... she's just a nightmare

But after losing her heart she has to go see her father again to get a new one (which they never let you forget it's new through the whole book). We get to meet Lucifer and an old flame, but once she gets her heart she wants to dip on back home and that's where all the poop hits the fan.

We have, lycans, werewolves, demons, angels, fae, warlocks and just a little of everything.

Personal I wasn't too invested till Wolfgang came in the picture after that. I was down......

Also, that ending....was messed up 😂
