I picked up this from Netgalley as it had an art style I liked as it was bright, colourful and Caitlin was able to convey her story quite eloquently in 40 pages.

Frankie is not your normal Fairy and I loved that she was strong enough to see that she rather be who she is and none else. The main selling point of this graphic novel are the critters and what Frankie learnt about them and I think anyone reading this Graphic Novel will be enthralled. I know I was by the different species. For all these reasons I am giving this wonderful Graphic Novel 4 stars

A simple, cute comic book that combines education and entertainment as it tells the story of a a scary fairy who learns to embrace her own creepiness by studying creepy critters like snakes, bats, and opossums. The art style is so playful and cute and I love that the story shows how incredible these often overlooked animals are!

A super playful and fun story, full of Caitlin Rose Boyle's characteristically quirky artwork! I loved this book.

3.5 stars - but I'd add a star for an actual middle grade reader!

Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters is a middle-grade fantasy comic that encourages a spirit of exploration and finding out why things work how they do, instead of accepting your first preconceived notions.

Frankie the fairy is starting at a new school, but the other kids think she is creepy because of her bat-like looks. For the main part of the comic, we follow Frankie after school as she explores her new surroundings to add material to her field guide. On the way Frankie, and the reader, learns that scary-looking or scary-sounding things may actually just be unfamiliar things that you don't understand yet. Also, looking scary isn't bad.

The art style was very cute! The saturated colors were a bit too much for me, though, and I thought that sometimes they lost the focal point of the panel. This one has colors by Boyle herself - I have read one other comic series from her before, Jonesy, which had different colorists, and I enjoyed that combination more with Boyle's lines.

I think kids would find it very entertaining to learn about different creatures and their habits - and maybe they would even be motivated to go and start their own field guides!

This is such an adorable kids' book. The art is bright, colourful and cute, and the story is great too. I would highly recommend it to parents and teachers of primary school children. Plenty of adults would enjoy it too!

Fun with a dusting of creepy make Frankie an amazing fairy to get to know, and that
while adding exploration and biological discoveries, too.

Frankie has moved to a new town with her mother and can't wait to meet everyone at school, but when the other fairies notice Frankie's bat-like wings, sharp teeth, and odd voice, they don't want to have anything to do with her. Sad, Frankie heads out to the nearby forest to see what she can discover there. After all, she loves learning about new creatures and is sure there are all sorts of ones to discover there. And she's right, but it leads to a ton more adventure than she expected.

Graphic novels already catch the eye with most middle graders I know, and this one, with its touch of monster-creepiness, is sure to draw attention. Especially when readers learn that Frankie is supposedly a fairy...just more of a bat-like one. It's an imaginative concept, whose uniqueness is sure to raise a few eyebrows and makes kids want to see what she's about. Luckily, she is a fun character. But these pages pack more than a touch of creepy adventure.

There are several meaningful aspects built into these pages. Firstly, Frankie has to deal with a new school and bullying. Then, there's the science end, which introduces readers to several animal facts and the fun of learning more about various creatures. I found this end especially well done as it weaves seamlessly into the story and Frankie's personality, never coming across as a biology lesson. Plus, the creatures she runs into are not ones often explored in children books—bats, possums, mosquitos and snakes. The way Frankie puts each one into her field guide also shows listeners how to do the same on their own.

In other words, this isn't only an original look on fairies in a lovely graphic novel form. It offers quite a bit more along the way.

Talking with the little ones about animals and their importance for the planet and ours is very necessary, and the way this book approaches it is very successful. A fun graphic novel about acceptance.

Most of the time, fairies in books are sweet and delicate creatures clad in pastels. We don't get many like Frankie with bat wings, fangs, and a fondness for insects. Now, at heart this is a fairly standard fish out of water story. Frankie is judged by her new classmates by their first impression of her. Feeling lonely, she explores the creatures surrounding her new town. She judges many of them "creepy" at first glance but learns lots of fascinating positive traits about them. By observing nature, she learns not to judge by first glance and to appreciate or respect things that frighten her. While the message is a bit heavy handed, it's a quick appealing read well supported by charming illustrations. A great choice for upper elementary readers.

This is a very cute and sweet comic. The bulk of it is more of a rambling exploration into lots of different types of animals than a story, but it all ties together really sweetly at the end. The art style is a bit chaotic (so many bright colors!), but once I got used to it I loved it. I think kids would enjoy poring over the pictures, especially of the pages in Frankie’s field guide. And I love the message about animals (and fairies!) being scary at first glance but that they’re just trying to live their spooky lives 😭. Perfect for getting in the spooky Halloween spirit for kids too young for real scares.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!

'Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters' by Caitlin Rose Boyle is about a fairy that is new to school and how she figures out how to fit in.

Frankie Fairy is excited to go to her new school, but she doesn't look like the other kids, so they make fun of her scary looks. She consoles herself by working on her field guide after school. She finds new creatures around her home like garter snakes, possums and bats. Along the way she figures out how to go back to school and start again to make friends using the things she has learned from the critters she meets.

There is a lot to like here, like the really fun illustrations, or the message about being different, or a young students excitement about nature and science. I liked it a lot and I think young readers will too.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I would like to thank you for the eARC of this book which was kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This comic is about fairy name Frankie who is starting a new school and she is different from other fairies. Thus, she needs to deal with bullying because of who she is. However, as the story progress, it provides a positive turn which shows that it is okay to be different and it is okay to be yourself.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It is a very cute and colourful story. A very easy and quick read with creepy Halloween-ish vibe- perfect for October!. I loved the positive message of self-acceptance.

Review to come October 13th on my blog/goodreads.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Just like Dead Dudes this was one of the two graphic novels I requested some months ago and was waiting to read until it was the right time. And now that it is finally October I can start! This one looked very adorable and I was eager to get started.

I am a bit tired so I will write a review as I read.

The beginning was already perfect, Frankie is just like me. Hiss hiss at the alarm clock and anyone who dares wake me. :P Though OK, I wasn't so eager to go to school, but I am guessing Frankie's school is just amazing. Ah, we find out that it is her first day at school, then I can imagine she is excited.

OMG, this girl got a stuffed to the brim Field Guide, I am definitely curious to see what is in there and what kind of finds she did and what kind of things she will discover in her new town. I can't wait to meet some critters!

Oh no, those horrendous kids. Just because Frankie isn't your average fairy (she looks more like a bat to me) doesn't mean you have to be rude and hurt her. I hated that the teacher just told the class to settle down instead of talking more clearly to them. If I was that teacher? I would have definitely told everyone that bullying is bad. And some other things. :|

We see her go outside to do the one thing she loves, the one thing that distracts her from all from the horrible school experience. I had a bit of a laugh how she dismissed everything, and I could imagine. She had a crummy day. She is pissed. But I am happy that eventually she found something that brings her joy, and we did get a peek at her field guide and saw how she is adding things to the pages as she discovers new things. OH I love this girl! As the pages continue she adds more and more information, fun illustrations, and other fun titbits. I love it.

Haha, that possum had me laughing so hard. This is one of the best quotes: "My guide says that possums play dead when they're scared!!! And babies are kind of bad at it! Aww, you tried baby!" I loved how that scene continued, it had me smiling broadly.

I loved when the mom came home she listened to her kid, she talked to her about what happened at school, looked through the fieldguide together, and some other things. Often in books you see moms who are busy and tired just don't have time for talking, but this mom makes time for her daughter. Also, I am now hungry for tacos. Argh!

The ending was just fantastic. GO GO Frankie! Show them you weren't lying!

I wish we had the creatures that Frankie found in my country, but those are only found in the US. Oh well. :(

The art was just so fun and cute, I love the style and I love the colours used.

Now I just got one more thing to say, I want more of this girl. More field guides, more adventures!

Just like the title says this was super cute. Frankie is starting at a new fairy school but she is a little different. Her wings are black and leathery and her new classmates call her scary. But she is not scary at all. She is an adventurous girls who wants to explore and learn about animals. She takes us on her explorations to learn about snakes, bats, opossums, etc. And in the end she shows her classmates her “scary” is for a good reason. I think lots of early readers will love this series.

Happy Friday!

This week something just clicked and I am suddenly back on the reading train! Perhaps a bit late (because my monthly reading total will definitely be much lower than if my mood and time for reading had stayed like this all month, but alas I am still so so glad it is back)! This week alone, I read several graphic novels and mangas that I had on my shelf and waiting for me on Netgalley, I finished an audio book, read a bit from a physical read, and started my next Christina Lauren read for the book club I am in! One of the graphic novels sitting on my Netgalley TBR list was Frankie and the Creepy Cute Critters. I decided to start this one the other night and I flew through it! It was the perfect read to grab in the hour before sleep!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Frankie and her mom just moved to a new town and about to start their first day! Frankie’s mom will go to her teaching job at the university and Frankie will start her first day at her new school. However, Frankie’s first day is definitely not all she wanted it to be when kids start calling her freaky Frankie. Frankie is really upset about this and after school heads home to pick up her guide, a book she has been creating on her own and her bear pup. The two go on a walk, where Frankie gets to update her guide a bit and gets a little bit of a new outlook on her school situation. The next day Frankie heads into school ready to take charge and change the attitude of her peers!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It was a cute fun unique adventure. Frankie lives in a world of all sorts of different creatures and it made every single page incredibly interesting to look at. Additionally, Frankie’s guide book was super cool! I felt it was an interesting and unique hobby and a great way to tie in Frankie’s mission to change her peers minds to her hobby outside of school. I also really enjoyed all of the colors and illustrations, both of which gave me Halloween and October vibes (and that is one of my favorite times of year)! I would definitely read more of Frankie’s adventures in the future!

Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars

**Thank you so much to the publisher for the E-ARC

A super cute middle-grade graphic novel about nature, animals, and of course acceptance and why being different is great (even if you a little bit creepy and have pointy teeth and bat wings).

The first days of school are hard for everyone, even young fairies like Frankie! Frankie is a little different than the other fairies because of her wings and teeth, so they call her creepy. To feel better, Frankie takes her animal field guide to observe the creatures of her new town. The moral of this graphic novel is to be proud of who you are, even if it’s different than how other people are. The book also showcases the importance of safely educating yourself about the creepy cute critters that are in your area. I would recommend this graphic novel to any young reader who loves animals and all things creepy!

Frankie is a scary fairy... or is she? Frankie is a fairy that moves to a new school in the middle of the year. She is smart, friendly, and energetic but her new teammates do not seem to think so. She has a hard first day of school but she does not give up and instead continues to have many adventures and is determined to let her classmates know just how amazing she is. I have to say this is the perfect book for fall or spooky season. It has an awesome message for the kids and it just keeps you in the mood for fall. Its full of awesome illustrations like critters and magical creatures and it has the perfect message to just never give up.

A huge thank you to Net Galley for giving me early access to this book in exchange for an honest review!

This book is so colorful! Frankie's parent is a biology professor at the local university in the new town they've just moved into. A new school can be difficult. Frankie gets called Frankie the Scary Fairy at school, but she learned that not everything that you expect to be scary is what you expect.

Frankie, with her trusty field guide, learns about snakes, opossums, mosquitoes, and bats. Scary animals aren't always scary when you get to know more about them.

This is a very cute story and I give it a 4/5. I love the themes. The artwork is beautiful and very colorful. I do wish the animals shown were more unusual, though. The facts are pretty well known animal facts. I'd prefer to learn things that many don't already know.

My goodness this was so so cute. Frankie is fun and friendly, cute and creepy. The book has a really nice message about fitting in and being yourself. The colours are wonderful, and the art is very cute and works well with the story. It's also funny in places and I think kids along with adults will enjoy it. I'm looking forward to reading more of her adventures in later books!
