I should have known that I would’ve not like this book because it was paranormal, but I gave it a chance and the outcome is, it was OK, which is a surprise to me because I never finish paranormal horror

A small town in Australia which has seen better days. There aren’t many residents left anymore but there are some you won’t want to meet! I liked how it started (apart from some modern day terminology). I lost interest when the modern duo appeared when it lost the creepy and chilling feel from earlier. A shame as it sounded really good and right up my street. 2.5 star rating.

Good book. Easy read. Good vs evil story. Calrisse is a strong woman. Lessons to be learned in this story. Light but intense read.

A nice thriller ghost/demon/devils deal story. Set in the outback it centers on an Australian ghost town in the out back, a young couple that has gone to the desolate deserted town for mining work the man is involved in & the old actions of the past there. Like the US, Canada [actually this whole continent] & any other area Euro [specifically Latin or English] colonized & built over the murdered & abused Indigenous, there are going to be bad spirits, ghosts & trauma stains. This stories main epicenter is an old Catholic orphanage & church & the atrocities committed there Was able to keep my attention from start to finish & will be reading rest of series

The story was a good one, but, I did find it a little boring in places, I know it can not be full to the brim with scary moments but it just seemed to take a long while to get to those gripping moments. Really not the book for me, but, I truly hope everyone else enjoys it. Please do not take my word for it and give this book a go

Set in a forsaken one-horse town in Australia, the scene opens with a troublesome priest, Father Grimaldi, being sent to fetch something from a mysterious basement at an orphanage.

The basement is haunted by. a demonic entity, looking for a new soul to possess. On pain of his niece's life, Grimaldi makes the Faustian pact.

Fast forward a century a soul: a new dark tourism involves visiting derelict places such as Grimaldi's orphanage in order to make contact with the paranormal. Father Jack agrees to take a young couple, the feisty Clarissa and the sceptical Johnon the ghost tour of a life time. But perhaps all three have bitten off way more than they can chew when the meet the cursed priest....

There is not much subtlety and post-modernist sophistication here: this is traditional gothic fare, with most tropes writ large: hidden dungeons, unquiet spirits, the spirited-but-vulnerable heroine. Perhaps every old community too has skeletons in the cupboard that dog individuals for generations down the line, though a more modern understanding of abuse and trauma recognises how a child spirit might be unable to move on.....

For those who enjoy the machinery of a traditional gothic yarn, this should be entertaining enough..

In Australia, a haunted town Hartley has a mystery that has never been solved. Clarisse is visiting this town while her friend Harry goes out of town to work. They go on a haunted paranormal tour given by the local guide known as Jack. Harry wants scientific proof that ghosts do exist. While Jack is working, Clarisse decides to visit the haunted Presbytery. In the basement, there is a mysterious room that is locked. Clarisse wonders what is in that locked room. When she does get into the room, she is attracted to a locked blue metal chest. It looks dust free and new while the othings are dusty and old. When she discovers that there is a ghost demon that appears and speaks to her, Clarisse is afraid. As time goes by she is forced into a deal with the demon to save Harry’s life. Clarisse must make a decision after five days to save her own life. If it’s not the right decision, she will be forced to live in the blue metal chest. Will Clarisse choose the right decision?

i enjoyed reading the ghostly mystery/ horror novel as Clarisse’s curiosity kept me enthralled. I never knew what was going to happen next. It has creepiness throughout the story besides unknown facts about the Presbytery. Friendship, loyalty and trust is noteworthy in this horror novel. It’s a must read for horror fans!

If I had only one word to describe Haunting in Hartley it would be: fun.

I used to love ghost stories as a kid, from the middle aged fiction of Goosebumps, to urban legends, to anthology collections.
It’s something that I grew out of over time, as my interests shifted onto different genres.

However, I’ve always had a thing for horror and so when I saw this book on NetGalley, and noticed that it was set in my home country of Australia, I knew it was time to return to my old fascination.

The story itself was really intriguing, with many elements of past, present, paranormal, and normal. I liked the creepiness of the presbytery and it’s insidious history, and the juxtaposition of that same setting in the modern part of the story. I also enjoyed the investigation and peeling back each layer of the phantom, and I loved the nod to the traditional owners of the land.

The writing took some getting used to, it tended to be a little repetitive in parts and the dialogue felt a little wooden. But the story itself was interesting enough to keep me engaged.

Thank you to Janice Tremayne, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A well written shifting 3rd person omniscient narrative.

**Presented with an ARC by the author via NetGallery in exchange for an honest review.**

Haunting in Hartley is a book that is rather intriguing. Not many authors are able to write in the style of 3rd Person omniscient and have it be as well done and easily flowing from one character study to the next as Janice Treymaine. Janice takes you through from the beginning, meeting Father Grimaldi, and the phantom, the dark force trapped beneath the church and the story between them both.

From the start you are guided in gently, never quite knowing how dark it will be until the shadows are all you can see, blocking out all but the smallest of light. You see the years change, the subtle nuances of those who no longer truly believe but still wish for a fright, only to follow them deeper as the story of the past unfolds before them.

It’s a bit cozy mystery, a bit ghost thriller, and a touch of romance between Harry and Charisse when you get to the modern settings.

The only drawbacks I would say were that even though it was an easy flowing read, if my attention wandered or my reading was interrupted, it was hard to get back into. The other drawback was that the emotions were a bit flat and left me a bit unfulfilled. For those reasons, I have given the story a 4-star rating, as it was a book I read once, but would not look to read again.

I didn't realize this was book 2 when requested, but no matter., I still enjoyed it very much. A very creepy ghost story! Chilling & atmospheric, be sure to leave a light on. Well written and a great story. Thank you so much!

So creepy and such a good ghost/haunting story. I haven't read book #1 in this series but it didn't affect my enjoyment of this stand-alone tale. I discovered that this book is based on a real town and a real church, which made it that much more fun to read. If you enjoy mild horror then this is a good pick for you. Will definitely buy more of this author's work.

I loved the ghost story and the fight between good and evil in HAUNTING IN HARTLEY. It is the second book in a series but reads like a stand-alone. I thought the background information at the beginning was helpful, even if a little time consuming. I knew from reading the blurb Clarisse was supposed to be the main character and was anxious to meet her. This book had a mystery feel to it also, as Clarisse and Harry tried to piece together the story of Hartley. The only negative I found was the timeline during their investigation. It seemed confusing at times, but when I ignored what day it was and just followed the flow of the story, it was easier to read. All in all, I would completely recommend this book and I’m interested in reading the first in the series.

I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and am leaving my honest review voluntarily. I will be adding this review to my website EveHallows.com.

What an incredible book. I was expecting another great paranormal situation and how Clarisse would handle the problem. I was not disappointed. She uses her brain and her insight to paranormal activity to figure out what has a hold on the town of Hartley. I do not think every person could handle the devil the way Clarisse did. Once she received all the facts she was able to face and fight the evil entity that had laid claim to the quaint little town. I do not want to write anymore for fear of spoiling this book. Read the series to find out how tough Clarisse really is.

A scary and spooky tale set in one of my favourite countries in the world. Absolutely fits my read now bill.
This is a story of a demon haunting the basement of a holy church. What's there not to like?

If you are an aficionado of horror and want the spooks and chills pick this book up.

Albeit a decent read it didn't startle me as much as I had anticipated as I am desensitised and have a very deep threshold when it comes to the unpredictable.

Harry, a telecom engineer, gets assigned to oversee a project in the small town of Hartley, Australia. Together with his girlfriend, Clarisse, they are housed in a renovated and restored presbytery. Unbeknownst to Harry and Clarrise, the town holds many dark secrets that threaten the living and the dead.

Haunting in Hartley is a creepy ghost story that will give readers a chilling, page-turning experience. Although it is the second installment of a series, it can be read as as stand alone. With hair-raising moments, this novel will be sure to please those readers that enjoy paranormal fiction. I enjoyed the setting, the characters, as well as the plot.

Rated it 4 stars. I really liked it.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. I am leaving a voluntary review, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I absolutely adored the Australian ghost town setting, even more so when I checked out the Goodreads page for this book and found a response to a question from the author that confirmed Hartley truly is a ghost town in Australia! This book does a wonderful job of interweaving a very real and grounded setting with the paranormal. The history supplied, while I'm unsure of its veracity, was intriguing and kept me sucked into the tale.

Clarisse was one of those characters who I was drawn to immediately. She was fascinating, engaging, courageous, and made me want to know more about her from the get-go. I also loved Harry. His character played off Clarisse's so very well.

I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who loves horror. I don't read in the genre often, but I quite enjoyed this book!
