This was a fascinating look at something I didn't now about - it's set in a time period when embalming was new, and there are weepers (paid mourners) and warners (undertakers). I love the historical aspects of the book, and found the characters very engaging. It's a great historical fiction read!

I wasn't sure quite what to expect from Weeper, and it was certainly different than anything else I'd read. The story moves a little slower than I usually care for, but somehow, that slower pace seems to work for this one. Greg Morgan does an excellent job of transporting the reader back in time - he certainly pulled me in. It's a bit odd in the way it's done, but again, that's not a bad thing. Rather than risk spoilers, I'll just say that the book is well written, the characters are developed, and if you enjoy historical fiction, I'd recommend giving this one a gander.

This is a very well-written book about a family based in the funeral industry around the era of the American Civil War. Amongst the services they provide are professional mourners or ‘weepers’, sin-eaters, death photographers and a new innovation called embalming. These are professions for the outcasts in society, because it’s hard to attract a husband or even friends when you’re in the death business. It’s a love story between Archer True (an undertaker or Warner) and Charlotte Fenn. a weeper. Despite having a wife and family, Archer has a penchant for wine and women. He notices Charlotte as a new voice under her veil, I felt mostly for Charlotte, drawn into a passionate affair with Archer that will not only affect her reputation but that of the whole Fenn family. It broke my heart when she became pregnant and agreed to give her baby to the True’s to bring up as their own. I understand her inability to stay away. The novel follows the baby, Augustus, and I was just waiting for him to discover the truth about his origins. There were parts that dragged a bit for me, but I did love the characterisation and the historical detail.

I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
A unique story with some good twist and turns. The writing is average but the story made up for it.
A good read.

Thank you to Net Galley for a copy of this book in exchanged for my unbiased review.

I’m not a huge fan of this book. I gave it three stars as it kept moving and the characters were developed but I couldn’t connect with them or the storyline.

I enjoyed learning about the tradition of weepers and warners at funerals. That was really about everything I liked in this book. The story moved very slowly and I felt that a lot of the information given didn’t really pertain to the storyline. If you are able to complete the book you will discover that history really does repeat itself in the absolute most disturbing way.

I was drawn to this book because it was something different. I didn't know anything about weepers and warners. It was actually quite fascinating. This was a somewhat slow moving storyline, but it was exactly as it should be for the time period and topics being covered.

This book spanned several generations and followed them in their lives, loves, tragedies and celebrations. A lot of heartbreak is woven through this story. Sadly, they bring a great deal of it on themselves and each other. There was one character I truly had no respect for. His selfishness and reckless treatment of others led to a great deal of pain for many of the characters in the story....either directly or indirectly. Everyone and everything seemed to be intertwined in some way.

Thank you to NetGalley for this reader's copy. I voluntarily chose to write this review and the opinions contained within are my own.

I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately I just couldn't warm to it and only made it 15% through before giving up.

So I have some mixed feelings about this book. I really enjoyed learning more about the culture and history of both Weepers and Warners. Their roles in funerals were fascinating and since I am a big historical fiction fan, I enjoyed the Civil War chapter as well. I liked Augustus and his relationship with his brother. However, I was not a fan of the rape and incest that occurred in parts of the book. However, without giving away any spoilers it comes full circle in the end. Overall, I liked the book, but there were some elements that took it down a little.

Weeper by Greg Morgan speaks of an interesting time in history and mourning traditions that existed, however that's where the good ends. I found this book to be a disgusting portrayal of romance with a list of characters that all left me with a bad taste. Between rape, incest and murder this book is not one that I would ever recommend.
