Perfect timing to review a book with 100 Jewish-style recipes right before the Jewish holidays. Lots of pictures that help explain how to make each dish. Looking forward to making a lot of the recipes.

Jew-ish: A Cookbook: Reinvented Recipes from a Modern Mensch by Jake Cohen (5 Stars)

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.

The author and his husband have been hosting Friday night Shabbat dinners for the past few years and reinventing classic recipes for today. While there is an emphasis on Shabbat dinner, the author makes clear that his version of Shabbat is not religious. His Shabbat celebration is more of a pause and reflection at the end of a work week and a celebration with family and friends, sharing good food and drink a means to deepen existing relationships. You’ll find that some of the recipes are complex, or at least time-consuming, for a weeknight. Recipes for some classics have been modernized, and a diverse selection of recipes result from this couple blending their Ashkenazi and Sephardic roots and culture into their food celebrations.

Overall, the book is billed as being created for the modern millennial but I think anyone looking for a healthier version (okay, pass up the ones with schmaltz if you’re looking for healthier!) or more flavorful twist to some classic comfort foods will appreciate this cookbook.

There are 100 recipes with clear directions, and full-page, stunning photos of each dish. The classics are represented--Latkes, Short Ribs, Roasted Chicken Matzo Ball Soup,
Brisket, Babka, Rugelach--but these really piqued my interest:

Shakshuka alla Vodka
Rose Water and Cardamom French Toast
Pastrami Biscuits and Gravy
Challah Croque Monsieurs
Eggplant and Tomato Dip
Pomegranate-BBQ Chicken Wings
Russian Nachos
Apples and Honey Baked Brie
Baharat Smashed Potatoes
Fancy Mushroom Kasha Varnishkes
Kugel (various ingredients)
Saffron Chicken Noodle Soup
Tiramatzu, yes, Matzo Tiramisu

This is a beautiful book, and would make a great hostess gift.

Despite it being a cookbook, my attention was caught by the amazing laser background photo of the author holding challah -- nostalgia hit as I remembered my school days. I knew immediately I liked his sense of humor and not knowing much about Jewish recipes, I was glad to have received this book for review. I loved the step-by-step photos, the inclusion of the Hebrew prayers and how personal the book is (things I buy, things I make). 'The anatomy of the perfect bagel' cracked me up and was so informative. The Bagel Galette is on my list of recipes to try and while I have (and love) rose water and cardamom, how did I not think of putting it in a french toast? (thank you Jake Cohen). I learned quite a bit about Jewish cooking and traditions through this book, and it's one of the few cookbooks that I'd like to attempt every recipe (but I do have a few to begin with - Russian Nachos, Babka, Tadhig, Rugelach, and basically all of the desserts). #JewishACookbook #NetGalley

Beautiful book with very nice recipes. I'm not jewish but I like trying different foods so I requested this book. There are lots of recipes in this book that I would make, specially the pastries and desserts. Every single recipe has a photo and they are all mouthwatering! The book is clean, clear and well organized. The recipes are easy to read and to follow! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is a beautiful book. It informs, inspires, entices, and makes the reader’s mouth water. Yum, yum, yum

Firstly, I thought that the narrative was beautifully written. There were a great many recipes that I will definitely make. However, whilst this book doesn't profess to be kosher I would've appreciated it if a substitute was added for a meat dish. I would've been so easy for example to put a margarine substitute alongside butter. Or, a substitute for buttermilk.

Am therefore unable to read the book to give a review of the books content.

The blurb of the book did make it sound very interesting.

This is a beautiful cookbook and would make a lovely gift for the right people. The descriptions and writing are very funny and complete. The ingredients and methods are clearly aimed at families with no small children (i.e. no time) and with money to spend; this is not an everyday cookbook by any means. If you don't have the time or money to cook, you're best off gifting this book to someone who does and then wishing fervently that they bake you up a babka with pumpkin spice filling. The recipes are enticing but the preparation time and ingredients needed are not for the timid.

**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**

I've had an obsession with potato latkes and matzo ball soup for years (always my go-to recipes when I'm feeling sick), so I was excited to get the opportunity to read and review this cookbook.

The food looks amazing, and I can't wait to try my hand at most of these recipes. There are some great photos that make the food look delicious!

Overall, I definitely see this book being added to my collection and several of the recipes being added into my culinary rotation.

As a newly wed to a Jewish man, this book is exactly what I need to dive head first into the world of Jewish cooking. First and foremost, the pictures in this book are absolutely stunning with a corresponding picture to every recipe, which I really appreciate. I love how this book is divided not only by food category (apps, sides, dessert, etc.) but also into holidays. Food is arguably the most important part of each Jewish holiday with many requiring specific dishes in order to celebrate. This will be such a perfect reference during each holiday as a reminder of which foods are needed (and when it is finally time for a sufganiyot!).

Jake does an incredible job of showcasing his personality throughout this book and never misses an opportunity to through in a pun (or two) when he can. I cannot wait to tackle my first recipe from this book and am positive that the tips, tricks, and easy-to-follow instructions will give me all the confidence I need to be successful!

I really enjoyed this book! The recipes look amazing, the design was so much fun, and I loved the author's voice. I am delighted that it included not just Ashkenazi specific recipes but Persian ones as well. Great cookbook!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this review copy, I really like this one!

I really enjoyed this cookbook! I have old recipes from my family, but I liked seeing what updates here and there Jake made to these traditional recipes. I can't wait to buy it and see it in person!

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

In my recent quest to learn how to make more than 2-3 dishes, I’ve been reading a lot of cookbooks. This one has become my instant favorite. There are recipes for every level of cook accompanied by gorgeous photos.

What I like most, however, is the instant feel of love and belonging I used to have when my family gathered. It was always a mix of Jews, Christians, agnostics, orthodox, non-practicing, etc. Cancer ravaged us in a few short years, and I’ve been missing that sense of comfort and community as the rest of us have drifted apart. This book gave me hope to have that again, even if it’s in a slightly different form. Highly recommended!

This is a really nice modern take on traditional Jewish food. The recipes are not overly complicated and the cookbook is beautiful.

Mazal tov! Congratulations on the best Jew-ish cookbook ever written. The pictures are incredible. The forward catches your attention and then it becomes a page-turner. The recipes are easy to follow (I made a few) and the descriptions are rich with history. This is not a stuffy book with impossible ideas. If you don't have all the ingredients, the books explains where you will find them. This book will revolutionize your Friday nights even if you aren't Jewish. A book filled with love and joy. A wonderful gift for your favorite cook - beginner or advanced. Cheers - L'chaim!

Sumptuous updated recipes and gorgeous photographs...what’s not to like? I’ve been cooking Jewish recipes for sixty+ decades and while I can easily recognize the core of Cohen’s reimagined recipes my mouth waters over what he’s done to make them fresh and modern. I especially appreciate the photographs, both the ones that let readers eat with their eyes and the ones that illustrate such techniques as assembling rugelach and making babka. I plan to make many of this book’s recipes, starting tonight: roasted tomato brisket will fill the bill. And then there are those black and white cookies, savory kugel, and.... I’ll be busy for a while. Highly recommended.

Oy! If you're looking into Jewish cuisine for the first time, for a refresher, or updated recipes this cookbook will be hit the spot. Cohen's writing reads as if you are having a confab in the kitchen with a good friend - who's a great cook. He covers a range of traditional Jewish dishes, with a twist; whether it's updated tastes, switching from sweet to savory, or adding Mizrahi (Iraqi/Persian Jewish) spices to more well-known Ashkenazi (Eastern European origin Jewish) recipes. The luscious full-color photographs of each dish will make your mouth water. From apps to za'atar, this cookbook has it all. Mazel tov!
