This was a huge amount of fun. Magic, friendships AND a dragon. Important messages about libraries too. Filled with fabulous illustrations from Davide Ortu. A joy to read.

A fun adventure the likes of Inkspell and Bookwanderers but geared a little younger. I loved the world and whimsy of this book, and the love of books within the book made it feel like a reader's dream.

Kit and her friends Alita and Josh go to the library on their first day of summer vacation. It is not Kit's first choice, but when she and the librarian discover Kit is a wizard, Kit is excited. Kit has felt as a middle child in a big family that she was just average, but now she is learning spells! She and her friends meet the dragon who lives under the library but then businessman Hadrian Salt buys the land the library sits on despite public protest. It is up to Kit, her friends and the librarian to protect the dragon. The characters are engaging and there is humor too. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy for an honest review.

Friends Kit, Alita, and Josh ponder where to go on their first day of summer vacation -- a cemetery or a library -- Kit thinks the library is the more boring of the two. She’s not a reader, but Alita and Josh are, and they eventually decide to go to the library.

Which works out well for Kit, who discovers she’s actually a wizard, and that libraries are part of the magic that allows wizards to step into the magical world of books. She the youngest wizard ever known, and normally training doesn’t start until she’s 18, but the Head Librarian, Faith, is given permission by the Wizard Council to start her training at the library.

Alita and Josh aren’t wizards, and aren’t supposed to know about them, but of course they stumble into things and learn it on their own. The four become a sort of team, just in time to try to stop the evil businessman, Mr. Salt, from buying the library and building a shopping mall in its place.

Light chapter book with nice illustrations, but I will say Kit was a bit annoying at first, which is essentially the point that her impetuous nature (now with added magic!) will lead to trouble for her and those around her. Her siblings don’t get a name, just Wicked Older Brother, Perfect Older Sister, Toddler, and Baby. They weren’t major part in this story, but it appears to be the first of a series, and those references could get tiresome.

Looks like it could be a good start of a series for fans who might not be up to reading the Harry Potter series (or who already have), and there’s an ongoing joke about waiting for a new book in a similarly styled series. Not as much appeal for older readers as Harry Potter, but a nice entry-level fantasy story featuring wizards, libraries, and a dragon.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a quick read, but it was a good one. I liked the characters (Kit was a bit whiney at times) and love the setting of the library! I hope it becomes a series and we find out more about Kit and her newly discovered talents.

This early chapter book is so much fun to read with younger graders in elementary school.
Magic, friendships and a dragon.
It's also talks about library.
The illustrations are wonderful too.

You know all those stories about heroes that read a lot of books, and so know a lot of things. You know those stories about heroes that are just bursting to be heroes? You know those books about heroes that can't wait to train hard to get where they are going?

Kit is none of those things. Oh, she loves the idea that she is a wizard but hates that she has to do dull things like shelve library books, and read storytime books, to kids. That is not what makes a wizard a wizard.

And books, she hates to read them. Blech

This is a delightful story, none the less. Her two friends are very into a Harry Potter like series, and know all about spells and evil people and want to help her out if they can.

Silly, irrelevant, and just plain fun.

In this story, wizards work as librarians, because, well, you've got to earn a living. And so, the training takes place at the library.

Very light, and fun. Kids should love this story of Kit, and her friends, and Dogon, the dragon dog.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
