Hide in Place by Emilya Naymark is a book about an ex detective, Laney Bird who moves with her 13 yr old son, Alfie who is socially awkward to a new city in New York after a case she was working on was terminated due to her identity being known. It has been about three yrs since that incident and the two of them are settling in pretty well when the unthinkable happened. Alfie is missing. The police think he has just run away. Laney disagrees with that. She knows her son would never do anything like run away from home. Could someone have kidnapped Alfie? Laney discovers that her son and another boy were visiting an older man. One that has also disappeared. But he left behind a secret. A secret that includes a dead body. Could this have something to do with the case Laney had been working on with the mob when her cover was blown? The author does a great job of making you feel that you are a part of the story as I encountered every emotion possible. I could not put the book down and found myself reading way into the early am hours. While Laneys character sometimes seemed to lack emotion she did have a very strong will and did whatever she had to do to find her son. I loved this book!

Thank you netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

NYPD undercover cop Laney Bird finds herself with a blown cover, a 13 year old son and a new life starting in a small town in New York. Having to leave her job was difficult but she was making a life, although not the life she wanted.
Then one day her son disappears and she is at a loss as to where he went. Local law enforcement dismissed him as a run away but she knew deep down that it was more. And more it was.
I really enjoyed this novel and felt that the author developed good characters with depth and personality. Alfie, Laney's son, has a few issues but then what kid that age doesn't? As the book continues Laney's desperation to find her son escalates and her detective skills kick in.
Definitely a page turner and a book that held my interest I would recommend this to any reader who loves a good crime fiction and kudos to author Emilya Naymark for authoring a fine book. Laney used to be an undercover cop in NYC until she had to quit when she became a single mom to her borderline autistic son after her husband walked out on them. She and Alfie move to upstate NY for a quiet life in a small town while she drives a school bus and her son attends high school. Until the day her son goes missing and it appears her cover was blown and her last has caught up to her. What follows is a fast paced thriller that follows Laney in pursuit of her son and the man she believes who kind app we him and also follows Alfie while he fights to survive and try to escape his captor. There are some great minor characters here from Laneys neighbor turned friend Agnes to the teachers and suburban cops who are all working to bring Alfie home. The ending was satisfying although I did have a slight idea as to where it was headed. Overall a good thriller that I recommend if you enjoy this genre.

Laney was an undercover detective with the NYPD, but moves to a small town after her husband leaves her because their son is difficult and he also leaves her with a mountain of debt. . One day, her son vanishes and Laney is not taken seriously by police because her son has disappeared before. Laney must take the matter into her own hands, and drawing on her former life, she starts investigating where her son might be. This is a novel full of suspense and has twists at every corner - and it's believable. Laney is a strong female character and refuses to give up. For fans of thrillers, this is a great read.

All the characters seemed very real to me but the son was perhaps the most appealing. His relationship with his mother and how they related made this book as much about the characters as it was about the actual plot. It is very well written with sharp dialogue and clear descriptions of the settings. The mystery itself is well thought through and convincingly presented. This book will keep you riveted to the page from page one to the very end.

The book focuses on a single mother who used to be an undercover police officer. When her son Alfie goes missing, she does everything in her power to get him back no matter the consequences. I think that Laney is a character that I loved and hated at times. I didn’t enjoy some of the tactics she used while looking for her son, for example lying about still being a police officer and the way she treated people. But at the same time I think that any parent would act the same way if they were in the same situation.

My favourite character is Agnes because she always has Laney’s back, is smart and funny.
I like the interesting dynamic of Laney and Agnes’s friendship especially since they wouldn’t have been friends when they were younger. This is because at a young age, Laney thought that females like Agnes (girly girls who loved pink, makeup and manicures) were ‘silly’ and ‘even pointless’,

I would have liked more drama surrounding Alfie’s disappearance and those involved because I found that part a little boring. But I found the rest of the book to be an interesting read which kept me entertained with the twists and turns.

I received an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion

A very interesting story that involves a single mother of a boy who is a little socially awkward, and trying to fit in and make a friend or two. The mother happens to be an ex detective from NYC, and now the story picks up in a small town in the Hudson Valley right outside the city. After a bad decision on the boys part, you’ll be drawn into the dilemma when the boy trusts someone he thinks he knows, and a friendship his mother knows nothing about. A fast paced story that kept my interest from the first chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone so loves a tension filled fast paced story. A great debut from Emilya Naymark. Thank You to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an advanced digital copy of this great book.

Laney is an undercover detective with the NYPD, but she has to flee and start a new life after having her cover blown. She has a son that can be difficult at times, and she’s raising him on her own. One day, her son vanished without a trace, and Laney discovers some disturbing news. Her son may have been taken by a former confidential informant, and both her and her son may be in grave danger. This is a novel full of suspense and has twists at every corner. Laney is a strong female character, which I appreciate greatly. She is full of life and refuses to give up or back down to anyone and is willing to go to the ends of the earth to save her son. For fans of thrillers, this is a must read.

The characters were well written, flawed but relatable. I liked Agnes' character and her relationship with Laney, though it did seem unlikely that they would be friends (and the author noted this as well).

After an undercover case against the Russian mob goes south, NYPD detective Laney Bird packs up her son and gets the hell out of Dodge. Three years later and Laney thinks she just might be safe when her son disappears. Local cops think the 13 year old has just taken off, a typical teenage reaction to some imagined slight at home, but Laney knows her son would never just take off. As Laney searches for her son in an approaching blizzard, she discovers her son and his friend have been meeting one of her old CIs. And now he’s dead. It looks like Laney’s undercover past has caught up with her after all. Will her skills as a detective be good enough to find her son in time? Naymark creates a very realistic, damaged heroine in this fast paced thriller
