I didn’t expect to enjoy reading a superhero story, but the reviews were already so good, that I gave it a try. And really it was a story about friendship and the friends just happened to be superheroes. I really loved it!

I liked this story and found it to be fairly unique in terms of superhero tales. I think it would be a good movie, and would appeal to graphic novel enthusiasts as well.

Pretty good stuff. This is essentially a scifi/fantasy mystery with well written characters and solid story telling . This might be best for 20-30somethings but anyone can certainly enjoy it.

With every book, Mike Chen solidifies himself as one of my favorite sci-fi writers. This one is just as action packed, super fun, super emotional as his previous two. I loved being along for the ride with Jamie and Zoe as they tried to sort out their pasts, who they are and what they mean to each other. I thought it was going to be a little bit more of a slow burn, enemies to friends situation, they teamed up quicker than I expected. But as you journey into their memories and into their mission, it starts to take a few unexpected twists. Also- keep an eagle eye out for references, I loved the shout out to the Green Bone Saga!

Two misfits whose memories are erased turning into reluctant heroes: a mind robber and greatest fae combining their powers for greater good but their main motivation is discovering who they really are!

Well: I personally enjoyed the diversity and LGBT representation of the story with its relatable MCs Zoe and Jamie who team up to find their mysterious origins. They’re not born to be heroes but now they are forced to adapt in their changing lives but forming a proper future life depends on where they come from and what their real purpose is.

It’s a balanced paced, intriguing reading with promising world building and a little weak, flat villain characterization ( yes I visualized someone more powerful with his evil laughs and great schemes to destroy the universe)

Overall: it was more than okay, smart, riveting read! I enjoyed the previous works of the author a little more. But I respect his choice to try something new about heroes with super powers theme.

I’m rounding up my 3.5 stars to 4 entertaining, moving, action packed stars!

Great story with wonderful characterizations. While the superhero theme is timely, it is the use of memory that really gives this story the emotional impact. Who are we? What makes us? Is it nature or nurture? This novel explores whether we are innately heroes or if our environment prompts us to rise up. Great read and highly recommended.

When a story starts with a reluctant bank robbery by a person with "exceptional abilities" it's hard not to get drawn in. But it's not a crime novel and it's not completely a super hero novel either (although there are superhero moments). Instead, readers find themselves following two "exceptionals" trying to figure out why they have become exceptional, and who or what they were before. This story is full of humor, action, mystery and well-drawn characters who make a pretty "exceptional" pair.

A really fun take on who superheroes and supervillains would be if they were everyday people... who had been experimented on by mad scientists. It definitely isn’t all capes and tights in San Delgado as Zoe and Jamie try to make the best of their mysterious powers and make it to the Caribbean for books, coffee, and pet cats alive.
Alas, the best laid plans inevitably give way to winging it which inevitably gives way to a hilarious, entertaining, well-crafted, desperately heroic shitshow.
So, is it true that anyone can wear the mask?

I've read a few of the author's previous books before and enjoyed them so I was excited when my request was approved.

We Could Be Heroes is not about heroes, actually; it's about the regular people making certain choices that lead them down a path and it is up to them to decide which fork in the road to choose.

Jamie and Zoe are unlikely heroes; in fact, they weren't born heroes.

When we first meet them, Jaime is the Mind Robber, and Zoe is his greatest foe. But enemies becomes allies when they both realize they have more in common than just extraordinary abilities and team up to find the truth of their mysterious origins.

I liked Zoe and Jamie; they're relatable, decent people, Jamie especially is just trying to get through life with a minimum of fuss and drama.

I really understood Zoe's desire to learn the truth about herself; her fractured memories and past she's unable to resolve and the personal conflicts she knows is simmering beneath the surface.

I also liked that Zoe is a woman of color; I imagined her being played by Chloe Bennett in the movie.

I love comics, superheroes and superheroes movies so the premise of We Could Be Heroes really appealed me.

The writing is solid but I wished there was more exposition on Jamie and Zoe's previous life; I understand the point is that their memories have been wiped which adds a mysterious element throughout the story but I felt I didn't know them as individuals, other than the villain/hero roles they played.

Also, I wished the villain had been more villainous but that's just me.

Good guys are just as memorable as their archenemies and I grew up equating the most famous superheroes with their equally famous evil counterparts; Wonder Woman vs. Cheetah, X-Men vs. Magneto, Batman vs. Joker, Superman vs. Lex Luthor.

We Could Be Heroes is about humanity, kindness and selflessness, doing what is right not because we have to but because we want to.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a book with a positive message and a good ending.

An incredibly fun story with delightfully flawed superheroes, exciting action, and satisfying character growth—not to mention moments that’ll make you laugh out loud. I have all my fingers crossed I’ll get to see this on screen someday!
