Thank you to NetGalley and 47North for giving me the chance to read and review Wings of Fury by Emily R. King. I felt the power of this story from the first few chapters! It was a 5 star read for me all the way! The characters were perfectly developed, and I can't wait to read more about them in Crown of Cinders. Althea was the strong female character every woman wants to read, she loved her sisters fiercely and fought bravely against any and all oppressors. I loved this look at young Zeus! I loved how the fantasy world mirrored a lot of our real world when it comes to the power dynamics women play in society. I think any lover of fantasy and mythology would enjoy this story. This story would be great for any age reader, teen, young adult and beyond.

I love this book. There are lots of adventures, twists, and well-drawn characters. An unexpected story, fast-paced, and hard to put it down. I'm looking forward to the second book.

I really enjoy the way Emily R. King writes, she's able to take the historical novel and make it a great scifi read. I enjoyed reading this book and had a lot of fun reading this.

#WingsofFury #NetGalley.

Such a great origin story of Greek gods and goddesses.. I'd say more but I don't want to include any spoilers - that was part of the fun for me. Cronos, the Almighty rules and has been fated to be deposed by his child, the Boy God. Althea, having lost her mother to Cronos, promises to protect her sisters -- a promise that leads her on a journey to find the Boy God. Althea's own odyssey uncovers family truths, fierceness of love, finding love of self and of others. I really enjoyed this telling of mythology and eagerly await to read more.

did I read a YA book? yes.. did I actually like it.. yes!
I love greek mythology so any retelling is actually fun. It of course allowed for some creative choices that were not pure greek mythology. It was fun, unique and intriguing. I was spellbound and I could not put this book down as much as I was dying for sleep. It was delicious and I ate it up!

From the very beginning of the story, I was invested. The synopsis had already appealed to me, and the beginning of the story reeled me in with action. Wings of Fury was a, seemingly, great main character - strong in her resolve and even stronger with independence. But as the book progressed, things started to drag. I realized around 60% that I was just forcing myself to finish, I've come to the conclusion. There's a lot of build-up to the action scenes but weird decision making and a shallow world overall toned it down for me quite a bit.

I am here for the trend of literary re-tellings of Greek mythology, this book included! In the beginning, I was worried this was going to go down the path of superficially feminist YA fantasy, and honestly the female protagonist did get on my nerves a bit throughout the book (I hate when a woman’s being headstrong = her #1 personality trait). But I was pleased with the turn this took towards the end, and with the way it ultimately veered away from a cliché storyline in a very satisfying way. I’d be interested in continuing this series, for sure!

Due to a problem with send to kindle I was unable to read the title. I realized this problem only now, but it seems there was no sychronization for the past two months.

I have quite some mixed feelings about this book and writing a review wasn’t exactly easy. First of all, I really liked the premise of the book and overall I feel like Wings of Fury has a lot of potential to become a good fantasy book; it has quite interesting characters, a good plot and an interesting take on Greek mythology. However, I feel like the book needs some more work to reach its potential, especially regarding the world building. For me, the world building is such an important part of a fantasy book and Wings of Fury lacked a bit in that area which was the main reason to why I unfortunately ended up DNF-ing the book about halfway in. I’m not one who DNF books easily since I always want to give the story a chance to improve but in this case, the writing seemed much the same throughout the entire book. The writing felt a bit rushed and the storyline not entirely clear.
However, as I mentioned earlier, I really liked the overall idea of this book. I just which the story had been given a bit more substance and detail since that is the kind of books I prefer :)

An quick and fun Greek mythology retelling

Cronus, the God of Gods rules over Althea's world. Because of his tyranny, women are fated to serve men. But Althea has only one goal: protect her two sisters at all costs. When a prophecy leads her to the island of Crete to find Cronus' lost son, she will do everything in her power to convince him to overthrow his father and break the kingdom free.

I love a good mythology retelling and I wasn't disappointed by this one. Althea is a very strong-minded and brave main character and even if I don't always understand the choices she makes, I liked following her story. However, I was a little confused about some of her thoughts and decisions. This book has kind of a slow beginning but the rest is fast-paced, you just have to get through the first few chapters. It was short and read it in little more than 24 hours. I found the writing pleasant but not enthralling or particularly beautiful, and to be honest, there were some scenes where I didn't totally understand what was going on. It didn't prevent me from liking the story and following the plot, but it was a little unsettling at times. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the plot-twists and ending and I'm definitely enthralled to read the next one and see what will become of the three sisters.

I recommend for fans of quick fantasy and mythology retellings.

"You are Althea Lambros. You don't have to do anything a man tells you to do."

Wow! This is an incredible story, with Greek myths, Titans and the journey of three sisters against tyranny.

This was a very unique retelling, reimagining of the story of the Greek gods. I enjoyed the authors inventiveness and strong female protagonist. My knowledge of the Greek mythologies sometimes battled with the way this story unfolded. Yet, I’m super curious if there will be a sequel and what direction the author will take with it. If you enjoy coming of age stories with a strong female, you should definitely spend some time with this one!

Initial Thoughts
I actually grabbed a copy of this book from Amazon's first reads program but was subsequently provided with a NetGalley widget courtesy of the publisher. Anyway, the fact that it was my first reads choice should show how excited I was to read this book. I've read all of Emily R. King's books so far.

Some Things I Liked
Mythology in a new light. I loved that this had so many familiar themes and names from the "mythology we learned in school" but they were utilized in such a unique and modern way.
Modern lens. I also loved the way modern thinking and progressive ideas were woven into the story. Althea was a strong MC who never stopped fighting for herself or her sisters and I loved her for that. Greek Mythology is often filled with themes of patriarchy and I really enjoyed seeing those themes put aside for this story.
Plot twists. I also applaud Emily's ability to keep me on the edge of my seat with those twists.
Zeus as a brother and not a love interest. We all know that Zeus and Hera were married and ruled Mount Olympus but I was so glad to see that Zeus was entirely relegated to "little brother" in this story as opposed to a viable love interest for Althea.

Series Value
I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I also feel like I can easily see myself rereading this book before reading book 2 (not out of necessity, but rather because I enjoyed the story that much.)

Final Thoughts
I really loved this book. I think it's my favorite Emily R. King book to date.

The first book of Wings of Fury by Emily R. King is a different, surprising, and strange version of a romantic mythology story of Cronus's reign.

A retelling mythology story of the time that Gods have less power and women are warriors and fight for their freedom. What should I call the Lambros sisters? Revolutionary maybe?!

"As long as men still think we're their possessions to buy and sell and trade, we will never be safe."

Cleora, Bronte, and Althea are three daughters of Stavra and Tassos. After their parents died, try to escape and made a better new life for themself, on the island of Crete, where the God Boy was hidden.
Althea's destiny is to guide and protect her older sisters. The oracles direct Althea to her fate for finding Zeus and defeat the God of God's, Cronus (who has swallowed his children), which is responsible for Stavra's death.

I love this book. There are lots of adventures, twists, and well-drawn characters. An unexpected story, fast-paced, and hard to put it down. I'm looking forward to the second book.

Many thanks to 47North and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read Wings of Fury by Emily R. King in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this book, this was a jumble of Adult fiction mythology and New Adult fantasy with some scattered mythology and a bit of romance.

All in all it wasn't awful, but it wasn't the best mythology book I have read. I will not be going forward with the next book(s).

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

I first discovered Emily R. King through her The Hundredth Queen series. When I saw she was exploring a new mythos, I had to read.

This is a very strong start to a series. The world building is thorough and enjoyable. Althea is such a strong, no nonsense character. I think a great summary of what you will find in this book is this quote:

"My mother told me that men would speak about the Golden Age as a time of peace and happiness for all. Passed-down stories would boast of an era of general ease when the lives of men were blissful, full of abundance, and blessed with spontaneous growth, each man unconstrained in heart and soul. However, the women of our age would tell a very different story."
