It wasnt a favorite of mine but the story and artwork was pretty good, dark, and gothic. It gave me crypt keeper vibes.

I liked this retelling of Phantom and thought the artwork was interesting. The Phantom's got a bit of a Tales from the Crypt vibe goin', which my inner 90's teen appreciated.

This is a graphic novel adaptation of the original The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. In a little over 100 pages, Tomi depicts the dark, gothic imagery of the story with their uncanny illustrations.

I loved this darker version that seemed less romantic that the play/movie I adore so much. I think this was done well for such a short new take on the old classic! The art style drew me in so much!

I think this is one of those times when I add a classic into the “Did not like” list. I have to say that the only reference I had of this was the movie in which Gerard Butler starts so I kind of knew beforehand it was going to be filled with drama.

That being said, this adaptation wasn’t bad but it didn’t particularly move me either. I think that the purpose of the Phantom of the Opera is that you empathize with that poor Erik, who had the talent to become a magnificent artist, but whose face was so marred, he hated himself. And well, truth is, I couldn’t even feel pity for him.

You have to know that I tend to like “kind monsters” characters because they never asked to be one (for example, Frankenstein is my favorite classic because of its Creature). But, I felt like in this case, we only saw his bad side. He manipulates Christine –the woman he’s in love with- in several ways and I just can’t stand that.

The art style isn’t my favorite either but I’m sure a lot of people would find it perfect for the gothic ambiance of the novel. Last but not least, if you’re looking for a fast read, I’m sure you can read it in one sitting.

This was a great retelling of the classic story. I can't remember if I've read the source material (which probably means I haven't), but as someone who grew up with the ALW musical, this just added more appreciation for the story as a whole. The characters were well developed, and it appears to be a pretty faithful retelling of Gaston Leroux' story. It did seem like there were some moments that were rushed, that I do wish had been drawn out, but it didn't necessarily take away from enjoying the read.

The Phantom of the Opera is a classic that I love to see on film every year around October just for the spooky and gothic nature of the story. However, while the original story and the adaptive film possess the aesthetic of the characters and story, this graphic novel felt all over the place. Unfortunately I couldn't keep up with the events that were unfolding and I believe that's because there were important scenes that were missing. It felt as if the characters just jumped from one terror to the next without a proper transition to help the story flow smoothly.

The only part that made any sense was the ending when the truth about who the phantom really is was revealed. The rest of the novel, though gothic and rigid in artwork, falls short. I can see where the author and the artist was going with it but the execution didn't come through well.

Thanks Netgalley for this arc in return for an honest review.

Although I wasn't a lover of the original novel when I read it, almost a year ago, I understand well why it's a classic and why it made an impact at the time. When I read the synopsis of this book I thought it would be a retelling, but in reality it is a religiously faithful adaptation to the original material and with an art that enchants you from the first page.

I havn't read The Phantom of the Opera so I can't tell how good this adaptation is. What I can say is - it's really confusing. And not in a good way. The dialogue is taken straight from the book, but there's a lot of description and events missing.
The art is ok, nothing exceptional.
It seems like this is mostly geared towards the fans of the book or the musical, but then again - they could be disappointed that a lot of the story is missing.

I got this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
I've had The Phantom of the Opera on my shelves for aaaages, but have been way too intimidated by it to actually read it! This graphic novel was therefore perfect for me, since it allowed me to experience the overall story without the heavy, english writing that the actual book is in! I also think the aesthetic of the illustrations really capture the feel of the book perfectly! I kinda wished this was longer tbh, but overall a good job!

I have mixed thoughts about this book. On one hand, the graphic of this novel were exquisite, all the colors totally fitted the atmosphere so well. At times I felt like I was riding a ferris weel, admiring all the beauty of my surroundings. However, I feel like it did some really bad changes to the story. The phantom was portrayed like a total monster Christine was struggling so hard to escape him at all times. He had no reedeming qualities, no charm, he was very one dimensional. Raoul was portrayed like the ultimate hero and prince charming, always ready to save Christine from the claws of the Phantom. I think by changing the narrative to make it a more black and white novel instead of a morally gray one, something was lost, and I could not enjoy it as much as I would have liked to.

“Poor Erik!”

This adaptation by Varga Tomi is Phan-tastic! The amazing colors and elaborate details in every scene build a vibrant world for this tragic story to play out. It is a perfect companion read with Gaston Leroux’s classic tale of obsession and insanity. Some edits were made to condense the story into a graphic novel format so some familiarity with the plot is a must.

Aside from the fact that the quality of the e-arc that I received, this was a difficult read. The art style was very over the top and kind of tacky and the story seemed to be on the over dramatic side. I am somewhat familiar with the musical and some of the original novel element but I just did not enjoy the story. I didn’t even finish the book that’s how insufferable I found it.

Setting The Phantom of the Opera as a graphic novel, Varga Tomi gives readers an easier understanding of the original Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. In doing this, I believe more people will be able to enjoy this story.
I enjoyed this book and it has given me the urge to try the original again. The Phantom of the Opera: The Graphic Novel is best suited for teens and adults.
Thank you Varga Tomi and Diamond Book Distributors for allowing me to read and review this book before publication. I read this book through NetGalley for my free in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was such an unique view on this classic! Although I've never read the novel, I'm a huge fan of the musical and whole concept of Phantom, and Tomi's dark, intricate and beautiful artwork made this graphic novel shine. In terms of plot, I don't think the graphic novel would be a starting point for those who doesn't know anything about what happens, since some scenes of the original piece were cut off or implied for the reader, which may be a let down for some people, and made the plot flew much faster, but not specifically in a good way. If you're familiar with Phantom and enjoy this amazing story, this is a must-read.

Received an EARC from NetGalley. All opinions are mine and mine alone. I love The Phantom of the Opera. The novel, the musical, anything I can get my hands on. So when I saw this on NetGalley, I was very excited.. This is the first graphic novel of a classic novel I have read so I wasn't sure what to expect. The main story and important plots were there. However, there are some moments in the novel where I couldn't read some of the text. The page had black box moments with text only. Not sure if it was because it was digital or not, but it was difficult to make out some moments of the book.
The art is gorgeous and plays with the dark, gothic romance that is well known with this story. It was a fast paced book, but the art played well with the text. If you enjoy the Phantom, the classics, and/or graphic novels, you'll like this one!

A graphic novel depicting the classic Phantom of the Opera.
I am a huge Phantom fan and I wanted to love this one.

All of the plot points are present but it feels choppy and lacks the elegance of the original novel. I think it would be hard for someone that doesn't know the story well to follow along and understand what is happening.

However, the illustrations are lovely and unique.

3 1/2 Stars.

The story was interesting and the illustrations are beautiful. I faced hard time getting through first few pages, that's the reason I have deducted the half star.

Overall, if you are looking for an emotional roller coaster short Graphic novel with a Happy ending , this will be it.

This is a review of the graphic novel adaptation, not the classic itself. This is my first venture into this classic, and I'm more intrigued now to read it fully. But the adaptation wasn't good enough for me.
I got an ARC copy from Netgalley and that wasn't of good quality, the text wasn't clear and the colors weren't great, and the art style itself wasn't what I preferred, also it was so hasty and unless you've actually read the full novel, you were left wondering or at least half-guessing a lot of the plot points.

It's a Gothic romance of an opera singer and the "ghost" who falls in love with her, and the complications of his and her characters. Sadly, these complications were surface level in the graphic novel, but I'm more intrigued now to read it.
