I thought this was a wonderful book that illustrates what winter is like in the woods. A family explains what is tucked away beneath the snow covered ground, trees and frozen lakes. My six year old daughter enjoyed the colorful illustrations and loved learning about all the animals that are alive in the winter woods, even if you can't see them. An enjoyable book to read, perfect in the winter time.

Thank you Netgalley and Sasquatch Books/Little Bigfoot for the opportunity to read this book.

an informative and poetic picture book with inviting illustrations, a perfect winter/family day read, I liked seeing all the family's different winter activities and spotting what all the different animals were doing on each page.

I loved the illustrations in this book and how it shows the juxtaposition between the winter experience of humans and the animals that share their habitat. I think children will enjoy learning about how animals experience winter and the beautiful illustrations will keep them entertained.

I enjoyed this winter animal book, especially with the split illustrations of all of the people and critters. This is a fun winter book to talk about what different animals do when it gets cold out, and also how that relates to what people are doing outside in the winter.

The illustrations are beautiful! Love the storyline & how it easy it is follow follow! My three year old has been asking a lot of questions about where the animals and bugs have gone now that it’s cold, so this will be a great book for us to enjoy and learn from! Thanks!

When Winter Comes is a poetic picture book about how the woods are alive with animals in the winter, even if you cannot see them. I especially liked that this book shared winter activities alongside the animals, such as “We know the towering trees we ski among shield hardy birds from bitter winds.” Kids will enjoy learning about the animals found in the forest in winter, and they may even find a new activity to do with their family. This book could be a great supplement along with a winter nature hike.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Bigfoot for an ARC of this book.

Curious kids will want to know all about how wildlife exists during the cold, winter days. The illustrations are very colorful and sure to catch a child’s attention. My hope is that they will be large enough so readers can see all the small images too. Parents will enjoy reading this short book and hopefully it will be a jumping off point for as much information as the child can handle for their age.

I received a free copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

When Winter Comes by Aimée M. Bissonette is a beautifully illustrated children's picture book with a poetic story about the woods in winter. When the family goes out for a walk and winter fun, the children don't know where all the animals from the summer have gone. What they learn and us along with them is what happens in the winter in the woods. We learn about nocturnal animals, hibernation, nature, activities to do in winter and food sources. I loved the illustrations. They showed a cross section under the snow of the field mice in tunnels as they walked over them, and the fish swimming under the frozen lake where they were ice fishing, among others. Each two-page spread shows how birds, bugs, fish, etc. are still around even though we can't see them. My big complaint about this book is when they show other animals sleeping in the children's beds? A nice winter bedtime story as the children go to sleep at the end.

This delightful book is a celebration of winter surprises. To many humans, when the winter land is surveyed, conclude that the world is covered in cold, white, uninviting snow and frozen lakes and definitely not for them to pursue. These images foster a desire to stay tucked inside their cozy homes and curled up beside their warm blazing fireplaces. This book is designed for those families who love to experience the great outdoors. They bravely ( and happily ) take on the challenges of the cold weather and see beyond the blankets of snow and ice. They simply love to dance with winter!

They bundle up and head outdoors to explore and partake in winter adventures. Parents want their little ones to know that this season is not a dormant period in which you retreat, but one for indulging in so many fun winter activities. They also discover that many forms of wildlife are embracing the winter in the snowy woods.

"When winter comes,
and deep snow blankets the woods,
and ice forms cold and smooth on the lakes,
thick enough for us to skate on,
some people think our woods are empty.
But we know better."

"The fallen log that is used to hide behind in a snowball fight is a shelter for tree frogs, caterpillars, ladybugs, and slugs. The drifts of fallen snow that families snowshoe across have winding tunnels made by meadow mice in search of seeds and bark. The towering trees families ski among shield birds from winter winds. "

The poetic text is lovely to read aloud and teaches kids to observe nature around them. It highlights the importance of quality time spent together as a family. The illustrations greatly enrich the text and are very realistic. The message proclaims the joys of engaging in the season that we call winter. I highly recommend this book.

A beautiful illustrated book about the loveliness of winter. The crunchy snow in a white winterland. There is something peaceful and a longing when you read this and kids will love it too. It will make anyone long for the beauty of winter.

In the children's book When Winter comes it tells of how the winter comes in and protects us. It provides safe homes for our wildlife and insects. Yet winter provides fun for children and adults to ice skate, go sledding, build snowmen and other winter activities.

This was a cute and quick illustrated book that would be perfect to teach young children about the changing seasons. Though short, it was beautifully written and illustrated.

***I'd recommend this book to parents wanting a fun way to explain to their children where critters go when winter comes. I personally loved reading this to my 1-year old daughter.***

This cute children’s book goes through talking about all the critters who are hiding in logs, under the ground in tunnels, and staying warm inside the trees.

I had fun reading this poetic child’s book out loud to my daughter, and from what I could tell she really enjoyed the fun illustrations showing kids and animals in the snow. I found this book to be very insightful when it comes to explaining where all the animals go when it gets cold outside. Like how the bugs go in logs, along with all other warm places little critters go.

***I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.***

This is such a sweet tale of what happens to all of our wonderful critters when winter arrives. Equal parts informative and festive, this is a great read for littles. My 4 year old loved this!

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. This book shows that while winter may seem quiet, there is a lot going on in the woods.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books/Little Bigfoot for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. This book has such interesting details. I double checked a couple of facts, just to make sure since this says children's fiction. Nice graphics, cute with really fun facts. Yes mosquitoes do hibernate!! 4 stars

A family happily engages in outdoor winter activities like skating, snowball fights, ice fishing, and skiing in this cheerful, seasonal picture book. As they do so, they are consciously aware of the animals around them. Some, like the tree frogs, are hibernating, while others, like the field mice, tunnel beneath the ground and come out occasionally for food. Meanwhile, the fish are still active beneath the ice and the birds seek shelter in the trees. The illustrations appear to be mixed media including some kind of pencil or ink for the fine lines and something like charcoal for the texture of the snow, sky, water, and dirt. After reading it once through, I went back and took a closer look at the art style, and I love the realistic color palette used for the snow. The overall effect is pure, clean, quiet white, but there’s actually quite a bit of blue and pink and gray for showing the drifts and shadows and sunlight. The bright blue sky and the green branches of the pine trees make for a very colorful look overall. I think kids will especially like the pictures in which you can see the animals hidden from the human characters below the surface of the ground or the ice. This book will make a great read-aloud, either as part of a storytime or at home. I think it would pair well with Kevin Henke’s When Winter Is Here from 2018.
