A sceptic scientist and a spiritual medium spend the night in a reputedly haunted house - Ashbury Manor. What happens? Read it to find out! Interesting and entertaining story with ghostly spirits. I look forward to reading more by this author. I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

This Volume is presented in a series of episodes (podcasts) in written form.
Gothic horror set in Victorian Era
Beatrix Greene is a self declared medium that helps those connect with their dearly departed. When she is hired by James Walker, under the guise of proving mediums actually exist, the entire party gets more than any of them bargained for. Except maybe James, because he does know the history, he’s lived through it.
Beatrix learns more of who she really is once she lets her true self shine.
While graphic in some context, if you enjoy horror and the underworlds, you will enjoy this !

A spooky and entertaining Gothic tale of (semi)terror, “The Haunting of Beatrix Greene” has some good scares and good characters. Still, the format seems unnecessary, and the way it’s released may be confusing to some people.

I really enjoyed this and it was a pretty quick read and of course based in my favorite historical time period the Victorian era. It was so creepy and it keep you on the edge of your seat as you are reading. It was really reminiscent of The Haunting of Bly Manor which I loved because it was creepy but it was all atmosphere and what you could see out of the corner of your eye. I am sad it took me so long to read this because it would have been perfect for spooky season.

Thanks to Serial Box and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.

I received this book in exchange for an honest opinion, which has not altered my opinion of this book.

As of lately I have really been getting more into horror and thriller books and haunted houses are right up there as far as some of my favorite books. This one is a perfect addition to any collection. We follow a woman who is pretending to be a medium and who does not believe in ghosts at all only to have completely unexplainable events happen in her effort to secure a good life for herself.

I absolutely loved this book! It was a quick read (being a novella) and I wish that there were more of these. I’m a bit confused as to if there is or isn’t. The problem I tend to run into with novellas is that they tend to be rushed and this one did not feel rushed at all, it was gripping and I read it in nearly one single sitting. It was amazing! There were twists I didn’t see coming and the characters were so strange and intriguing.

If you are interested in getting more into horror and/or thriller books, then I highly recommend this book! It’s quick and to the point and well done. Overall, 4.5 out of 5 from me, thank you to the publishers for a copy.

A spiritual medium, a relentless ghost and a passionate love affair.

Whilst the plot of this book was intriguing, the pacing was a little off and I found myself getting bored around halfway through.

A good book if you want a short suspenseful gothic thriller.

I didn't know before picking up this book that this was episode one of a serial-but this does read like a standalone even if the ending is a little open-ended.

Beatrix Greene earns her living as a spiritual medium - though she herself does not believe in ghosts or any supernatural. All she believes is an extra something emotional within her that manages to empathise when it comes to her clients.

James Walker is a sceptic who has disproven and unmasked many spiritual mediums for the frauds they are.

So, when he makes a monetary offer to Ms. Greene to spend one night at the haunted Ashbury Manor to (dis) prove the claims of haunting as groundless-she accepts; not knowing what this single night would bring for both Beatrix and James.

.A gothic horror, this actually was more than I had been expecting-eerie, creepy and horrifying. I actually enjoyed the story far more than I had expected to; along with the romance that develops between James and Beatrix.

I do not know if I will stick with this serial; but I would not say no to picking up the next episode if so desired.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me a copy of The Haunting of Beatrix Greene in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, this is not a novel, nor is it technically any form of writing meant for physical consumption. This is an e-book ARC made for the first episode of a serial podcast.

After finding out this information from a fellow reviewer, the different questions I had about the way the e-book was written seemed to be answered as, after listening to the podcast version as well, they seem to work better in podcast form.

The overall story however was wonderful and I loved it. Beatrix Green is offered 200 pounds to spend a night at the every so famously haunted Ashbury manor. The two main characters of the story were wonderfully written and believable. Beatrix works at a fake medium and finds out through the story that she has powers of her own. James Walker has made it his life work to show the world how fake all these mediums are. They obviously find their way together and banter.

I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere of this horror e-book/podcast and would greatly recommend picking up the podcast as a horror story to listen to on your own time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Haunting of Beatrix Greene

This gave me vibes of The Haunting of Bly Manor meets American Horror Story Roanoke, two TV shows that I absolutely LOVED and therefore I REALLY enjoyed The Haunting Of Beatrix Greene!

I would absolutely love to see more stories following Beatrix and James to America doing investigative work, I would definitely devour them all!

This is a short, quick read and would be perfect for around Halloween (I regret taking so long to get to it!).

I was in the mood for horror lately and was absolutely thrilled when I picked up this book! It's fast past and stays tense from start to finish - which I love anytime I read horror. Loved the haunted house atmosphere, the main character's personality and the spookiness of it all.

Didn't love the romance though. It was too fast, too much, too soon.

In a post-MTV world audiences don't tend to get scared by the written world. The real world is scary enough and many of today's horror movies focus on real life horror rather than the supernatural. You could argue that supernatural stories had their hey day during the 18th and 19th century. Personally, I feel that with The Haunting of Beatrix Greene authors Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons and Vicky Alvear Shecter have achieved the near impossible. They have created a tale that is actually rather chilling.

With nods to historical characters (Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and to trends towards the supernatural (seances) we are immersed in a world so vastly different from the 21st century but we are given a truly shocking tale about ghostly revenge, possession and death.

Collaborating, these authors have created something truly special.

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene by Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, and Vicky Alvear Shecter is available now.

I would like to thank Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read by Rachel Hawkins and I cannot say I enjoyed it. I found it very slow-paced and I couldn't connect easily with the characters. It was supposed to be this "Gothic" mystery/ horror book, and although I enjoyed the world-building, it felt a bit flat, I don't really know why, maybe it just wasn't for me.
I would like to read something else of this author though at some point in the future.

A spiritual medium, a disbelieving scientist, a haunted house and vengeful sprits make for a perfect read. This fulfills that need if you are looking.

Beatrix Greene has been invited to Ashbury Manor by James Walker. They are accompanied by her her friend and a photographer. Mr. Walker is not very upfront about his intentions but the money he is offering seals the deal. Is the house really haunted?

Scientist and sceptic James Walker, makes it his business to discredit mediums as the frauds that he believes they are, however, he has an offer for Beatrix - to spend the night in the reputedly haunted Ashbury Manor, to deliver undisputed evidence of a vengeful spirit, or to discover whether these claims are in fact groundless, and he’s willing to pay a handsome fee for her services.

You’re not going crazy, this isn’t really a book. This was initially released last fall by podcast subscription service Serial Box, who also made e-book ARCs of the first episode for Netgalley. Since then, however, Serial Box has rebranded as Realm Media (https://variety.com/2021/digital/news/serial-box-rebrand-realm-free-podcasts-1234943075/) and now will be offering some podcast titles, including this one, for free. New episodes are released on Mondays, and as of when I’m writing this they’re at episode 5.

I’ve seen this book listed as just being by Rachel Hawkins in some places, and by Hawkins, Ash Parsons and Vicky Alvear Shecter in others. I’m not sure which is the most accurate, but the first episode does have Hawkins’ signature spunk and gothic charm. If you’re a fan of Hawkins, Deanna Raybourn, or Jennifer Lynn Barnes, I would give this series a shot.

Is a 3.5 stars read. I expected more from this one. It's a really good book, but too short. I hope they continue with this story, or this will be forgettable

I have been sent an eARC of this book.
This is my first spooky book and oh my God it was awesome .
A haunted, gothic house where the murder of a mother and her child took pace wanted the next heir to follow his ancestors. He doesn't have this choice he has to be evil .
A lady who is a spiritualist and works as medium between life and death and doesn't use the fraudulent methods to engage her clients. She loves her work. How did she ended in this much trouble.
It was gripping and fast paced. The writing is mature and easily grabs the readers attention. Not once I want to put the story away.
The characters of Miss Beatrix and Mr. Walker are relatable. I love the fire between them.
The scene description is on point I an imagine the whole scene in my mind like a flashback.

If you are into spooky horror books this one is for you...

I would rate this book 3.25 out of 5 stars.

I was really excited to read this - a fun, gothic short story featuring a medium in a haunted house!

While I enjoyed this story, it did feel like a lot of other books or even movies I have seen before. Given the length, I found the story a little underdeveloped and the romance felt contrived.

3.5/5 stars

This was a interesting historical fiction with light romance, a mystery and a haunted manor. I enjoyed the interactions between the two main characters Beatrix, a fake medium who finds out she has powers, and James, a scientist with a past that debunks spiritualists for a living. It definitely had gothic romance feels without even though the romance was very light. The central of the story was the character's interesting pasts as well as the haunted manor. There were definite paranormal aspects to the story and at times horror bits that were specific and gruesome. So squeamish fans beware! Overall, I enjoyed this supernatural, paranormal ghost mystery with a bit of romance thrown in.

*Thank you so much to Serial Box and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

2 stars. This started out somewhat entertaining and then it became annoying and I quickly lost interest. Too cliché and uninspiring. Review to come.

Due to being a high school English teacher, I am often behind on writing reviews. Here is a summary of my initial thoughts.

Thoroughly enjoyable short read.
Turned out to be a much more gruesome Victorian horror novel than I anticipated in the beginning, and also I've found this to be quite well written.
I didn't even mind the "insta-love" as much as I usually do.. I think this was quite nice for what it was - a short read with some spooky elements.
