I haven't read the previous books in this series and although it was an interesting story I didn't feel as invested as I might. Involves time travel, magic and challenges for the characters.

FOUND IN FLAME AND MOONLIGHT is the fourth book in the Highland Legends series. This series does need to be read in the order of release.

I missed book two in the series, but managed to read this one with no misunderstanding. The “missing” information is covered quickly. Probably because it has been so many years between the release of book two and this book three.

If asked, I would tell you that “epic fantasy adventure” is not my cup of tea. This is an epic fantasy adventure romance that is completely my cup of tea and a bag of the best chocolate.

I loved the way that Gawain and Chelsea are brought together. That they trust the magick and fate that are integral to their lives before they meet and entwine their futures together…. In everything they agree that together is essential.

All of the characters are complex, but getting to know Gawain and Chelsea as intimately as we do in this story made me feel that I was part of their story in this beautiful, fast-paced, romantic fantasy. Their lives were as magickal as the box that brought them together… as magickal as the castle in which they live… as magickal as the threads that bind their hearts.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via NetGalley, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Time travel and magic are risky to write, I can only imagine. The previous books in this series I found myself wanting more adventure, romance and magic. However, this final piece felt lacking. The imagery was heavy and the magic overdone. It seemed like numerous chapters with Chelsea and Gawain struggling to understand their connection and relating to magic. The conclusion seemed rushed after most of the book revolved around the couple’s magic. I was expecting a climactic ending, while the ending was a conclusion it lacked the power. My copy was provided by Netgalley.

This book was “sold” to me as a Historical romance but reads like a contemporary paranormal. I was hoping for more of an Outlander feel but this isn’t that. There is some historical fiction in it but it’s not written like a historical fiction. I just couldn’t get into it. The characters had no chemistry to me. It’s an interesting concept but I just couldn’t enjoy it.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Romance, Sci fi and Fantasy.

Gah, my bad. I should have looked at my review for the last book, but the magic of the first book and the holiday novella still stays with me after so many years back first reading that I jumped in.
I have the same feelings here as with the last book. I can't connect with the characters, can't feel the romance, don't understand much of the story. Gawain I remember but wasn't convinced of his reasons for no emotions, though certainly when he was with Chelsea I could feel he didn't have any. Chelsea, for a being however many years old I'm assuming that's not her original name, we never really get to know much about her, her purpose, her people, and given she too has this no emotions training, she was incredibly accepting of marriage and all the events that happened.
Its all “poof” magical solutions with no explanations, and even with magic I like some answers ;-) I gave up half way through, I'd rather spend my reading time rereading those first two magical stories. As always its my personal opinion, others will and do love the story.

Stars: Another Two. My fault, I should have stopped at reading the first one and the novella. Just because its not for me though doesn't mean you won't love it. We all want different things. Thankfully ;-)

This book is a great ending to a a brilliant series by the Authors and whilst it can be fread as a standalone I would recommend reading the previous books first to set the characters and worlds in their place .

When Gawain Brodie has to take over leadership of his Scottish clan from his brother he knows he will have to marry ....... something he does not want to do ........... but the fates have chosen his mate .
Chelsea Smith is not quite human , she belongs to a group of evolved assassins able to harness the Earth's elements - her emotions surpressed . Drawn to an ancient box in an office in UCLA she touches it with startling results - it throws her back in time to the magical castle of the Brodie clan .
When the magic of the castle is threatened Gawain and Chelsea must work together to save the clan ........ and also their growing feelings for each other ............. will they survive what is to come ?
This is an entertaining Time Travel / Highlander romance with a difference - fast paced with twist and turns along the way .

I was given an arc of the book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review - The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own

A book that has the feel of Outlander with a girl travelling back in time where she gets involved with a scottish clan and their warrior leader trying to project a magical castle. The story with the magic is interesting and the two leads Gawain and Chelsea are sympathetic mains to root for. The supporting cast is great too with each their own type of magic. It starts out with a bang and some nice action but, for me, it then turns into a lot lusting, fighting attraction and a lot of talking/thinking about their relationship and not enough action. Even the ending which looked to be going into an epic battle direction sizzled out and left me wanting more. So, a good book for you if you want a historical romance, steamy scenes and an interesting enough plot around magic, but if you're looking for more action this isn't the book for you.

I feel very sad that I have read the very last of this series first. It now begs the question do I go back and read the others in the knowledge of the future and the answer is probably yes. There was something about this book that I really liked. I have read many many of t his genre and am perhaps a little jaundiced but the two main characters I found particularly interesting. Yes, there is the usual love story but whilst all the characters are well thought out these two are more complex. The book is fun, as a fantasy book it should be after all this isn't real. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chelsea belongs to a group of evolved assassins with special powers. She senses a powerful magical object, a mysterious metal box, and attempts to steal it. But when she touches it, she is thrown back in time to 13th century Scotland. The box is connected to a magical castle belonging to the Brodie clan and delivers a soul mate through time to the Laird.
Iain Brodie is the current laird, introduced in the first book of the Highland series when Isobel is sent back to him. She has evolved into a powerful time traveller. When she discovers that her husband and children are in danger, Iain passes the lairdship and possession of the magic box to younger brother Gawain in order for them to time travel to a safer location. The second he touches the box, Chelsea arrives.
Soon after the magic of the castle is threatened and Chelsea and Gawain must work together to try and save their clan while wrestling with the emotions of their newly married life.
I read the first book in the series Forged in Dreams and Magick but since this third book said it was stand-alone I skipped the second. There were hints of details from the second book that made me wish I HAD read it first. But that aside, I found this steamy and entertaining. There was a strong female character and a hot Highlander in a kilt. What's not to love?!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. Thank you to Kat Bastion for the free arc.

The story begins with Chelsea Smith who belongs to a secret group of assassins, breaking into a professor’ office. She has been trained to shun emotion, and is an expert in harnessing Earth’s elemental power.. She’s been sent on a mission to UCLA when she sees a professor with a magical box. She breaks into his office as the box tells her when to touch it. She is instantly transported back 700 years to Scotland. She meets the warrior, Gawain Brodie, who because of a past tragedy has hardened his heart to women. His focus is on battles and strategy not women but suddenly a strong willed warrior woman is transported into his life and must become his wife. Also he has suddenly become Laird of his clan and castle as his brother leaves on an adventure in time travel with his wife and kids. Meanwhile, the Brodie castle that has always been protected by magic is under siege by powerful and magical enemies.

*************************SPOILERS******************************************
Here are my issues with this story. We meet Chelsea on a mission but are given little or no information about her or what she is capable of or what her organizations goals are. All we know is that she’s not supposed to have any emotions but recently she has loosened her hold on that rule and is a tough warrior. There is very little character development. Suddenly she is thrust back in time and finds out she has to become a bride and is very accepting and nonchalant about it.
After his mother dies in childbirth and his heartbroken dad dies soon after Gawain decides he doesn’t want to have emotions either but also accepts that he must marry. They both seem to kiss quite often but have ZERO chemistry with each other. They both feel magical surges throughout the castle and the walls and fortifications are magically changing but it’s unclear whether it’s for the better or worse.
After abdicating the Lairdship, his brother, wife and kids return the next day for the wedding and transfer of power but do not take back leadership and do not explain their recent time travel. There are other powerful magic users in the castle but we learn little about them and it’s unclear what their powers consist of.
After the vows weird stuff happens in the castle. Chelsea has to revive and bring a warrior back to life. She and Gawain touch a sphere and are transported to another universe for no apparent reason. They spend two weeks there having sex but can’t figure out how to get home. One day while they’re sleeping a vortex forms and sends them back. They arrive at their wedding banquet only a few minutes after they left. There is another magical siege on the castle and all the magic users need to work together to save the day.
In a nutshell, the characters are poorly developed. The magic surges are poorly described and it’s unclear what has happened and why. They are described at length but are just not understandable. There’s a feeling of energy here then a strong jolt but it’s always unclear what has happened because of the jolt; it felt jumbled. So much goes unexplained. Chelsea and Gawain love scenes go on and on and they both struggle to be the powerful one but they just aren’t that interesting especially when they are at the height of climax and they are both thinking “no emotions”. Well, that’s what I was thinking, too, this is one dimensional and uninteresting. I think there could have been a story here about working together to save a clan but I just didn’t feel the sense of family. It’s talked about but the feeling isn’t there. I wanted to like this but I didn’t care for this book. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this book. There was just something about it that I found particularly intriguing. I've read some time travel romances and liked them but freely admit they are not my top choice. Maybe simply because my romantic heart battles with my firmly grounded head. In spit of this somehow this story clicked with me. If I had to try to pinpoint why specifically I would say that I truly believe that it was these characters that served as the tipping point for me. Gawain and Chelsea were complex and compelling characters that shared a unwelcome but potent attraction and a almost tangible chemistry that generated lots of sizzle and steam. Which was all so perfect but for me the selling point of their romance was that they were both warriors. My heart AND my head could believe that this couple was meant to be, they could not only overcome the obstacles and battles they had to endure in this book but I was firmly left with the belief that long after I had turned the last page their love would continue to go the distance and that is what made this book so special to me.

Kat Bastion brings her epic Highland Legends series to a brilliant end with a novel of grand proportions.
Losing his mother at the tender age of two marked Gawain Brodie indelibly. Growing up, he vowed to help keep his clan safe and never to fall in love. When he is forced to take on the role of ruler of his clan, he’s also bound to marry, and the cosmos has select a fierce warrior from the future as his soulmate.

Chelsea Smith is no ordinary human. She belongs to a group of evolved assassins, trained to suppress their emotions and harness the Earth’s elements. When she senses extraordinary power from an ancient box she seeks to obtain it, but it takes her from UCLA back in time and space and into the arms of a glorious Highland warrior. Can the two embrace the adventure and pleasure before them without succumbing to the emotional bond they’re forming?

In Kat’s Highland Legends books, the world building is phenomenal. There are time travel elements expertly combined with wondrous magic, and legends making each novel uniquely appealing. Add a wonderful pace, beautiful settings, and wonderfully developed characters and you get a story that’s impossible to put down. Found in Flame and Moonlight had me wishing I could manipulate time myself so I could slow it down and savor every delicious morsel of this story while speeding it up so I could get to the happy end.

As with her previous books, Kat creates a strong female lead. As an aside, the novel passes the Bechdel test. But back to the main characters, Chelsea is dedicated, loyal and trustworthy. A warrior “lass” equal to an alpha male Highlander.

While Gawain is all of these things, he also sees her femininity and gentleness and I fell in love with the way they both saw their best qualities and embraced them. There’s also an incredibly deep and sensual attraction between them that made me sigh, swoon and fan myself.

Found in Flame and Moonlight is book #3 of the Highland Legends series by Kat Bastion. Whether or not you’re a fan of fantasy romance, Kat’s story of this magical couple is deeply satisfying. The Highland Legends will be missed. Told from both points of view, with a happy ending.
