I've always loved Nellie Bly. Her bravery, determination, dedication, passion, and intelligence has been something I've alwas aspired. So, reading about her achievements in a graphic form was an amazing opportunity.

The graphic novel did a great job of showing glimpses of her life and career. The art was gorgeous even though it was an Advanced Reader Copy and was unfinished.

However, her character was not fully explored. I understand that the graphic form doesn't allow that much depth, but having her character reduced to only her achievements was not great. Nellie was more than a journalist, an investigator, and a feminist. She was a fierce woman with a challenging life who overcame each obstacle with grace.

I'd like to say thanks for giving me access to this book, but I honestly couldn't read it properly!

I thought it was just my NetGalley app, but it also wasn't working well on my phone Kindle app and desktop app. The artwork is lovely and the story is so interesting, but for some reason the text is so blurry and completely not understandable. I tried but after 2 pages I started getting a migraine and gave up.

Rating this 3 stars for the beautiful artwork.

The incredible Nellie Bly is a comic book biography of the extraordinary contribution to woman’s emancipation of that impressive person Nellie Bly was. I will humbly admit that I knew nothing about that courageous woman before seeing this graphic novel, but I am always interested in learning and reading about strong women of the past, so I was very eager to start this read.

The graphic novel is written like an interview of Nellie Bly by a feminist activist distraught that “things have not changed”. The message to keep our chins up and keep fighting, that we might have more steps to go, but that we must keep moving our feet is a good one. I liked that the pioneer, who did the heavy lifting, keeps nudging us in the right direction. Because when you think about it, this is exactly what those role models do, even long gone, they provide a strong motivation to fight for a world they hoped one day would exist.

Nellie Bly was an investigative journalist in a world where women couldn’t do anything without a chaperon, she did it by sheer will and talent, always having to fight, and deserving our biggest respect. I liked all the little insights we got into her life, even if some did feel much too short and I would have loved to know more: like the way she supported women workers that were seen as disreputable for no reason other than not being able to protect themselves and working themselves to the bone. Lots of anecdotes in that book remind us how far we have come, but that there is still very vulnerable people, and that the divide between classes around the world when we look at it hasn’t really improved. It is a very topical book, because many of the fronts on which Nellie Bly fought still need advocates. I am really glad I got to discover her contribution to humanity, because a step forward for womanhood means a step forward for everybody. When everyone is valued at the same level is when humanity will have finally reached adulthood and be what it should be. Everyone deserves the same chance no matter sex, gender, skin, beliefs, orientations or wallet.

The illustrations were done well, black and painted grey shades, simple, flowing and proportioned lines. Nothing extremely fancy, there is little action so there is little movement in the images, but the text is more “tell” than “show” so it’s not the fault of the artist. There is no great detail but the story comes across very clearly. There is something also very feminine about it, maybe because the lines feel curving rather than sharp, like using a paintbrush and the grey shading enforces that painted quality. I really like the organic feel of the shading.

Overall I really recommend this graphic novel to everyone who is interested in strong women characters. It does come across as more of a listing of merits sometimes, than a real story, which I regret. I would have loved to be plunged into the action of such a life, but I learnt a lot of things and it made me want to learn more about Nellie Bly and maybe do a little investigation of my own. I’m sure I’m not the only one who will feel that way after reading that book!

This graphic novel portrays such an excellent story and of course it is based on the true story of Nellie Bly. It is so important for us to be aware of these incredible women of the past who fought stereotypes and paved the way for women's rights. As a teacher and mother to two girls, I completely endorse this book and the way in which the story is so carefully presented. An excellent piece of work.

I was excited to receive a copy of this book to review as Nellie Bly has always been such an interesting figure to read and learn about.

However, the formatting of this book is horrendous! I personally read on my iPad, I tried reading this both on the NetGalley shelf app and the blue fire app. I then waited a month or so and tried those exact steps over again, and still, it was unreadable. The text is so blurry I was straining my eyes way too much to the point that I was giving myself a migraine. I couldn’t continue and had to DNF the book.

It’s a shame the publisher hasn’t corrected the formatting issue based on the reviews I’ve read. It’s not fair to the author, illustrators, and reviewers, especially with all the low reviews.

I’d rate this a 3 star, just to stay neutral as I currently can’t review what I’m not able to read.
I don’t think it's fair to the creators of the book to have their Goodreads rating affected by the formatting issue on NetGalley, therefore, I will not be officially giving this book a star rating on Goodreads.

I would be interested in purchasing and reading a copy of the book should it become available to me in the future.

Thank you to Netgalley for giving me access to this. I did have to stop reading because it’s not really compatible as an E-book but I’m sure this would be amazing as a physical read

The story seems very interesting I really wanted to know more about Nellie Bly but it was practically impossible to read it on my kindle, I am sorry I could not finish it, but I think I will buy the book later after is release.

After having been recently introduced to the beautiful world of graphic novels, I have been tearing through as many as I can get my hands on. When seeing The Incredible Nellie Bly by Luciana Cimino, I was quite intrigued. I thoroughly enjoyed this "visual biography" of the life of an incredible woman way beyond her time. Though the book was slightly hard to read, solely based on the nature of the e-book/graphic novel combo, the book was eye-opening and informative.

Nellie Bly is one of those names that sound familiar, but somehow always evade me. I’m never completely sure what exactly it was that she did other than someone who fought for women’s rights. I decided that this graphic novel was a perfect way for me to change that and learn more about this incredible lady.

Unfortunately, the graphic novel was a little disappointing. It started off with the fact that the tekst was very difficult to read. I tried the Netgalley Shelf app first, but that was much too small and zooming in merited no results. Therefore, I decided to fire up my laptop and read the novel there, but that wasn’t much better either. After a lot of deciphering, and using the images for clues, I managed to read most of it, though it didn’t do much good for my reading pleasure.

Additionally, I was a little disappointed to see it was all in black and white. My favourite thing about graphic novels is the art work. Marvelling at the images and getting lost in a story told by colour is what usually makes me fall in love with these types of books. That didn’t happen for me in this case.

The story itself was pretty good, though. I definitely reached my goal of learning about Nellie Bly and her achievements. Whenever she is mentioned somewhere from now on I’ll know exactly who she is and what she did. I think it’s a briljant story to put out there and I commend the author fort hat at least.

Thank you to NetGalley and Abrams for kindly providing me with a digital copy of this book for review.
I was absolutely over the moon to receive an e-arc of this book to review. I have read Nellie Bly’s journalistic account of her 10 days in a mad house and found her a fascinating person. I was really looking forward to learning more about her and seeing how her story would be presented in graphic novel format.
The cover of the book is truly stunning and I would be heading straight for it if I saw it on a bookshop shelf. I imagine that the print copy when it is published and all the artwork inside is colourised, will equally be as impressive.
The disappointing thing for me, which other viewers have mentioned also, is that the text in the review copy is very hard to read and I feel I missed an awful lot due to not being able to decipher the words. I think the art work is really impressive though- I particularly appreciated all the facial close ups that really illustrate all the different emotions perfectly. I think it also had a lovely nostalgic feel to it- there’s one image of Nellie sitting on a bench in front of Central Park that I found particularly stunning.
Will certainly be looking for this when it comes out in print as I feel it has the potential to make all kinds of top recommendations lists, it just hasn’t quite fulfilled that potential in the e-arc format though. I do however fully appreciate the chance to review this and thank the author and publishers accordingly.

Like many other readers, I was thrilled to be approved for this graphic novel about one of my heroes! However, the digital ARC is nearly impossible to read. The illustrations are lovely and I am sure this is a great book, but i cannot give it more stars. Hopefully these problems will be solved before release, as this is an important book!

Perhaps it was the version I downloaded, but I wasn't able to read any of the text in the graphic novel. The font/writing was too light to be able to clearly read it. Perhaps it will be better in the full color version that will be released in March 2021

An interesting look into the life of Nellie Bly, a famous journalist, investigator, feminist, and philanthropist. (As the title states.) Unfortunately, the digital arc copy I received from NetGalley wasn't clear enough for me to see most of the writing in the book, but the illustrations were great and what I could read sounded interesting. I had already read "Ten Days in a Mad-House" by Nellie Bly, so I have already learned quite a bit about her time spent in a mad-house in 1887. I had not previously known about her philanthropist endeavors, and this added more depth to my knowledge of her. I look forward to read the printed version when it's out so I can get the full story.

I will not be rating this title publicly as the ebook I received is incredibly difficult to read. I don’t feel I can get a clear perception of the book.

The author Luciana Cimimo has done a commendable job in writing down this brilliant piece of work. She is a master storyteller and it is very much evident from the way she has developed the narrative in a sequential manner. The writing style and choice of words are absolutely fantastic. Overall, it was a fascinating experience. I give this work 4 stars and recommend everyone to give it a try.

Happy Reading.

My thoughts may change if I see a finished copy of this, but the ARC was disappointing. Not the lack of colour, though it would have been nice to get more of a sense of the finished product, but throughout the text was incredibly hard to read, impossible at times. This greatly detracted from the reading experience. I also found the underlying story quite flat, and felt particularly at the start that it was dragging on far too long when I had just wanted to learn more about Nellie herself.

I really wanted to read this book and I was very intrigued by the graphic novel format, but unfortunately I just couldn't read my copy. The quality of the images was so bad that no matter which device/platform I used I just couldn't read a single word of this book, which is a bummer because I had a feeling I was really going to enjoy this story (journalism/feminism are two of my biggest passions).

I was also really intrigued by the fact that this is a translation from Italian and I am translator (from English to Italian), so I was really curious to see how the translation had been done.

I know it's not the authors fault that the copy was not readable and I've see other's reviews about having similar issues, for that reason my rating isn't really correspondent of the content of the book but of the quality of the file.

I hope I'll get to read this soon.

I think it will be great in print or on Adobe Digital Editions, but as an ebook it is a bust. I am familiar with famed American investigative journalist (May 5, 1864-January 27, 1922) Nellie Bly's Ten Days in a Mad-House and Bly vs. Bisland: Beating Phileas Fogg in a Race Around the World and even a short biography or two so I thought that it would be a simple fun read, but the challenge of enlarging print and illustrations in an ebook format were beyond my patience. I am sad about that, but I DO plan to get the print edition when available.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from ABRAMS ComicArts via Netgalley.

This was such a fun read! I had never heard of Nellie Bly before. I never learned about her in school, so this was a fascinating way to get to know her life. I can't wait to read this as a physical copy when it's all finished with the colouring!

I've already read a few books about Nellie Bly, including the terrific EIGHTY DAYS about her around-the-world voyage, and a graphic novel about her seemed a natural. Sad to say, as others have mentioned, the ARC of this book was practically impossible to read. I tried it in Kindle, in Aldiko Reader, and in PocketBook, which was recommended to me by NetGalley. In all three instances, the text was nearly impossible to read, and I finally couldn't stand squinting at my tablet any longer.

I have to say of what I could make out of the story that I wished the author had just stuck to the story of Nellie Bly rather than including the framing story of the 1920s college student who interviews her and who is still fighting against sexual discrimination. Elizabeth Cochran (Nellie) had an interesting enough life that I didn't feel this gimmick was necessary, plus the whole idea seemed a little corny. I realized I'd done a similar thing in 9th grade when our class was asked to do "creative book reports." I had a classmate help me: she played a girl who didn't know where to start in a school report about Louisa May Alcott, and I "appeared" to her as the "ghost" of Alcott to tell her something about my life. I think readers are smart enough to get the story of Cochran's struggle to be accepted in what was then considered a "man's field" and that it is still pertinent today without adding an extra layer to it.
