Lighthearted graphic novel about a warrior goddess. Good for elementary level and struggling MS readers.

As a lover of classical mythology, I was especially excited for this new series. These graphic novels introduce readers to the classical pantheon by staying true to the original myths in an appealing and kid-friendly way. The panel work and illustrations are great.

I always love great books on mythology and Athena by Imogen Greenberg is a welcome addition to my library.
With a positive and empowering tone, Greenberg writes about a goddess who doesn't put up with anyone's crap, not even her dad (Zeus) or her uncle (Poseidon).
Beautifully illustrated, it brings a new perspective on Athena's strengths, perseverance, and achievements.
It's listed as book one of the series. I look forward to more.

*I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher for an honest review of the book.

It seemed a bit advanced for most of the readers I encounter. I would think it a better fit for established graphic novel readers who are interested in mythology.

Athena was a Greek goddess who was born from Zeus’s head. From the moment she was born, she was ready to fight. She was often underestimated because she was a young goddess. However, she was able to hold her own against the gods. Athena defeated her uncle Poseidon to become the patron of Athena. She helped demigods on their quests. She even fought alongside the warriors in the Trojan War and guided Odysseus home. Athena was a strong and determined goddess.

The short stories in this illustrated children’s book show some of the most important moments in Athena’s life. She sometimes got in trouble with her father for meddling in the lives of humans, but she was also clever in finding ways to save people from their mistakes. When the Trojan War was getting out of hand, she persuaded the Greeks to make a large horse to sneak into the city of Troy. Some of these classic images from Greek mythology, such as the Trojan horse and Medusa’s head, came from Athena’s creativity.

Athena is a fun book to introduce children to Greek mythology.

This book sis amazing and everyone should be Lee as it or want to read it. You have characters to fall in love with. The world is real and the rules are established early.. it was a slow start, but once the pacing picked up, it was a good read.

One million stars for Athena- especially as a quick Greek god primer for kids who maybe haven't had a classical education (or read any of the Riordan universes). We added it to our Tween graphic novel round table this year!

**Disclaimer: I received a free copy of Athena: The Story of a Goddess by Imogen and Isabel Greenberg through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this opportunity.

Athena: The Story of a Goddess by Imogen and Isabel Greenberg is a graphic novel version of a few of the highlights of the ancient Greek goddess Athena's life story.  It's presented in an easily accessible way for younger readers.  I rated it four stars on Goodreads.

Here's the summary from Goodreads:

Discover the adventures of Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, war and courage. From her extraordinary birth – sprung from the head of her father, in the midst of a thunderous headache – to her refusal to take no for an answer. Find out how she inspired powerful gods, goddesses and humans and the terrifying fate of those who dared to cross her path.
Follow Athena as she competes against her bad-tempered uncle; watch as she turns her enemy into a spider and join her as she keeps Odysseus safe on his remarkable journey home.
Prepare to be amazed as you uncover the story of one of the most fearless ancient goddesses, and the tales of a world where humans, gods and goddesses could meet. Illustrated and written by the brilliantly talented sister duo, Isabel and Imogen Greenberg, this is a story of daring for goddesses-in-the-making.

I like the idea of short graphic novels that highlight the stories of one mythological figure.  I find mythology really interesting and so I like to learn more about it.  Admittedly, most of the content in this particular graphic novel was information that I already knew.  However, I wouldn't say that I'm strictly the intended audience.  This graphic novel is aimed at a younger audience who want to learn more about Greek mythology.  It's definitely informative.

I liked the combination of images and text.  The drawings illustrated the story well.  You had a clear idea of what was going on.  The eARC that I received said that the illustrations would be in colour for the final edition, and that would be even better than it was.  I will admit that sometimes the formatting was a little hard to read on my phone, but I didn't take anything off my rating because of that.  That just couldn't be helped I don't think.

The stories were simplistic and easy to understand.  It's a well suited book for a child, and would be a good introduction to the idea of Athena.  It's definitely worth checking out.

Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War is a lovely introduced for readers wanting to learn more about mythology. There's also some great girl power in this book as well! I do like the introduction to the Greek Gods in this book - the images that go along with them match wonderfully with how I image the Gods.

I will say, about a third of the book is being introduced to the Gods, and then you get 2/3rds of content for the actual story.

This book is a must read for fans of mythology or want to see more women leading our books! Athena is a powerful warrior, and is a perfect addition to your shelf.

Three out of five stars.

A fun way to get introduced to Athena and her many myths, especially if introducing her stories to younger readers. The illustrations are quite nice and overall a great basic intro to the goddess.

This was a great collection of myths surrounding Athena. It gives the basic myths of Athena, both positive and negative. I think this would be a great starter collection for younger kids who are being introduced to Greek mythology. The illustrations were beautiful...my only dislike was sometimes the comic text was too small. Otherwise, the comics and the blurbs integrated well together.

I received an electronic ARC from ABRAMS Kids through NetGalley.
The Greenbergs work together to create this version of Athena's story. The Greek goddess of wisdom meddled in human affairs and learned the hard way (lost her temper and turned Arachne into a spider) to let humans figure life out on their own with occasional promptings.
The book should appeal to middle grade readers exploring Greek mythology but feels a bit simplified for that level. The authors have tweaked some information about Athena but kept it focused on the main points of her myths.

Athena is the goddess of many things. Courage and strategy, art and mathematics, wisdom and war. But, beyond each of her strengths lies a story from Greek mythology. From her patronage of Athens to her invention of weaving, Athena’s feats are the legends that defined Greek mythology in countless ways. In Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War, readers can experience the stories that defined this powerful goddess in a fun graphic novel format!

A good first taste of Greek mythology for younger readers. This short book is done more in the style of an illustrated novel than a graphic novel. The illustrations are done with bold line work and the text clear and fairly simple for the content. The back matter includes a glossary, however a pronounciation guide to some of the more complex Greek names would have been helpful for younger readers.

As a child I used to be obsessed with Greek mythology and Athena was my favorite goddess. I loved that there was a graphic novel to learn more about Athena specifically. I think this is a great novel to have to kids who are interested in Greek mythology, it's quite educational and delves into many great tales about the goddess herself. The digital edition was hard to read, but I have no doubt that the published copy will be a joy to read!

Thank you to #NetGalley and Abrams Kids for allowing me the opportunity to read a digital ARC of Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War by Imogen and Isabel Greenberg. This middle grades graphic novel will be released in June 2021. All opinions are my own.

This graphic novel focuses on the Greek Goddess, Athena. It begins with the story of her birth which is followed by a series of stories that prominently feature her including the stories of Arachne, Perseus, Paris, and Odysseus. This is a super fun and interesting way to introduce younger readers to Greek mythology. Many MG readers love graphic novels making it the perfect format to introduce these myths in an accessible way. The illustrations are fun and highlight the stories. The book is an odd combination of story and graphic novel. Elements of it are narrated and written like a story only to be interrupted by comic strip panels and larger illustrations. I think this book would be a great way to introduce upper elementary students to mythology.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read Athena.

I love Greek Mythology and Athena is my favourite god/goddess.

Overall, I though this was an educational and enjoyable children’s graphic novel that introduces the reader to Greek mythology and more specifically Athena.

The digital version is a bit difficult to read through, but I do think this must look gorgeous in print copy!

Like previous reviews have mentioned, this title is definitely not digital friendly. You cannot zoom in while reading on mobile, so some comic panels were very difficult or impossible to read. The rest of the book was alright, though it probably looks and flows better in a physical format versus on mobile. I love Greek Mythology, so anything related to it I will read and enjoy in some way. This title is definitely aimed towards a younger audience, and could be considered a very, very beginner introduction to some myths around Athena.
