A good cookbook who want to have a variety of options for lasagnas and casseroles. Recipes seem decent but not for me since I am not huge on this type of food.

I couldn't believe how many different and unique variations of lasagna there could be. It seems like the perfect meal to make during the winter season, often made ahead of time which is very helpful during this busy time. Many of the recipes sound amazing, my only complaint would be for more pictures along with the recipe because I am a very visual person and love to 'see' what I am supposed to be doing.

I appreciated just how many variations of the classic lasagna were presented in this book. With colder weather fast approaching, many of these meals would make a great comforting dinner. Unfortunately, there are not enough photos or visuals to accompany the otherwise mouthwatering recipes. While I think experienced home cooks would do well having only text to follow, visual elements would appeal to a wider audience and range of cooks.

While the official definition of lasagna is “pasta in the form of broad often ruffled ribbons or a baked Italian dish consisting of wide strips of pasta cooked and layered with meat or vegetables, cheese, and tomato sauce,” Julia Rutland, writer and recipe developer takes lasagna to a higher realm in her excellent cookbook, 101 Lasagnas & Other Layered Casseroles, including dozens of mouthwatering baked (mostly) and layered dishes and desserts. While technically not all of them could be defined as “lasagna,” this cookbook has innovative and unique recipes for layered dishes that are worth preparing. She has included recipes from all over the world, and uses not only standard lasagne (when referring to just the pasta, the word ends in e), but other things such as tortillas in the layers.

Anyone who likes to serve casseroles with layers will love the ideas in this cookbook, and since the instructions are easy-to-follow, every cook, from novice to advanced will be able to turn out picture-perfect casseroles that will please everyone. Some of the recipes have several steps, but the steps are not difficult. Another bonus is that many of the dishes featured are make-ahead, and a big help to those cooks who are busy and those cooks who want everything done ahead if they are entertaining so that they can enjoy their guests.

Some of the favorite dishes are an Egg and Bacon Brunch Lasagna, Pepperoni Lasagna, Chicken & Caramelized Onion Lasagna with Blue Cheese Béchamel, and Turkey Pot Pie Lasagna. There are also a few mouthwatering dessert lasagnas, some even using lasagna noodles.

This cookbook does have some beautiful photographs, but unfortunately not a photograph of every dish. That is the only drawback, because everything else about the cookbook is very positive. This cookbook is definitely recommended for everyone who likes layered casseroles.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this cookbook. I am glad to have the chance to learn more about cooking lasagnas and related layered casseroles from this read.

As with all cookbooks, it's important to know 1) the target audience and 2) the modernity involved. For this cookbook, I think it's open for cooks of all skill levels, as there is a good range of options that include the basics and some more experimental recipes. As for modernity, if you have basic kitchen equipment and know-how, you can do these pretty readily.

What I thought was good: unique recipes, cool options and ideas for the "layered dish." I associate casseroles with comfort food, go-to dishes for sharing or bringing to dinners/family meals, etc. So, there's something for everybody and you can shake it up and try something new.

Where I thought improvement could happen: more photos!!! To get people to buy things like these rather than look at the internet, visuals are everything. Also, dietary info or special types for diets / special needs. That would be great in a huge book like this.

I cannot wait to cook something from this cookbook! I love the layout and the basics of lasagna given at the beginning. The organization of sections is great too!

I love lasagna! I have always thought a good classic shouldn't be messed with, but this book has some very scrumptious sounding variations.

Who knew there were so many variations of Lasagna!

I really enjoyed the ideas and recipes shared in this book, and have so many I am planning on trying out - I've only attempted the Dutch Oven Stove Top so far and it was delicious!

On the downside though, as a visual person, I would have preferred to see a lot more photographs of the dishes shared, only a handful of the images are actually of the recipes, they are more of the ingredients so it's hard to know what you're aiming for when cooking. Maybe this is due to the similar nature of the options, however, my personal view is that there was more of a balance to be found.

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of 101 Lasagnas & Other Layers Casseroles.

Who doesn't love lasagna? The only reason I don't eat it more often is because I find it time consuming to make. I'm not going to lie - I'm a lazy cook.

The recipes in 101 Lasagnas & Other Layers Casseroles are creative and unique, concoctions I've never considered making before but will now seriously consider.

I also felt the tips in the beginning of the cookbook super helpful, especially for people who aren't great cooks. Like me!

My favorite part (with all cookbooks) are desserts, which I didn't expect so I was thrilled to see the section.

My only caveat is the lack of photos. There weren't enough photos accompanying the recipes and when there was a photo, it was a photo of an onion or a single ingredient.

This would make a great gift for anyone who loves casseroles and/or has a big household to feed.

Mmmmm lasagna. Is there anything more wonderful than a dish made from everything you love layered upon layers of other things you love? Pasta, cheese, veggies, sauce, mmmm…. The recipes in this cookbook contain most of what you’d expect in a lasagna cookbook, but also some interesting variants. I wasn’t sure you could do a seafood lasagna, but apparently you can! I was most interested in the dessert lasagnas – aside from the usual tiramisu there are some absolutely delicious sounding-confections like a peanut butter chocolate layered thing that sounds like diabetes in a pan and seriously give it to me now. Or an espresso crepe cake. Sooo good.

When I think of lasagna it's noodles, sauce, cheese and meat layered together. This book gives a whole new meaning to lasagne. There are Mexican , keto friendly, breakfast, chicken, and even a lasagne for 1. There are combinations that I never would have thought of. Great book.

I can not say how happy I am that I got this book today. My dad has been sick w/shingles, so I have been cooking from scratch. I am a decent cook, but actually have never made a Lasagna. My mother-in-law did it for me. I just told my dad last week, I thought I’d try Lasagna.

My favorite recipes are 1) Lasagna Bolognese, 2) Meatloaf Lasagna (looks the easiest, probably do that one first), 3) Moussaka-Style Lasagna ( sounds really good and it’s Greek-Yum), 4) Mushroom and Alfredo Lasagna (fancy mushrooms, butter and cream, what could go wrong), 5) Pesto, Peppers, & Prosciutto Lasagna and 6) Instant Pot Meat Lasagna ( Instant Pot, I got at Christmas; not as lame as it sounds, my 2 year refrigerator has been broken for 5 months of this year and they can not fix it, so I can not push that off to my usual procrastination).

So, these all sound great! I can’t wait to try some. The book is helpful in the beginning and tells you all the pots and utensils you need. I used to sell cookware, and got the best accessories, so I imagine I have at least 2 of everything on the list. I think most people would have these though and you can always substitute pans a little. Most important the ingredients I know and can easily get. Each recipe has a picture w/it. That I really appreciate. I find that essential for cookbooks.

So, when I make a recipe I will post it. These recipes are just a few to try going into the fall. There are 101! Some are actually desserts, always a bonus. I can’t wait to get started.

Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. I will definitely use it.

I'm not normally a lasagna or layered casserole person simply because I really dislike tomato sauce. However, this book had lots of different recipes and takes on dishes I didn't think o f alternatives for. I'm looking forward to trying out a few of these and believe they will become staples in my kitchen.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.

Well now I'm starving and have no ingredients for lasagna! This is a great cookbook and the pictures make me drool. Can't wait to try a few out.

There are a lot of creative recipes here for as many different kinds of lasagnas-sweet as well as savory – that you can imagine! The tips at the beginning are very, very helpful… I did not know a lot of what this author shared as far as ingredients, baking pans… Etc. I agree with several other reviewer‘s who were wishing that there were more photographs, but I will note that the photographs that were included are beautifully styled and laid out.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and publisher, for an advanced reading copy of this cookbook in exchange for my honest review.

This cookbook opens with discussion on the bakeware used. It's something I never really think about, glass versus metal, cast iron versus aluminum. It breaks down the benefits and cons of each type, which I found interesting.

This book has personality, which is something I immensely appreciate in a cookbook. Advice for sticking noodles includes 'sighing loudly' as well as some legitimate tips to get them unstuck.

There's discussion on types of noodles, types of meat, types of cheese, types of sauces, advice for layering as well as covering it versus uncovering. And then it gets to the recipes.

And recipes there are! Tons of ideas including meat, chicken, seafood, vegetarian and dessert. Some classics and some I have never even thought of (And I've done plenty of searching on pinterest for lasagnas haha)

Lots of great ideas here, most ingredients are going to be easy to find. While most lasagnas take a bit of work and prepping various layers, these work great for making ahead, freezing, and usually plenty for leftovers, which can be the benefits of putting in the work.

I definitely think there's something for everyone in this book. Oven, slow cooker, even instant pot options, keto friendly, vegetarian and classic recipe options. A great addition to any comfort lovers kitchen.

As for photos, I was a bit disappointed. With over 100 recipes, there's only 54 pictures which seems like a lot. But only about 30 of these are of the actual recipes. Many pictures are of a single ingredient, like a cabbage or a butternut squash or a mushroom. This makes me sad. I want to see what every recipe looks like if I can, though I know this isn't always possible.

101 Lasagnas & Other Layered Casseroles is a recipe collection developed by Julia Rutland. Due out 8th Dec 2020 from Simon & Schuster on their Tiller Press imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The introduction contains a good capsule survey of baking & casserole dishes and pans, as well as noodles, meats, cheese, and other ingredients as well as lasagna construction. The recipes are arranged by category: meat, poultry, vegetarian, seafood, and dessert. I really appreciated the inclusion of plant based dishes. Many of these are -hearty- one-dish mains that even my meat loving family really devoured (without complaining).

Ingredient measurements are supplied in American measurements only. There's a conversion chart for metric measures in the appendices. There's no included nutritional information. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in sidebars with the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex.

The photography is not at all abundant; very few of the recipes are illustrated, but at least most of the photographs which are included are clear and well done. I wish there had been more serving suggestions, but I do understand that extra photography increases the price of book projects very quickly. The photography also has a very retro feel - it reminds me of 80s-90s ladies' magazine layouts (not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to consider).

The recipes we tested were without major errors and were tasty and appealing.

Three and a half stars (mostly because of the lack of photography).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is mostly lasagnas, including some sweet recipes.

I wish there were pictures of each recipe because that's something I look for in cook books. There's a variety of recipes including sea food lasagna and chicken lasagna and even recipes for lasagna with vegetables like kale.

I like the variety of ingredients to try. Some of the recipes seem time intensive but could be good.

It's an interesting recipe book with different layered pasta options!

There's a lot to like in this cookbook and a bit that could be improved.

The good -- there's a huge range of recipes for lasagnas and similar layered meals. It includes some vegetarian, keto, gluten free and occasional vegan recipes (though it sometimes calls for ingredients hard to find in smaller towns, like specialty keto vegetable noodles). The recipes sound tasty and the author clearly is experienced in cooking them. Most of the ingredients are pretty easy to find.

What could be improved -- there aren't many photos and the photos it does have are often of a few ingredients instead of the dishes. The recipes of finished dishes are oddly retro and remind me of 70's cookbooks. There is also no nutritional information. If you're going to have recipes for dietary needs like keto, it's often important for those folks to have this kind of information. The recipes tend to be slightly complicated with several from-scratch components. I like this, but those who like to open a jar may feel overwhelmed.

All in all, I found it to be a fun cookbook and I'm looking forward to trying a few recipes. Quite a few of them are similar to dishes I already make (my kids' go-to company recipe from when they're itty bitty on up has always been Mexican lasagna -- layer corn tortillas, refried beans, frozen corn and a jar of salsa in several layers, cover and microwave 6 minutes, cut into wedges and serve with toppings like shredded lettuce, cheese, sour cream and diced avocados -- it's naturally gluten free, vegetarian/vegan depending on toppings, inexpensive, high in nutrition, fast and easy to make, and super tasty). This book is sure to inspire lots of fun culinary adventures.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
