- PLEASE BE AWARE THAT I DIDN’T FINISH THIS BOOK -
I was really looking forward to this book, but unfortunately I did not end up finishing it. I struggled to connect with Olivia as I found her to be annoying and patronising. I was really interested because of the premise, but after reading up to chapter 7, I felt that the topic of mental health would not be handled sensitively or in a realistic way, so I decided that I would move onto my next read. The writing style was a lot of more ‘telling’ than showing, and everything felt very fake and forced. McMaster attempted to display the pressure of school, but I felt like I was watching an over exaggerated film, especially as the teachers were very unprofessional and the students were extremely unrealistic. I believe that with more drafts and further editing, this book could become something more readable and appealing, but at the moment it was just not there for me.

I really love the characters and the concept. Self-discovery. Mental health conquering. Cute romance. It had all the makings of a great story. But certain parts fell flat.

Toward the end of the story a secret identity kept getting mentioned. They posted gossip online about everyone in their grade. But no one knew who was ruining all those lives. Then the Liv found out who it was! Should be super exciting right?

Nope. Because the gossip blog was mentioned once before this and didn’t have a negative impact on anyone throughout the book. Makes no sense why the reader should be so invested at the book’s conclusion!

Up until that point I was totally invested, despite some minor problems I had with delayed character details. But I think those were just the early signs that the author wrote the book, adding more intricate details as they went, and never went back to make sure they were threaded through the story properly.

I still enjoyed the book. I truly loved Gareth and Liv. I completely understand Liv’s point of view and what she is going through. And Gareth is so sweet.
