Mr. Dugoni has done it once more! Tracy is finally going back to work after having her daughter and her boss has a trick up his sleeve. He gave her position to another detective so basically she is pushed into cold cases.
So she dives into a cold case  where a little girl disappeared without a trace in a cornfield and also a case with Kinsington where a young woman vanished while she was jogging down a trail. Now both of these cases are connected by family secrets!  Now along with these cases she is also looking into two other cold cases where two prostitutes disappeared, somehow Tracy feels in their gut that they are related!
Quickly Kins and Tracy have their eyes set on three brothers that they feel strongly that are related to the cases they have in hand but they just do not know how just yet!
Now, I have been a Tracy Crosswhite fan for a while and this was an amazing addition to the series and if you love detective work and mysteries then this is the series for you! Everytime I pick up one of the books from this series I am on the edge of my seat! I definitely recommend it!
Thank you Netgally and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to read this one!

This is such an absolutely incredible series! I'm a longtime fan of Robert Dugoni, but somehow had never gotten around to the Tracy Crosswhite books. Once I became aware of them, the problem was that there were so many - and starting a new series by an author I love with numerous books meant I was going to be tied up reading all of those books until they were finished... And because of other review commitments, that was a tough commitment to make.

Then I saw that the eighth book was on here, and wished for it - and my wish was granted. I knew there was no way I could read book eight without any of the earlier books, so I did what I had long been wanting to do and started with book one. I worked my way through the series in record time...

This is an absolutely incredible series of books, populated by brilliantly articulated characters, intricate and detailed plot lines, and fascinating explorations of the human psyche and terrible things that people do to one another... This eighth book was brilliant. With the same style, verve, and eye for detail brought to all the other books, Dugoni has continued to develop Tracy Crosswhite as a woman growing into herself, first as a young woman recovering from a horrific incident in her family's life, then as a detective, a wife, and a mother. Dugoni has done a masterful job creating a woman who is superhuman yet still believable and relatable. Crosswhite is the detective we all want looking after us.

Every book contains two major cases that are explored in parallel, and the cases in this eighth book were striking in their contrasts and yet strikingly similar at the same time. The pacing was spot on and the cases fascinating - and horrifying. The book was brilliant. The series is amazing and if you're not familiar with it you should definitely start with book one and not stop until you're caught up. Then you, like me, can start counting the days until the next book...

Thanks to NetGalley for this book. I have enjoyed this entire series but this one somewhat less than the previous books. I think this is really just me because I do not like the subject matter and I hated who turned out to be one of the bad guys.

Obstinate and relentless, Tracy will not let her mind get clouded by other feelings than those relating to her cases and that may be the cause of her success and also her demise. A great plot with a lot of twists and turns that gets the reader´s attention from the beginning. The main character has to fight against pettiness in the work place, report to a bad boss, and keep her personal life together, in spite of all trauma she has lived with and has to see.
Very entertaining and easy to read!

After an extended leave from the Seattle Police Department, Tracy finds herself assigned to cold case files. She digs in and a five-year old missing child case catches her attention. While pursuing this case, she is roped into helping her former partner in Violent Crimes with a current missing person case. A runner has gone missing in an area of Seattle that also has two missing prostitute cold cases.

I love how this story was written and how everything intertwined.

This is the 8th installment in the Tracy Crosswhite series and like the rest, this book is fast paced, intriguing and well written.

I like Tracy and Dan and in general all the secondary characters in the series. In this particular book Tracy seems to have lost a bit of her kick. In the novel there is barely any interaction with other characters that intertwined in the past stories. This is perhaps my least favorite of all books in the series.

I also have an issue with the relationship between the cases she is trying to solve: Tracy has gone back after her leave, she takes a role in the cold case department and at the same time she is helping her old partner to solve an active case in the violent crimes department. The fact that by pure coincidence all the cases she is involved with happen to be tied it is quite unbelievable. All the actions she takes at the end of the book, her personal investment and involvement in her main cold case seem unrealistic.

This is not a bad story, it is just a bit disappointing when comparing it to some of its predecessors.
3 and 1/2 stars. I will read the next book in the series when it comes out.

Thanks #Netgalley, Thomas and Mercer and #RobertDugoni for an electronic ARC of this book.

The author continues to develop the Tracy Crosswhite character in this 8th installment in the series. Not only a twisted story of abduction, deplorable behavior and actions, deceit, but also a coming of age as a mother story.
Several times throughout the story, emotional moments present themselves, all the way through to the epilogue.
It really comes full circle and details neatly wrapped up. Remained engaged through the whole read.

Loved this book, just like all the others in the Tracey crosswhite saga it was full of suspense. I hope there's more to come.

Tracy Crosswhite is a detective in the Seattle Police Department. She is returning to her job after an extended maternity leave. Her boss, with whom she has a less than good relationship, takes great pleasure in reassigning her to the cold case unit. The first case she looks at is the disappearance of a 5-year-old little girl 5 years earlier. Her parents were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and each blames the other for the disappearance. At the same time, her former partner, Kins Rowe asks for her assistance in a current case - the disappearance of a young woman who had been jogging on an isolated trail in a quiet neighborhood in the city. Tracy has also inherited the cold cases of two other women who have gone missing not far away. Can they possibly be related? As the investigation evolves, suspects come into focus. If I have one criticism of the book is that the resolution of the case of the missing little girl seems a little bit of an afterthought. This is the 8th book in the Tracy Crosswhite series and the first that I have read (although not the first by this author). I had no problems not having read the earlier books in this series, but I plan to go back to the beginning as I found the main character intriguing and Dugoni’s style enjoyable. My thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was my first in the Tracy Crosswhite series. As far as the mystery goes I don't feel I missed anything by not reading the previous books but there were things mentioned from Tracy's past that I didn't understand but I will when I go back to read the rest of the series.

In this outing Tracy comes back from her leave to find out that her job in Violent Crimes is no longer available but she is offered Cold Cases when that detective retires. At first she is reluctant but becomes intrigued by the case of a missing five-year-old, Elle Chin. Her parents are going through a contentious divorce and on an outing with her father she disappears from a corn maze. In the meantime her old partner, Kins, asks for her help in the case of a missing young woman, Stephanie Cole, who was jogging in a park and disappeared. The bulk of the story is about the search for Stephanie and it was a good one. At one point I audibly gasped at the turn of events. I had actually forgotten about Elle Chin. The last chapter of the book wraps up that story line.

I liked Tracy and look forward to getting to know her better as I go back and read the rest of the series.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this book.

This is the 8th book in this series by an Author new to me - and can in my opinion be read as a standalone .

Detective Tracy Crosswhite has been on extended maternity/compassionate leave and on returning to work finds her old position gone to another woman - she decides that working cold cases will give her a better work / life balance especially as her infant daughter is only 10 months old - with a view to taking back her old position at a later date .
Tracy has picked three cold cases - two missing prostitutes and one of a 5yr old child , abducted from a corn field .Matters soon take on a twist , the case of a missing 19yr old woman new to the area is being overseen by her old partner Kinsington Rowe who asks for her help , drawing her back into an active investigation .
Trying to give all these case the attention they deserve is hampered by the secrets held behind closed doors - just who is telling the truth ? just who is hiding behind their lies ?
All the increased stresses of her work life along with her resolves to solve her sister's case worries all those around her - but she is , as ever determined to get to the truth whatever the cost .

This is a complex , fast paced thriller that keeps the reader onboard to the very end .
Having enjoyed this one so much I will be going back and reading the previous books in the series .

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Don't let the fact that this is book number eight in the series deter you from reading if you are new to the series. Each book, while making mentions of things that happened in the past does so in such a way that it is easy to follow without being confused.

That being said, this one felt slower than me, and that might be due in part to Tracy's new role in the cold case file and the cold case of a vanished five-year-old girl. I understand that this comes into play later on, but I feel like the time spent focusing on that case would have been better spent adding more details to the main case so that it felt smoother. I also didn't care for the way that particular thread was tied off - I agreed with Tracy's reasoning, but it seemed a waste of time in my opinion.

When it comes to the active investigation she found herself a part of, I feel like a lot of people will take offense to the way one of the characters was treated. The reader is told that he is "slow" and it is obvious from the way he is written that he suffers from a developmental disability. Time and again, his older brother abuses him and degrades him for it, however I felt it went to show not only the cruelty the brother was capable of, but also just how vulnerable disabled people can be if left in the wrong hands.

I will say there was a bit of a oh heck moment near the end of the story that I didn't see coming, but that is one of those little things I have come to expect from this author, and am rarely disappointed.

Having said all that, I do believe this will appeal to those who enjoy well written police procedural novels and/or are prior fans of this series. I can't wait for the next installment in this series!

Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas and Mercer publishers ,and Robert Dugoni for this ARC. I read only a few male authors, and Mr. Dugoni is one of those few. In fact, I never fail to read one of his books. My favorite is his Tracey Crosswhite series. This author can write about a protagonist female, but still make her sensitive and caring. Adding a husband and a daughter into her life has not stopped Tracey from having still another great storyline or characters. Always 5 star for this author !
I share my reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, Twitter, Instagram, and especially with my all my book clubs and their members.

Retribution doesn't bring closure. Peace of mind brings closure.

Escapism at its best with a great nail biting thriller. It had a human aspect as Tracy gives a sh*t about the victims. Now being a mother of a daughter, her sister ultimate murder still haunts her. She messed up and still deals with the pain. She has come back from maternity leave and has been forced into another department of cold cases. Missing 5 year old, two missing prostitutes, and a current case that her old partner is handling. A runner that has disappeared without a trace by a neighborhood trail head.

I like that you know all the players up front. A get into the head of each character that pulls me into the prose and the development of the characters. The evidence leads and I follow. Dugoni always surprises his readers and I was had. Crosswhite's character is still developing and the cold cases have so much potential. It digs in her own personal tragedy while she helps others with their current crisis.

A special thank you to Thomas Mercer and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Robert Dugoni has once again brought out the brilliance of Tracy Crosswhite. I love the way she can maintain being a great detective while dealing with a boss that tries to manipulate her because he has a sore ego. Working cold cases may not have been what she wanted, but once again her quick thinking solves the case in the end. I was on the edge of my "kindle" trying to figure out who the culprit was in the missing women and stunned in the end. I can't wait to read more about Tracy Crosswhite in the future.

Another great book from Robert Dugoni!

Back at work, Tracy Crosswhite finds herself exiled to the Cold Case department by her boss Nolasco, who has filled her position with someone else while she was on leave. But the move turns out better than expected in a number of ways, and Tracy is drawn in to the case of a missing 5 year old. Caught in the middle of a brutal divorce battle, a 5 year old disappears from a corn maze on a night out with her father. At the same time, she is compelled to work on the case of two missing prostitutes. When a young woman goes missing while jogging, Tracy helps her former partner Kinsington Rowe investigate, even though it’s not a cold case. As Tracy helps Kin investigate the missing jogger, they begin to think that some of the locals may know more than they are letting on about the missing young woman.

Fast paced, well written and a lot of fun to read, In her Tracks will keep you turning the pages until the surprise conclusion! Loved this book!

In Her Tracks by Robert Dugoni published on 4/20 and I'm so glad I had a chance to get an early glimpse at this one! In Her Tracks is the 8th novel in the Tracy Crosswhite series from Dugoni, and I've been a long-standing fan of this series, so taking on this newest addition was a no brainer.

Tracy Crosswhite became a detective to gain access to more resources to investigate the disappearance of her sister. We meet Tracy in book one of this series 20 years after her sister disappeared, when a body is discovered near where Tracy's sister disappeared. That first book does a great job of setting Tracy's "origin story" and also setting her free (well, as free as she can be) to move forward into other investigations and other parts of her life. The books between that first one and this newest one each detail a new investigation, advancements in Tracy's personal life and relationships with her colleagues and friends. Tracy is REALLY good at her job, but has to deal with sexism and discrimination in the workplace, as well as her past always lingering when investigations bear resemblances to that of her sister's case.

While each book can definitely be read as a standalone, I do recommend starting this series from the beginning if you like mysteries featuring a female detective, as they really do build on each other and give you backstories and history for Tracy and her colleagues. I've read a lot of Dugoni's other work as well and think he's an excellent writer. This book continues on the trajectory of being well-written and researched (with certain liberties most mystery and thriller authors take when it comes to timelines) and had me gasping at a surprise reveal towards the end. I enjoyed watching Tracy take on the new challenge of balancing motherhood and detective work, and embrace her new role in Cold Cases. I think becoming a mother has made Tracy an even better and more empathetic detective, and has her put herself in less hairy situations, which my anxiety appreciates. I can't wait to find out what Tracy will end up investigating next!

CW: sexual assault, physical assault.

Book Review: In Her Tracks (Tracy Crosswhite #8) by Robert Dugoni
(Published by Thomas & Mercer, April 20, 2021)

4.5 Stars.

Seattle Police Dept., Justice Center, 5th Avenue, downtown Seattle.

Tracy Crosswhite, crack SPD Violent Crimes detective and new mom, comes back to work after an extended maternity (and PTSD) leave, and finds herself relegated to a dead-end job at the department

Her "restful" maternity leave at hometown Cedar Grove, WA had proved anything but ("A Cold Trail", Book 7), as the facts on a decades-old murder case in connection with the disappearance of her own sister, Sarah, get tied with the unravelling of an elaborate high-stakes graft and corruption scheme by local town officials, which culminated with the arrest of both the Cedar Grove mayor and police chief.

But for the new mom, the price was steep - harrowing life-and-death experiences for herself and her young family, hubby, Dan and baby daughter, Danielle.

Which in turn leads to an extended PTSD leave.

In the meantime, the "fifth wheel" of her Seattle PD team, gets offered a permanent spot.

-----

Book 8. Notwithstanding her ten-year tenure with elite SPD Violent Crimes Section's A-team, Detective Crosswhite finds herself relegated to the drudgery of a one-woman, pre-retirement desk job, the low-priority Cold Case section, ensconced in a glorified broom closet.

But even from the doldrums, the sharpshooting detective and two-time recipient of the SPD's Medal of Valor, its highest honor, is not to be denied, as she lends key assistance to both cold - and live "A-Team" cases.

-----

In its eight iteration, Robert Dugoni's timeline in the series written from 2014 to the present is quite remarkable, even prescient.

While other fictional characters may never age book after book in a series, and in the process, lose that emotional, real-life connection with readers, on the contrary the Crosswhite series covers an evolving lifespan, even as the author spices his feisty protagonist's post-maternity, early middle age detective life with fresh material, no less enticing and creative than the full-blown action-packed version of the younger deadeye twenty-something Tracy Crosswhite.

A must-read!

Review based on an ARC from Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley.

In the 8th book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, Tracy, a Seattle violent crimes detective is just returned from maternity leave and assigned to the cold case unit. In the process of reviewing files, in particular that of a missing 5-year-old, she is drawn into a current investigation. Balancing new motherhood with two important cases, Tracy knows time is not on her side.

The story dealt with several different cases with a twist I didn't see coming. I really like the main characters in this series. I enjoy the way Tracy is able to put pieces together to solve the crime. I was especially intrigued with the character of Kaylee Wright, a certified tracker, who helps law enforcement reconstruct what happened using the smallest clues.

On a personal level, this novel sees Tracy grappling with whether to continue as a detective due to a combination of a tragedy in her past and her work on cold cases. I like the way Tracy's character grows throughout the series. It feels very realistic.

This was a gripping mystery that kept me turning pages. I highly recommend this whole series. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an e-copy of this book.
