I read the blurb for this one and it sounded amazing! I loved the concept and it started off very well, but I found certain bits just weren’t really explained very well. For example, the love interest Em I didn’t get them as a couple and there was no build up to the intensity level of their relationship. I feel like a bit more time at the beginning could have been spent on this aspect to make their connection more believable.
My favourite character was Rockslide, he was just a devalued demon looking for somewhere to belong! 💜
All in all, I felt like this story had so much potential but it just didn’t have the wow! Which is such a shame as I was very much looking forward to this book!

This book took me forever to read. I was having difficulty getting into the book. The book was confusing as to why things were happening. I did enjoy the character Rockslide.

This genie failed to grant my wishes!

I was half expecting a fantasy novel about myths and magic, but the premise described a modern adaptation of the classic “genie”. How modern can a genie be? My three wishes before reading: to be captivated and quickly pulled into the story, to feel for the protagonist, and I hope the magic is not used to answer all problems! Unfortunately, only one of my wishes was granted: the story was captivating (kind of).

The author had a geni(e)us idea and I really loved the setting and the world he built. His descriptions of the scenes where magic happens and where the laws of physics and of the universe are bent are absolutely beautiful and made my imagination go wild trying to visualize it all. And even though I enjoyed some sections of the book, I didn’t really get a grasp of it as a whole.

As for the characters, I just could not feel any connections. I know there were attempts at making the reader feel for the protagonist, but it just didn’t do it for me. The main character’s background was seemingly supposed to be a big reveal but ended up just flopping completely. And the secondary characters felt like just that: secondary characters.

Everything felt too easy, mainly because of the magic wishes. I know it can’t be easy to write a story where you have to set up some problems that can’t just be wished away. But even non-magical events happened a little too easily.

Finally, I felt like the genres were all mixed up while reading. I’d be reading a fantasy novel one minute, then a romance the next. It felt like the “genies reinvented” theme should target a teen or young adult audience, but some sections of the book are definitely NOT for teens.

If I do recommend this book, it will be to a curious mind looking for something different and new. It’s a quick laid-back read, but you shouldn’t go in with high expectations.

An absolutely fantastical read!

Giniecide completely entrancing. I did not put it down until the very end. It's perspective on the genie legend is so fresh that it should be in a category of it's own. It is a great read for lovers of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

While this book held a lot of promise, it was severely lacking in development and structure. There were a lot of things happening at once and then not a lot happening right after it really didn't hold my interest. The characters felt a bit flat and lacking personality and some of the more adult content was odd and awkward.

The formatting of the book was sporadic and needs a lot of attention. Some chapters are fine while others are all over the place with indentations, line breaks, and pauses. I feel as though with some work, this could really be a great story, but as of right now it still feels like a rough draft.
