I think for existing fans of the author, this book will be a bigger hit. I wasn't familiar prior to reading this and overall was underwhelmed. The final story of the mailman was touching, but otherwise the stories are kind of cute but feel rather pointless. Illustrations are cute. I could see this in a vet's office waiting room but can't imagine buying it for anyone.

Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honesty review.

"I think it was selfish. To keep Sebastian to myself during the movie. So I passed him around. And let everyone get their share of cuddles."

Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel for providing me with an e-arc.

As an wholesome collection exploring a dog and their fren Sebastian on lil adventures they navigate through in life, 'Thoughts of Dog' is bound to leave you with a huge smile and tears stains all around you and over you because this book is going to make you cry. Halfway into the book and this book made me dirty sob because that's just how emotional that part was. I wanted to scream, "Who gave you the right to do this to me?" Someone else said in their review that we don't deserve dogs and they are absolutely right.

I don't even have to suggest this to anyone. If you already haven't picked this on your own, what even is the point? This book comes with the most adorable illustrations with wholesome thoughts of a dog, like what valid reason do you have to not read this? This book is so damn precious and it must be treated as such. Periodt.

I have been obsessed with the We Rate Dogs and Thoughts of Dog Twitter accounts pretty much since their inception. I think for a while there my parents thought I knew Matt because of how much I would talk about Matt from Dog Rates. I was beyond thrilled to find Thoughts of Dog the book as an instant download on NetGalley.

This book is literally the best of the Thoughts of Dog Twitter account with darling illustrations. The book follows Dog and their Stuffed Fren Sebastian on their various adventures throughout the year. I’m not going to lie, I teared up reading the 4th of July and Mailman sections. My favorite section was probably the Halloween section I loved the children being referred to as “tiny monsters.” I just need this book to be like 50,000 pages long.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received an advance copy of Thoughts of Dog, by Matt Nelson. This is such a pure and innocent take, on what dogs think about. It so cute. From going to the beach, building snowmen, and dealing with fireworks, this is a truly enjoyable book.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

I follow and love this Twitter account, so I HAD to read the book! It's very adorable, just like you'd expect if you're at all familiar with the Twitter account. The illustrations are charming and I love the POV from the dog and his stuffed friend.

A very, very cute book! (I do wish there was a more adult version, with some of the humor from the Twitter account. Hopefully there will be more Thoughts of Dogs!)

I knew nothing about the author or the origin of this story before I decided to read this, and it was a pleasant surprise. But, so you know, this is by the creator of both Thoughts of Dog and WeRateDogs on Twitter, and he has a lot of followers.

There’s much about Dog’s best stuffed fren sebastian, and the human with frequent mentions of the goings on, when the human has another human fren come to visit, and they all cuddle on the couch, Dog, his fren sebastian, human and human fren, watching a movie.

"according to the transitive property of cuddles. the human’s fren is also cuddling sebastian"

When the human heads off to work, Dog offers to allow the human to take sebastian with him to work for the day, and spends the day waiting for their return, including his many naps and thoughts.

There’s a trip to the Beach with adventures in the water and digging up the sand, collecting seashells and scaring away the birds.

4th of July and the associated 'sky booms' in the sky are followed by the sentiment that those 'sky booms' that occur outside of this day should never be tolerated – which I’m sure my dogs would happily vote in agreement.

Halloween is covered, as well as Car Rides, and of course one on the obligatory mailman, whom Dog looks forward to seeing since he knows that the mailman was the one who brought Sebastian to him. This friendship develops, and is very touching, especially as the story nears the end.

Loved that in his Acknowledgments, the author starts by thanking his two beautiful golden retrievers, saying "I simply interpret their perfection."

Halle and Story gave this five stars, whereas Paisley gave it one star, begrudgingly, because, well, no cats.

This most sweetly illustrated title tells about the daily life of a dog (who seems much like a toddler), his “fren,” who is a stuffed elephant and their human. There are some adventures at home as well as in the wider world. There are movie nights, trips to the beach, a special sharing of the elephant on a bad day and more. Readers will also be delighted to share holidays including July 4th and Halloween with this appealing dog friend.

Readers who are looking for a quick escape will enjoy spending time in the pretty good world of dog and his friends.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

This was a feel good book about the everyday adventures of a good dog. At first the timing of the periods was a bit jarring, but once I got used to them, this turned into a quick, delightful little read that I would love to revisit. Five stars!

I received this book from the publisher via netgalley.

I'm not very active on Twitter, but through the power of the internet I am at least aware of WeRateDogs. This book was very cute and very short--definitely seems to be designed as a stocking stuffer or Easter basket gift rather than something you buy on it's own.

Overall I liked the booklet, but think more effort/content could have been put forward.

Unfortunately, I can't open the file in Adobe Digital Editions - I've tried everything! It's unfortunate, because I love "Thoughts of Dog".

Two of my all-time favorite Twitter accounts are @dog_feelings and @dog_rates. There’s nothing better than getting a creative glimpse into a dog’s brain or seeing user-submitted doggos receive 15/10 for wearing costumes and being the “goodest” boys and girls in their everyday lives. The mastermind behind all of this is Matt Nelson, whose new book, Thoughts of Dog releases Tuesday, October 27th, 2020.

From the Back Cover
“Join a dog and their stuffed ‘fren’ [S]ebastian as they navigate life’s adventures through the most wholesome lens imaginable.”

Review
If you want to smile for a book's entirety, this is the book for you. Thoughts of Dog is a quick read and would be make a great coffee table book for a dog lover (or anyone who enjoys cute things). It reads like a well-read dog's prose poetry, with spellings of "fren" and lowercase "i's," as a cherry on top of the puppy vernacular.

The book is structured in delightful vignettes in which our hero, who I shall call Dog, goes on adventures with his favorite toy, an elephant named Sebastian. I don't want to spoil all of the fun, so here are a few of my favorites: "4th of July," "Halloween," and "Mailman."

Albeit one of the most obvious topics to cover is the 4th of July when speaking about what is going on in a dog's mind, Nelson does this with immense heart and eloquence. Dog and his human go to a shelter during the holiday to comfort dogs who are frightened by the fireworks. Dog sweetly allows Sebastian to stay with Oreo, a shelter dog, because Dog believes Sebastian is more in need there. These sentiments fill the text and remind me of the intelligent things dogs do when they know a person or another animal is hurting. Dog's thought process in this vignette, as well of the others, is reminiscent of the thought process I imagine for my mom's dog Charlie. She is an incredibly sweet dog with an advanced emotional intelligence, just like Dog.

Sebastian is just as much the center of attention as Dog. The further you read, the more it feels like a delightful buddy comedy. The stuffed toy may not be able to move on his own, but he has just as much personality as Dog. I love the simple art style throughout, and the above image reminds me of when someone explains something very complicated to me, and I just nod my head. Seeing the humanity come through kept me fully engaged.

The story that left the most lasting impact on me was that of the mailman. I was almost in tears. Dog attempts to navigate his experiences with a new mailman and it is discovered through a picture in the mail truck and the gift of an old toy, that the mailman's dog has passed away. If you have ever lost a dog this will truly speak to you. This is part of the true mastery that is this book, where understanding the human experience through a dog's eyes is deeply profound. Dog puts together the evidence and is a compassionate soul and source of comfort for the grieving mailman. I'm almost sobbing as I write this!

I highly recommend this book for adults and children alike that need a little joy in their lives. It is a great illustration (pun fully intended) for children to broaden their creativity and understand why dogs do what they do. Also, if your child wants a dog (or if you do) and can't have one, buy this book instead. Trust me. It'll tide you over until you get your goodest boy or girl.

Verdict: 5/5

This is so cute and adorable! I really loved reading picture books like this from the perspective of animals. Dog is so fluffy and an angel. I never expected to cry while reading this, but Dog is just so pure I just can't stop the tears from flowing. I will totally re-read this over and over again whenever I feel sad or down. I loved this!

Honestly this is the cutest thing ever. Thoughts of Dog is one of my favorite twitter accounts (right along We Rate Dogs!) and I love seeing their posts because they make me think of my dogs. Getting to see the dog and Sebastien drawn out was so much fun. I can definitely see picking up a copy of this book to flip through whenever I need a pick me up.
