I picked this title because I get the “what are you?” question often. It’s so aggravating. However, this book was not my favorite even though the topic should interest me! It felt not cohesive enough maybe.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to reading Mixed Blessing. I have many takeaways from various sections. I struggled reading it at times and there were some places I had to force myself to stick with the narrative. I hope this book will be helpful in allowing others to be aware of what someone experiences in various contexts with a multi-ethnic background.

The introductory parallels to Christianity were very reaching and almost cheesy, thus off-putting I believe even for a spiritual reader. Perhaps this book could be helpful for someone who have never read about mixed identity, but it misses the mark in making more complex connections between religion, spirituality and multiracial identity. I appreciated the opportunity to read it and hope it reaches someone.

I struggled mightily with this book. I consider myself to be a student of race an ethnicity, reason for which this book appealed to me. However, the religious (Christian) slant of this book was a complete turnoff. I could not get past the first 3rd of the book. It should be made very clear to the prospective reader that this book is more about religion than anything else..
