This book makes reference to 75 historical sites, many with an unexplained or uncertain past. The sites are referenced on a map of the British Isles and there is a time line to help with the chronology. The oldest thing mentioned is 33,000 years old and the youngest is from 1916. Each site is explained and has plenty of great photographs to illustrate them. There are some wonderful things, many I had not heard of. The Rollright Witch was of particular interest as I have visited the Rollright Stones but did not know about the witch. Thank you to Net Galley for anarchy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a gorgeous book with its vibrant pictures. I think the readership of this book would be pretty limited, but it would be a great coffee table book for people interested in Britain or history.

This is an interesting travel guide through archaeological in Britain. The text is well written and informative. There are lots of wonderful illustrations. I learned a lot about early British History reading this book. I enjoyed my arm chair travels.

Interesting book, with fascinating facts and delving into history with you right along. Did find it a little tricky to navigate as the many pictures made for cumbersome progression on my e-reader (kept blocking throughout)

I really enjoyed this informative book! I am a huge fan of books about Britain, so I actually found this book after searching for reads about Britain within NetGalley.

This book is about the secret, uncovered or unexplained history in Britain, of which there is quite literally hundreds of years' worth! The strength of this publication is in its theme, research, and high-quality photos.

I was actually surprised that it had such great photos inside. I thought it was going to be more of a traditional non-fiction with more text than imagery. I am impressed with the amount of research that went into this book, as well. There were some places that I had actually never come across despite reading a lot about Britain. So, really, I think this book was successful in its research aims.

Another strength of this book is in its accessibility. You do not have to be a history buff to get something from reading this. You just need to be curious and interested.

Great for those who like archeology or shows that revolve around stuff like this. Shows things found like skeletons, vessels, carvings, and more. One to three pages per item.

Sadly, I was unable to download this book in time before it was archived and this I was not able to either read or review it. My apologies.

A great way to travel, archaeology style, from the comfort of your own house. I liked the way the author makes you think about things in a different way. There is so much past hidden beneath our feet, it really helps to make a person think about what could be there. This book shows discoveries and details in Britain, but the concept could work even in your own area. Not every thing has to be huge temples and obvious ruins. Highly recommend this book and author. Definitely will take a copy along if I ever go across the pond.

This was such a fun read! However, it is very specific only for those really interested in history and ancient relics and mysteries of the past - the text is not trying to appeal to everyone and I really appreciated that.

Personally I enjoyed this book tremendously (and, yes, it talks about Stonehenge too - I spent a lot of time wondering if it will mention it or not). The pictures in it were great too.

Where my ancient British history nerds at? You want this book- it tells of ancient British artifacts, sites, treasures, and more, with tons of photos to illustrate what's being talked about. The locations are arranged geographically, starting in the North and working around clockwise to come back around to the top again, with a handy map at the beginning with all the locations marked, plus a timeline to help us pin down when things took place. The text is written in an engaging way, that relays the information in a way that's fun and interesting without feeling dry. A great book to snuggle up with on a cold afternoon!

I had never really considered how little I know about Britain's history but now it's all I can think about. I even have a list of places close enough to me that I can day trip to them,
This book is packed full of information and images and even includes a location map, which I hope will be fold-out in the physical copy.

Having studied archaeology, I found this book extremely interesting. It was well written, with lots of useful time lines. I loved how it focusing on one place a d goes through the history so there is something for everyone!

A beautiful book - but I was sent a version for my phone which was essentially a PDF, which meant it was incredibly hard to read without zooming in for every paragraph and moving back and forth. Happy to properly review with a print copy, but it wasn't really possible on my phone.

What a total joy this Book has been to read, increasing my knowledge about many of our ancient sites & artifacts . When ever we've been out walking deep in our stunning Countryside we've always wondered what secrets to our Past may lie beneath our feet. The Photographs & illustrations add to the beauty & fascination of this book, so for anyone who is interested in our ancient history will enjoy this beautiful book.,which has a been a reading highlight during my eleventh month of medical shielding & Lock Down, so I want to say a huge Thank You to it's author Mary-Ann Ochota.

I really enjoyed reading this book - the use of images was really good. I often find with books like this that they can be too simplistic, or not read very well, but this one was excellently written. I would have liked more information about some of the sites/finds, but I suppose that's what the internet is for! The balance of images and text was well designed, and I feel like it would make an excellent gift for someone who is interested in history and archaeology.

This book is full of amazing history. There are plenty of clear and well written descriptions and many fantastic photographs too. A variety of archeological sites are explored and explained in a non technical yet very engaging way. Many books of this nature would be dry and boring - this is far from that! The manner in which the content has been set out with attention to timeline and location takes the reader on a brilliant journey of discovery, I found myself drawn in and very interested in each chapter. I imagine this book will appeal to a hugely wide variety of readers; from the educational angle, to using it as a guide book for travel and for everything in between. There is definitely something for everyone inside these very informative pages.

Secret Britain is a wonderful guide to (mostly) unknown sites in Britain - perfect for the traveler looking for historic sites.

A number of archaeology books are either rush jobs with little merit or more likely, so dense they feel as though they were written for a PhD thesis. Neither versions contain photos. All of that said, Secret Britain fits neither description and contains lots of high-quality photos.

Instead of reading about archaeological finds from thousands of years ago and wondering what the hell the author is talking about, Ochota writes in perfectly clear, understandable terms and offers photographic evidence.

Ochota discusses the Aberlemno Pictish Stones by giving a thorough background of the Pictish people of northeastern Scotland. She also gives a clear description with all of the details of the stones. Additionally, she shows the stones, as well as other Pictish artwork.

Ochota’s descriptions of the artwork would be incomplete without the photographs. With the photos and descriptions, the reader walks away with a clear understanding of the subject, as well as a detailed knowledge that explains the artwork better with background history.

There are plenty of examples, too. In all, Secret Britain contains 75 archaeological sites and the book contains a map to help those who wish to visit these sites or even just to give a better geographical picture. Ochota, who stars on the tv show Mystic Britain, finds a good balance between academic (she graduated from Cambridge) and popular (comparing archaeology to a “fairground hall of mirrors.”). Ordinarily, I approach archaeology books with caution, but Secret Britain finds a great balance—visually arresting, informative and interesting.
