I was initially drawn to this book because of its absolutely stunning cover art.

This is a wonderful bedtime story, it is beautifully written and very melodic. The illustrations in this little book are also stunning. I have enjoyed reading this book over and over with my Littles at bedtime.

As always, thank you to the publisher and netgalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review

'The Night Is Deep and Wide' by Gillian Sze with illustrations by Sue Todd is a picture book about a quiet world going to sleep.

In a gentle read-aloud, the reader watches as the tulips close one by one. Creatures settle down for the night and the world begins to hush.

It's a lovely quiet book with beautiful illustrations. It's just the kind of thing to soothe a sleepy child right off to sleep.

3 stars. The art is beautiful, but there isn't a story here in my opinion. Review to come.

Due to being a high school English teacher, I am often behind on writing reviews. Here is a summary of my initial thoughts.

The illustrations are excellently done. It is lyrical, and I would recommend this book. It is a sweet book. I cant wait to read this to my niece when she gets older. This book is in stores now for $10.95 (USD). This book is adorable.

Lull your little one to sleep with this atmospheric, calm bedtime story. Mostly black and white illustration with pops of red, it’s full of flowers and night scenes and gentle poetry. I read it before bedtime, and uh, it put me right on to sleep, haha.

Poet Gillian Sze uses Italian villanelle verse to create a melodic cadence perfect for calming down. From the publisher, “A young child comes in from picking flowers as the creatures around their home all settle down for the evening. Songbirds curl against their mothers’ sides, the house slumps and sighs low, a hush settles as times slows. And little readers are invited to rest their heads and be soothed to sleep as moonlight falls on eyes that close.”

I really enjoyed it and might be revisiting on nights when I’m having trouble winding down. Hope you and your little one will love it, too.

**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**

Excellent illustrations. I wasn't a huge fan of the rhyming scheme, but overall it's a nice book, and the illustrations alone bring it up an extra star!

The sing-song-ish rhyme of the text meshes well with the bold lino-cut artwork, forming soothing images for the mind and eyes. The repeating themes of settling down for the night will help little ones settle down as well. A good baby gift that is different from the usual fare!

The Night is Deep and Wide is a lovely pairing of pictures and words. I loved the poetic style of the book, and the art is eye-catching and unique. A highly recommended read to share with others -- young and old. I would gladly reread this text in a classroom or just to enjoy its beauty on my own.

Using rhythmical notes and a soft, gentle cadence settle a child in for the night. Luscious illustrations enhance the lullaby experience.

This is a beautifully illustrated board book that would be perfect for bedtime reading. The poem is in the form of a villanelle, and the repetitive lines add a certain lullaby quality to the book that even almost made me drowsy just reading it. I loved the pops of color in the illustrations. I think they really helped the book as a whole to come to life.

What a beautiful book! The cover, the illustrations, and the words all create a peaceful, soothing book for cuddling before bedtime.
The rhythm of some of the lines of poetry didn't work for me as I read it aloud, however. It started smoothly, but then the back and forth lulling was interrupted. If I were reading to a child, I would go off-page for those lines, making up something that had the right number of syllables or simply talking calmly about the illustrations.

Still, this book is worth having for the illustrations and the peaceful simplicity of the words.

This high-contrast picture book is soothing and gentle, and even though the poetic text is fairly repetitive, the book repeats itself in a way that is reassuring and sleep-inducing. This is the kind of picture book that a parent and child can enjoy together instead of it just being for one or the other, and parents who are put off by saccharine, emotional books about bedtime may particularly appreciate this book's simple and natural approach.

The Night is Deep and Wide is a stunning picture book for your little ones or for anyone who'd like a bit of poetry to soothe their weathered minds. The art style is beautifully done, so poignant (black and white with a few bursts of color per page) and the poetry is repetitive and rhythmic.

I’m torn on this book. I love the cover and the illustrations. They are calming, soothing and Fit perfectly for a book for children about going to sleep. The thing that’s a little tough for me is the rhythm of the words. At first it felt like a typical rhyming book, but it doesn’t follow that pattern. I had a hard time reading it the first time through, but it did get easier after a few rereads. Otherwise, my daughter loved finding the animals in the pictures, the stars that were the only color on some pages, and the change of color towards the end when the tulips were red. It’s a sweet story!

What a cute, calming story. Not only are the illustrations stunning, but the lyrical nature of the text is soothing. I would read this text over and over again, even without a child. Although I would not necessarily use this book in my curriculum (I teach middle and high school), I think I could also work as a mentor text in rhyme scheme or the style of an Italian villanelle.

The Night is Deep and Wide is a beautiful poem with gorgeous illustrations.

This book felt so elegant. I really liked sinking away into for the day. It's sweet, repetitive and easy to read. I can see children and adults loving this book. The simplistic nature with the black and white pictures (with a splash of colour!) really make this book stand out. This could easily be a sweet poem before bedtime.

Three out of five stars.

I loved loved loved the beautiful illustrations in this book. They reminded me of The House in the Night.

The text was simple and soothing and repetitive, and for those reasons this will be an excellent bedtime story. This is definitely one I will pick up.

"The Night is Deep and Wide" by Gillian Sze and illustrated by Sue Todd is a rhythmical story about nightfall and the serenity that comes just before sleep. This story is a short but sweet and young readers will enjoy listening to this book aloud. The illustrations were mostly black and white with little shouts of color every so often. I loved this concept as it really stands out from other children's books. Most kids stories are filled with bright colors and high energy. In contrast, this book was relaxing to look at and really helped to put my young kids into their "bedtime mindset."
