Unfortunately, I’m going to have to agree with the majority consensus that it was a “mixed bag”. It was interesting, because the stories that I anticipated I would like from certain authors, I didn’t connect as well with. Of course, with short stories you can’t execute full character development, nor reach an adequate arc, so that’s what I’m writing them off as, unfinished. Ha. I did love the inclusivity of so many genders or identities. But ALSO, pardon my frankness, but this wasn’t THAT kinky. I kind of expected an anthology of queer literary legends to kind of REALLY push it. And it kind of fell flat for me. Maybe that’s my bad. Having that predisposition going into it. But it was still entertaining and thrilling!
While this was a quick read, it wasn't my cup of tea. Perhaps my expectations were too high but I found myself skimming and skipping pages more than being hooked or drawn in.
I had high expectations for this book and that might have let me down a little. I was excited to read because I love writers like Brandon Taylor and Alexander Chee. I was also excited to read from new and upcoming writers on a subject that I don't know much about, but was interested in broadening my horizons. I think I'm not the key target market for this book because a lot of the writing made me quite uncomfortable. Some essays are definitely stronger than others, and sometimes I didn't find the writing altogether to be cohesive enough.
Really great short stories that explore sexual realm. They vary in depth and subject matter but extremely captivating to read.
I received this book complimentary from NetGalley but all opinions are my own.
This was overall great. Definitely very kinky and erotic. Some of the stories were not to my taste but overall a great collection of essays on kink. I added some authors to my follow list due to how much I enjoyed their writing styles.
Not as steamy as I thought it would be. I liked the idea of several different short stories all rolled into one. Kept my interest long enough.
Just wasn’t my cup of tea.. I’m sure others will absolutely love this book because it is well written. It’s just not what I really thought it would be. I still thank netgalley for giving me the chance to review this book
I didn’t love this collection of short erotic stories. It fell flat for me and most I was just skimming to get through. If you’re looking for something dark and erotic and fast paced then this might work for you.
A fun and bracing collection of essays. Ordered another copy of the book when it was published and have been giving it as a gift. I appreciate the diversity of perspectives in this volume.
Interesting collection of different perspectives that should be considered as a historical snapshot in time. Will be coming back to this one!
#Kink is a short stories collection by many authors. Which is nice because it introduced me to many authors I otherwise would not heard of. It has a very large variety. Highlights include stories by #Roxane Gay, #Carmen Maria Machado, and # Alexander Chee.
Thank you for the advance copy,
#Netgalley and # Simon & Schuster
This was so disappointing, and a reminder of why I do not read literary fiction. This was not always about kink. WAY too many of the stories were about abuse and lacked consent. It wasn't sexy, it was gross. Such a disappointment.
I got about a third of the way through this before I decided not to finish. I expect that in an anthology I won’t connect with every single story, but I just wasn’t feeling any of them. It’s not necessarily that they were bad, they just weren’t for me. For a collection called “Kink” I was definitely hoping for a lot more.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is probably my fault, but I didn't realize going into this book that it was going to be short *stories* with kink in them. And that's fine, but it wasn't what I was looking for - I thought it was going to be essays about kink. The stories were fine, but I ended up DNF'ing it - I got maybe halfway through and decided I didn't care to finish it.
This author list is jam=packed with good names, but it just doesn't hold up. The stories are earnest and organic, but I wasn't moved in any way. With a title like, "Kink," I expected to feel something. anything.
Dnf because this is trash. I made it through the first story but then the quote below was used in the second story and I just can't.
"I had just gotten out of a relationship with a closeted man so frustratingly asexual in its nature, and so tortured, I was a bit like a man on a fast who didn’t know how to start eating again."
I get that this an anthology and I could just skip this particular story and move to the next in the book, but the sheer fact that the author of this story AND both editors thought this line was appropriate in unacceptable. Asexuality isn't a punchline or a joke and it sure as hell isn't an insult. These authors should know and understand the power of words and to allow this sentence in speaks volumes of their attitude towards asexuality and asexuals and as an asexual, I'm not about to consume anything they produce. Fuck that and fuck them.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. This is fast paced and extremely steamy, it will keep you blushing throughout the whole book. It is written by multiple authors. This is in stores for $17.99 (USD). I would recommend this extremely steamy book to anyone and everyone.
I love a short story collection because it introduces me to authors I would have otherwise not heard of, and gets me excited to read from some of my favorites in a different format. No collection is perfect but there are some great stories here!
Like most anthologies, Kink definitely had some stories that were better than others. Although I really enjoyed Roxane Gay's and Carmen Maria Machado's stories, the rest of the book didn't really seem to hold up as well.
This book covers all manner of kink, although sometimes in a wordy way. It was interesting to compare the "literary" depictions here with the writing that I usually enjoy. With a wide variety and mix of stories, this compilation includes something for everyone.
