I enjoyed this book! Within the first few pages you realise there are lots of secrets to be uncovered and wonder whether all is what it seems. You begin by reading about the mother in the story- Deborah. I found I read Deborah's chapters (Part 1) slower than Sibley's (her daughter) as I prefer books written in first person as Sibley's chapters are. Part 2 picked up the pace of the storyline and that's when I really began enjoying the book. Towards the end, twists and turns were at the forefront although all my theories were wrong! I actually gasped at the revelation at the end! In saying this, I felt the last 50 pages or so seemed rushed as it seemed to miss chunks of time. Unfortunately I can't go into it more than that without giving spoilers. 4 stars from me.

I’m used to stories told by different narrators but this one was a bit difficult to keep track of. And I did not like that there were still mysteries to solve even after the epilogue. What happened to Soren?? But if you stick with the story to midways, you’ll have to keep on because by then you’re invested & want to know what happens next, as one does with any good mystery. This is a solid 3 stars, almost 4, but it was a rough start for me. Not one of Ms Montgomery’s best, she has some fabulous ones out there.

I really liked the ending of this book - it was surprising, psychological, and new. Singing all of its praises, the journey to get to the resolution was a bit tough and long for me. In some places it dragged on and I found myself wondering what value this had in the full plot. Sibley, the daughter and one of the main characters, wasn’t very likable so I didn’t root for her as much as I wanted to going in. Again, I was very pleased with the ending, but just be ready to hang in through some choppy dialogue and long-winded background.

Thank You to the Author and to Netgalley for sharing an ARC with me in exchange for my honest review.
Honestly, I loved this book. I have been in a huge reading slump lately but this book was just everything. It had a good writing, story, amazing characters.
The setting of this book was so intriguing and added to the entire story so much. I absolutely loved how the book ended and it was quite satisfying. Though I was sad it ended. Overall, the twists and the story kept me on the edge of my seat.

I love a book with a lot of twists and turns and this one was loaded with them.

I also love a book where you suspect every person at some point in the book which I did. Great, great read that I was thrilled to read and review. I will definitely be looking for additional books by this author!

Thank you to the author and netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to read this story!

Overall, I think there was a lot of creativity and a lot of twists in the book. It had good bones. The execution of the intricacies and twists were a little tough for me. There were certain points that, in my view as a therapist, were slightly unrealistic. Additionally, the two narrators are also both very highly unreliable, making some of the story get a little lost. I’m definitely up for an unreliable narrator, but I think maybe I needed a bit more concreteness. I also felt that the majority of the resolutions came in the last 20-30 pages, and there was a LOT to resolve, so it felt like a lot at once. Overall, like I said, definitely a creative and twisty story but certain things were not quite my style. Thank you to the author and netgalley for allowing me to read this advanced copy e-book!

The Imposter by Marin Montgomery was a solid read. I enjoy books set in the present and the past. The character development and storyline kept me interested throughout the entire book. Both main characters were unreliable, and it was unsettling – this is a great feeling for a psychological thriller! The twists were good and unforeseen. I will check out other books written by this aauthor.

***** I received an ARC from NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my honest review. *****

This book is a little confusing from the start, as the summary shows that Sibley is the main character, yet it opens with an extended section about her mother, Deborah. I wonder if that was the idea, to put you off kilter from the start. It's essentially a story about coming to terms with the past and long held beliefs that aren't as accurate as they were always believed to be. Sibley has returned to her Midwest family home in lieu of the rehab she was supposed to check into as a term of her suspension at work. She's a functioning alcoholic in denial who is given too many chances and her marriage is as up in the air as her career.

Nevertheless, she decides on coming home and surprising her mother, who is much more on edge and anxious than Sibley remembers. Deborah was the victim of a home attack and now hardly ever leaves, and has let the farm fall into disrepair. She's seeing a therapist and is on a lot of medication which she believes will help overcome her fragile mental health. She and Sibley communicate awkwardly and their interactions are short and stunted. Sibley thinks Deborah is in a terrible state yet is determined to have her explain events from the past that Sibley believes framed their entire future. It's the typical 'leave the past in the past' vs. ' I have a right to know' scenario. There's a lot of miscommunication and missed opportunities to just open up and let the secrets spill. The final resolution is satisfying, yet feels a long time coming.

It's a good story about the perseverance of family overcoming the consequences of the choices made in both the past and present. Anyone who reads it is sure to relate to one part or another, leading to their own reflection on life and love..

Thak you NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm not sure what I really expected here and going in cold was a bonus. I enjoyed the twists and while some were predictable, others were not.

I have read other Marin Montgomery books! I was eager to get my hands on this because everyone knows how much I LOVE an unreliable narrator... esp when I start to question my own sanity only to be thrown for another loop! What a hot mess! I loved it!

Deborah lives alone on her family farm after her husband died suspiciously 16 years ago and her daughter Sibely left shortly after. Deborah is dating her neighbor but also appears to be losing her grip with reality; seeing people who aren’t there, thinking she got pushed down the stairs, bouts of mania and depression.
Sibley is a divorce lawyer whose marriage and career are on the line due to her drinking. She is put on leave from her job to go to rehab and her husband thinks she cheated on him. She agrees to go to rehab but instead returns to her hometown to reconcile with her mother.
Not much happens within the story as both characters struggle with reality and seem to alternate levels of consciousness as the story goes on. The story is mostly a list of revealed secrets from the past leading up to what is causing Deborah's state of mind. The reader is unsure of how much they can trust either narrator (Sibely or Deborah) as neither character seems to be able to distinguish between reality and hallucination.

Twist and turns galore!
This is a book that has a lot going on in it. The story starts out with Deborah. She begins hearing banging on her front door so when she goes to the door with the gun she ends up slipping on the ice but then someone kicks her in the head and she becomes unconscious.
Thousands miles away her daughter Sibley, a really successful amazing divorce attorney, ends up getting suspended at her firm and her husband is completely convinced that she is having an affair. So, during her difficult time Sibley decides that she wants to try to mend her relationship with Deborah. So once she returns to the small town she realizes fairly quickly that her mother wasn't the woman she had known. Then, the real twist, turns, secrets and history come back to haunt them both.
I really enjoyed this story. The plot and storyline were great, the pace was great and I was definitely hooked. I had to know what happened!!! I will definitely look for more from this author but I did enjoy this book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who really enjoys domestic thrillers or thrillers that involves family history and broken families!

This book defines the term “unreliable narrator”. By the end, my head was spinning and I had no idea whom to trust. The twists and turns were there and it definitely kept me guessing but I didn’t connect with either of the main characters because of my mistrust of their intentions and true backstory. Not a win for me. 2.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I thought The Imposter was a great read! There's a lot of back and forth which got confusing at times - I found that I had to re-read some of the sections. Quick paced and it will keep you guessing. If you like a good twisty, psychological thriller, I would recommend this book..

I thought The Imposter was a great read! Interesting plot, quick paced and it will keep you guessing until the end. I will say that there is a lot of back and forth which got confusing at times - I found that I had to re-read some of the sections to have a better understanding. But nonetheless, if you like a good twisty, psychological thriller, I would recommend this book.

Marin Montgomery is a new author to me but I'm happy to have discovered her. I'm looking forward to checking out her other books.

Thank you, NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and Marin Montgomery for giving me the opportunity to read the book in exchange for my honest review.

This book did a great job of keeping me guessing. It was hard to tell who the good guys vs the bad guys were. Just when I thought I had it figured out there was a twist.
I really like the way the story went from present day to the past. Its interesting learning what shaped the characters into the people they are.
There were a lot of things going on in this story and I have to say sometimes it was too much. And the ending reminded me of a Charlie Chan or Scooby Doo show where at the end they are all in a room and the detective goes around the room telling everyone what happened and who did it.
Overall this was a really good book and I do recommend it!
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I loved this very much! The characters, the actions and even the plot itself! Very inspiring for my own book too!

The Imposter by Marin Montgomery is a page-turning psychological thriller. It is centered on Deborah, and her estranged daughter Sibley, both living with their own demons from the past. When Sibley returns home to try to face her troubles and reunite with her mother, they both find it difficult to trust the other, especially as odd things keep happening around them and it begins difficult to tell who is being honest. This book really got in my head and I had plenty of moments of questioning myself - what is real? Who is telling the truth? The author did a good job of setting up the plot twists, and I appreciated that with any good thriller, there were surprises. The one thing that held this book back a little bit for me was that I found it really difficult to root for either of the main characters, Sibley & her mother Deborah. They are both flawed people (arent we all) but more than that they werent particularly likeable. Even so, I couldnt put this book down and still found myself needing to know how their story turned out. I definitely recommend this book for fans of psychological thrillers.
