What's Your Story is a journal that focuses on prompting transformation in your life. Every aspect is rewritten as you write down what you wish your life looks or how you want to be and how you're currently dealing with that aspect. By introducting many questions the authors are pushing you towards subjects you can think about and maybe makes you question parts of life you didn't before.

The idea of the journal is great, but there are also already quite of lot of them. I didn't see how this would have any added value for me as I already journal in a blank notebook using mostly prompts that are already in my head so they worry me or keep my mind occupied.

The lay-out of the journal is that you get a giant mountain of questions, after which you can write down your thoughts or ideas. In between those mountains of questions there's not a lot more. I would've preferred a nice introduction to the subject where possible aspects of the theme could be discussed, so it triggers your brain into thinking about these without them being forced onto you. The large amount of questions felt like too much. Is see journalling as a calming experience and this didn't give me that.

On the other hand you can see it as a standard journal, but with some guidance in questions you can use. Not too much explanation, just you that has to figure it out. It's a personal preference on whether you like this way of journalling or if you like some more guidance.

Overall this journal could be a good way for beginners to get a start in putting their thoughts on paper. It can be a little daunting to start journalling as many don't know what to write down. This journal gives a lot of prompts to work with. If you're already used to journalling and have done it for some time, this might not be the right journal for you.

I could not get this to load correctly whatsoever on my devices because it is very image heavy, but from what I did see it was gorgeous. I will be buying the physical version to use as I really liked the exercises and graphics.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the opportunity to try this journal out, and thanks as well to the publisher!

A gorgeous journal!

Did not translate well for use digitally. However, I ordered a copy from my local Black-owned bookstore and it was gorgeous and insightful. I’m still taking my time working my way through it! However, it’s beautiful and the questions are powerful and deep. I had to sit and think about the things, people, places and experiences that led me to who I am now.

I plan on buying this for others.

What's your story is one of the best journal companions. Every entry is set to open the mind and spirit. The book is wonderful for meditation and let one's mind contemplate about life and the journey ahead. I felt so much peace writing along while reading this book. Definitely recommend it to others that are looking for a way to reconnect with one self.

What’s Your Story promises to provoke self-enquiry by asking the ‘right’ questions, ones that will “push you beyond who you are right now”, hard questions that will ultimately help you transform your life. I mean, it sounds good – but… is it?

I don’t think this book was exactly what I was expecting, to be honest. I really liked the idea that you could examine your past, ‘rewrite’ or rather reframe how you tell yourself the story of your life, and in doing so break free of old patterns that aren’t serving you any more. That’s how the intro phrases it. But to be honest, I got to the end feeling more bemused than helped.

The topics covered include creativity, self-care, activism, spirituality, and grief/healing. The method is basically ‘here is a question – go journal’. Now admittedly, my journaling maybe wasn’t up to scratch (ahem), but that’s the problem with self-help books: the work, the result, all has to come from you. Yes, a good book can help you get there, but alas this one just didn’t click with me at all.

“Use these pages to tell your own story of awakening” – urm, what? “What is your first memory?” and “When was the first time you were able to accomplish a goal?” – zero clue, sorry. I can barely remember last month, never mind (cough cough) decades ago – and then “Did you build on that experience?” I mean, are we talking about my 2 year old self grabbing a cookie, how much sense does this even make?. And then there’s “Make a list of things that give you total joy” – right. Urm, yeah, no, I can give you a list of things that I sort of like more than others, but ‘total joy’? C’mon!

Overall, just not for me. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, and it will most likely work for other people, but while I very often quite like self-help books this one was closer to irritating me than helping me feel in any way enlightened or better off.

A beautiful journal to help you dig deep, with questions that are simple enough to think on, but profound enough to make you think. Not like many of the journaling prompts that barely scratch the surface of wanting to dig deep into yourself. Good enough to use as an e-book in your own journal, or a physical copy with pages to write on. Many thought-provoking questions.

For me, the best journals are the ones that as the kinds of questions that seem simple and yet are subtle in their profoundness. Rebecca Walker & Lily Diamond have designed exactly such a journal that asks you questions to help you on your discovery journey.

The prompts follow a day from waking up to twilight and letting go and there are five tracks: creativity & self-expression, self-Care, activism, spirituality, grief, loss, and the work of healing. The prompts are designed such that you can follow one track all the way through the book if that's what you prefer.

the simplest journaling books can sometimes be the most powerful ones. This beautifully designed book is sure to be gold for those of us who like to take time and look within.

with gratitude to sounds true and netgalley for an advanced copy in return for an honest review

When Rebecca Walker and Lily Diamond wrote that they spend the better part of a decade crafting this guided journal, I wholeheartedly believed them when it came to reviewing the pages in this journal. Filled with questions that are carefully crafted to help you cultivate a better story about yourself; I believe you will come to a more authentic version of you.

Whimsical pages and and inviting atmosphere is what you'll find in this journal. I've never been more excited to start a new story about my life, my values, and my beliefs.

All I can say is thank you for taking the time to write these prompts!

I gave it 4/5 stars as I prefer a more traditional guided journal and prompt layout. Whimsical is fun and writing about your life shouldn't be too serious, however for those working on real issues in their life - some pages that are deep in color. and random "artwork" may distract you from your thoughts rather than inspire them.

How frustrating is it to be told by all the different sources the things you must do to be successful in life? This book definitely does NOT do that. It instead takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was received as an ARC from Sounds True in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book could not have come at a better time. I have read many journals and self-help books and I especially love when the author gives the reader an opportunity to apply what they have just read into their own personal lives. Knowing your power to live your best life and that you deserve your best life is so powerful that it changes so many people's lives mentally and we all need that during this difficult time. The colors and outline used in this book was very eye-catching and straight forward that I an in high anticipation of the release for this book so I could do some of these exercises. I know this will benefit my whole life.

We will consider adding this title to our Self Help Collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

A gorgeous and thought-provoking book that seeks to reassure us that our thoughts, our goals, our histories and our self-definitions can be roadmaps propelling us forward rather than holding us back. In a journal-like format, the book provides writing prompts that allow us to really dig beneath the surface of our thoughts. These prompts are often quite therapeutic and educational. Through the process of exploratory writing, we are able to understand a little bit more about key belief systems and to recognise that despite our teachings and our upbringings and any other experiences we may have had, there is a creative soul there to be cultivated. There are uplifting and healing quotes throughout, as well. The combination of ideas from Lily Diamond and Rebecca Walker blend beautifully. A fantastic gift idea, too.

This book doesn't claim to have the answers, and that's kind of what I love about it. It does, however, offer just the right questions for digging deep and discovering things you may not have even realized you remember. What's your story?
