This was such an amazing book. As a wife of an Army Vet who suffers from PTSD, I am always looking for inspirational military reads or military reads in general. This is from both Paige and Josh's POV which is great because you really get the insider look at their thoughts and feelings.

Not long after they are married, Josh is deployed to Afghanistan. He steps on an IED and is immediately an amputee. He spends 2 years at Walter Reed with his wife, Paige at his side. The book details their 2 year journey.
The book really went into detail about their struggles. Mental Health was a huge topic and I so related with Josh & Paige during the PTSD parts. How often my husband stares off into space and I have no idea what is going on. I love that they shared those brave, brutal intimate moments.
When Josh stood for the first time, then found out he was going to be a father, those moments were beautiful and I am so proud of this family.

The Wetzel's are from Alabama where my family grew up and I used to travel to Ft.Payne in the Summers where Paige is from.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my ebook copy.

Oh, this book hit all the soft places in my heart. As a fellow military wife, I have seen first hand the trauma and experiences that families go through when someone is deployed and gets injured.

Her heart of faith, the walk she took to stay close to the Lord and how her journey happened.

It's so encouraging, yet so heart-wrenching. I definitely suggest anyone who has walked through trauma or heartache to read this book.

I am reviewing a copy of Beautifully Broken through Faithworks and Netgalley:

On May.31.2012 Paige Wetzel received the call that every military wife prays will never come. Her husband, Army Sergeant Josh Wetzel, stepped on an improvised explosive device while patrolling in Afghanistan. He had lost both of his legs in the blast, he had experienced a traumatic brain injury, and they were uncertain of whether or not he was going to survive.

Paige would learn that as her husband lay wounded from the bomb blast, as he lay there with his legs blown off from the bomb blast, God saved him.

On June 28.2012 then President Barrack Obama visited Walter Reed Hospital, the America of every amputee on the floor was represented by one man walking the halls, President Barrack Obama. After the President asked Josh and other injured soldiers about the level of care they received and noting the various equipment that was being used, Paige stopped the President and asked if she could pray for him before he left, which he happily agreed too. The traumatic journey they had experienced began an unbelievable journey of faith for them as a couple.

Before long Paige found that she was feeling unwell, she thought at first it was from overdoing it, by then her husband was out of the hospital, and they were living in the Barracks room of the army base, but soon she would discover they were pregnant. A few months after the birth of their daughter Paige began to experience intense postpartum depression.

A couple of years later Paige would be come pregnant again. Paige would give birth to their second daughter on October.12.2016.

In this book Paige shares her vulnerability, as she struggles physically, emotionally, and spiritually, will remind you of the power of commitment and love in the face of adversity. You will discover the bravery and grit of a woman who stood behind the battle lines but faced a battle of her own to save her marriage and her family. As a military wife, Paige had to come to terms with the priorities of the military: God, Country, and then Family.

I give Beautifully Broken five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

This is a touching memoir of a couple facing the unthinkable. Josh was a team leader in Afghanistan, using a metal detector. He had found dozens of IEDs before this one. But this one was nonmetallic, a carbon based IED. It exploded beneath him, and he immediately lost both his legs.

Paige and Josh share their experiences. Paige begins with the phone call. They share the narrative as we follow his transportation to Walter Reed, having three surgeries a week, the therapy, counseling, the infection and setbacks, the prostheses, the fight for every inch of mobility. They are honest about the stress on their young marriage, the spiritual struggles and being told they might never be able to have children.

This is quite a detailed account. I learned a great deal about the hospital stay and the difficulty of fitting the prostheses. The pain involved is disheartening. The amount of patience and courage Josh and Paige had to produce is amazing. The descriptions of the wounds and medical procedures are not for the faint of heart. Paige's honest account of her postpartum depression may be difficult for some too. The marital problems were heart breaking.

This book is a good memoir of going through very difficult times and ultimately learning to trust God for the present and the future. It is an encouraging account of overcoming many obstacles to live a fulfilling life. It will give you hope for restoration and renewal and a road map for your mission in serving others.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

"Beautifully Broken" is a wonderfully written testament to the American spirit of duty and sacrifice. Josh and Paige didn't owe us their story but decided to share it with us anyway. I couldn't recommend this book enough to those who need an uplifting true story.
