Legacy is one of those books that draws you in slowly.
Only to make you savour the story chapter by chapter.
When you get to the end it makes you release a long slow breath of satisfaction.
Characters show growth and you never know where these characters are going.
So glad that I got the read this book.
Family dynamics are never easy, and Nora Roberts portrays this perfectly in Legacy. It’s a question we all ask ourselves at one time or another. Do we become our parents because of what is modeled to us or are the traits that shape our character ones we can’t escape because they’re in our genes?
A traumatic incident with her father when Adrian Rizzo was a child set the pace for her life. When she decides to take a different path after the death of her Grandmother, Adrian finds herself a new meaning of family in the community of Traveler’s Creek. Living with her Grandfather, having friends near, she finds life would be perfect except for the poems and the letters anonymously sent to her, reminding her she has a stalker.
Nora Roberts does not disappoint her readers in Legacy. It’s a well-written mystery that will tug at your heart and leave you reading deep into the night or all day long. Though the mystery is compelling I found the family and friends component, along with some romance, is what drew me in. Family changes, people evolve, and the key is forgiveness. The message is clear in the dynamics of this book. It has my recommendation.
I
I enjoyed the fast paced story and the characters and their interactions. I didn't, however, feel this was Nora Roberts at her best. Some of the plot points seemed a little contrived, like throwing in a hot button topic like a school shooting to get rid of a character. The suspense of the stalker was drawn out to the point of "finish it, already!'. The author does know how to tell a good story and keep a reader's interest and I will continue to read he romantic suspense novels.
Nora Roberts does it again, I have been reading her books for a very long time. I devour them as they're released. Spectacular and suspenseful.
An ARC provided by NetGalley of Legacy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Small town, but big passion. The setting was strong, I was a bit put off by the heroine commenting on her body image and others body images. There were a few parts that drug along but it wasn’t too much in my opinion. I always love the heat Ms. Roberts puts into her stories.
Legacy by Nora Roberts was spell-bounding from the get-go. With Adrian and Lina both being fitness business entrepreneurs on their own, the suspense builds with threats on Adrian's life for years. As only Nora Roberts can do, romance is built in as the mystery climaxes and the murders increase. This is Nora Roberts at her best.
As a long time Nora Roberts fan, I was very excited when NetGalley offered this book to me for an early read in exchange for a review.
I have long pre-ordered all of NR's books in anticipation of new adventures, and I wasn't disappointed with 'Legacy'.
Following the story of a strong, independent daughter who's mother isn't the most stellar parent, is very business-focused, and who's past causes some serious trouble for the two, 'Legacy' is very much it's own story. Nora Roberts has a way of presenting new novels every year that you expect will start to read like previous stories after a while, but instead each have their own unique way of presenting a suspenseful romance.
The characters are strong and detailed, and as usual follow a woman who's come into her own, doesn't need a man to help her but isn't against accepting help either. She's fierce and able to thrive despite early childhood trauma and a stalking situation that starting in her early adult years and continued for years.
I was slightly surprised towards the end; as during the entire book I had my mind set on who the stalker/killer was, which caused me to read the killer's parts of the stories in a different way; so that was a pleasurable twist to realize towards the end of the novel.
The romantic scenes are very classy, and unlike some books that tend to err to the more erotic side, these scenes keep in line with the way the whole story is told. The requisite emerging relationship is just enough of the tale to add to it, and not take away from the suspenseful plot. I did like how the male 'hero" actually had a previous loving relationship; unlike other books that tend to cast previous relationships in negative light, drawing the characters together to a more positive one. this allowed for the premise of multiple strong relationships, which I think is more in touch with reality and brought a pleasing plot point to the romantic side of the novel.
Overall, this is one of my favorite Nora Robert's books of late. I feel it's a little different from her previous annual novels; and I feel that no matter how long she has written, she always improves just a little more with each novel.
Highly recommended read for long time Nora Roberts fans; and a great start for those new to her as an author.
What can I say? Pretty standard Nora Roberts: more romance novel than mystery/thriller. Lots of beautiful people who are brilliant at business and become rich and famous. Some bad things happen. Adrian witnesses a brutal attack of her father on her mother when she’s five years old, but that lasts about two pages and then the threat is completely removed. Eventually beloved older family members pass away (three pages of grief and life-must-go-on). Oh, and there’s a stalker, but for the first two-thirds of the book, you pretty much forget their existence while you watch everyone become closer and closer friends and lovers and start building happy families. The stalker’s identity reveal was not much of a surprise. In other words, there’s no suspense. It’s almost like she wrote a romance novel and then, at her publisher’s request, added a stalker.
Very well-written, of course, as always. But despite trying one more time, it’s just not my cup of tea. If it’s yours, by all means buy and enjoy. I would simply prefer a little mystery and thrill in a "mystery/thriller". I might give it a fourth star if they'd simply said it was a romance novel. But then, I probably wouldn't have read it.
Nora Roberts is one of my top favorite authors that never disappoints—I so excited to say that her latest novel Legacy is just as fantastic as I had hoped it would be! Legacy combines the Romance, Women’s Fiction, and Mystery/Suspense genres perfectly! Nora Roberts has a gift with creating characters that are well-developed and very realistic!! When I got to the end of Legacy I knew I could read a long running series surrounding this fantastic cast of characters (still keeping my figures crossed that this will someday come to fruition lol)! Legacy is a 5 star read that comes out just in time for summer 2021 and I highly encourage everyone put it at the top of your summer reading list! Absolute must read!!
It's been a long time since I've read a Nora Roberts book so I jumped on the opportunity to read it when it became available on Netgalley. Thank to Netgalley, Publisher and Author for this opportunity.
Legacy was a slower paced book for me. While the characters were all developed very well, I found myself pausing to pick it up sometimes because I typically like my books a little faster paced.
Don't let that deter you though. As the story gets deeper, it starts to flow enough to savor this story.
This is a story of love and loss. My heart broke several times for some characters. Especially Adrian and Raylan. Adrian is the main character and her life will take you through the ups and downs. She is an incredibly strong character who you can't help but to love. I felt this same exact way about Raylan.
This is a true romance book with a small element of suspense. Adrian is receiving death poems but doesn't do much about it because her life is in the spotlight. But enough is enough and you will start to give every character the side eye.
I did enjoy this book but it was just a little short on what I like a lot of in my books. Even still, I would recommend this book.
This was one of the best books by Nora Roberts I've read in a while. I loved the characters and watching their backstories happen in "real" time. I also liked that Raylan's wife was wonderful and that there was room for her in his new life. I really liked Adrian - her work ethic, she was so smart and created her own "tribe". Nora kept the story really tight and I rooted for each and every character. Loved the dogs!! And, the mystery, although a bit unneeded, was not over the top and the end was perfect - Raylan had to be a part of it, to not feel helpless again. But, then, neither Raylan or Adrian was helpless or alone. This was a wonderful book!
3.5 stars - This felt like a lovely return to form in terms of hitting the romantic suspense beats that I expect from La Nora's annual standalone thriller release. I really loved the found family aspects of this one and how cozy the small town felt. For those who love this kind of story from this author, I think you will be please. The things that dinged this down a bit for me tie back to the heroine's profession. If this had been more in the background, I probably wouldn't have let it bother me so much but 1) as a social media influencer myself (albeit on a far smaller scale than the heroine is supposed to be), the numbers/logistics of how her platform was running did not make sense to me and 2) as a fitness influencer, she was so often policing others bodies or having her own policed. I just wish that element hadn't been there.
Still, as a whole, this was the immersive thriller experience that I expect from Nora every year... now I just have to wait til next for another :)
CW: child/domestic abuse, orthorexia, use of Romani slur
Legacy by Nora Roberts is a suspense/mystery and romance all blended together. Adrian, the main character, has a strict disciplined upbringing from her fitness brand highly driven CEO mother. The encounter with her father changes her life. She gets to live with her grandparents in a small town for the summer. Adrian blends both discipline and normal life, into a career for herself. Raylan, her love interest, is a widower with two small children. These are really well-developed characters and friends. So much research must go into this novel for you to experience the marketing and development of a fitness brand ( Adrian's career) And the creation of a graphic novel and the graphic novel world (Raylan's career). It’s so believable and easy to immerse yourself into their lives. It makes you want to visit this town and these people in real life.
This book takes you away into a new world with your best friends. Perfect read for these cold and rainy spring days.
It was a wonderful read. This is my very first Nora Robert's book and I have become a fan. The journey, the way the story was built up, the climax - everything was perfect. It was just the right amount of everything. It had subtle humor, strong character build up, great storyline and a beautiful narration. It didn't feel rushed at any point nor did it felt dragging. I would rate it five stars. Great work...
Special thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
Nora Roberts' standalone books never fail to entertain, and this newest story is no exception.
I really loved the storyline, and enjoyed the characters immensely... The mystery is engaging, the romance is a lovely flow (view spoiler) , and I always adore when the pets feature heavily into the story!
I will admit, this one reminded me a lot of Tribute, one of her earlier works. (view spoiler) and while there were a lot of similarities, the mystery and storyline were different enough to keep me engaged.
I always look forward to her new releases, and was highly entertained by this newest edition to her bibliography!
This newest book has all the “Nora Roberts feels”. A slow romance, which after much tribulations, blooms. There is of course, the angst, danger and mystery always included in Nora’s books, but the story also is warm, caring and heart wrenching in places. Add this to your top TBR list. Don’t miss it.
Legacy by Nora Roberts In the beginning, the story grabs your attention with an intense opening. From then on the suspense is minimal until the last few chapters. More a family drama with likable characters, small town vibe, adorable kids and Sadie and Jasper. Sadie and Jasper were fantastic. Raylan is a true hero and friend. Adrian is driven to succeed to the extreme at times. The last chapters did seem rushed and filled with unneeded profanity.
Family drama, love story, successful women, serial killer/stalker, the book has it all.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
I had taken a break from Nora Roberts for a few years, and I'm so glad I became reacquainted with her through this book. Legacy grabbed my attention with a fast paced start and kept it with great storytelling.
Legacy is the story of Adrian Rizzo, the daughter of a health and fitness guru. The story begins during Adrian's childhood and the first time she meets her father. He attempts to kill Adrian, but is thwarted by her mother. Adrian grows up between a small town in Maryland, where her grandparents own a restaurant, and a home base in New York City. Her mother often travels for work and Adrian is stuck going with her, until one day in high school when Adrian decides to stay home and work on a project. This project launches Adrian's own career and creates lifelong friends. When her career begins, darkness descends in the form of threatening, mysterious poems delivered to Adrian each year.
One of the aspects of Legacy that I really loved was the strength of the relationships among the characters. Ms. Roberts breathes life into the characters by making them care for and look after each other. The characters are not perfect, which makes them easier to relate to and like. I had also forgotten how well Nora Roberts creates suspense. Usually I'm good at figuring out who the suspect is in a story, but I didn't get it right with this one! I think I flew through the last fifty pages or so! I very much enjoyed this read. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read Legacy.
Nora Roberts never disappoints. Her newest book, LEGACY, is the story of a young woman finding her way in the world after a harrowing experience as a young child.. With her unmistakable style, the author weaves a story of family, individual achievement, strong emotions and suspense. The reader is drawn into the life of Adrian Rizzo as she rises above an experience that might have marked her forever: "The first time Adrian Rizzo met her father, he tried to kill her." Growing up as a sheltered young girl, she breaks out determined to make her own way in life.
She struggles to find success and through her work, engages with a group of talented -- and somewhat unlikely --friends who become family even as she bonds with her own beloved grandparents. Her strength and character see her through all the hard times and bring her to a place of love and remarkable self-reliance. in the end, she strives to realize all of her dreams even as the one person who has cast a shadow over her life seeks to end them. LEGACY is an excellent read for longtime fans as well as those new to the magic of Nora.
Review (4.5 Stars): This contemporary mystery/romance/thriller is split into 3 parts and features different POVs, but Roberts’ skillful character development is woven throughout. The relationship between mother, grandparents, and close friends often feel like vignettes giving you a glimpse into each character’s life without detracting from the main storyline. Each character, human or dog, is intertwined in the plot, although it’s not always apparent immediately.
Adrian, our main character, sets the tone with the very first sentence, “The first time Adrian Rizzo met her father, he tried to kill her.” While I would definitely classify this as thriller, the action is mostly relegated to the last quarter of the book. Instead, we grow up with Adrian as she becomes an independent and successful women, who maintains very close relationships with her grandparents and friends, but struggled with her relationship with her mother. She also catches the eye of a secret admirer, who sends a poem foretelling her death, on a regular basis. This standalone from Roberts is able to deliver charm, intrigue, and every range of emotion from happiness to sadness.
Note: I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is my own.
