The Monster is my Basement by Dave Preston is a delightful little book. The story is engaging and quick to read. The pictures are bright and colorful. My daughter liked this book and wanted to read it several times. The book can also be sung as a song which my daughter loves!

The publisher made a copy of this book available via Netgalley. This is my honest review.

As it happens sometimes, Dave goes to the basement of his house. Where, as it almost never happens, he discovers a monster.

Dave’s a kind child. The monster looks sad. Dave asks the monster, why?

It’s simply. The monster is hungry. That’s a problem easy to solve, except… Dave doesn’t know what monsters like to eat. Worse, is it possible this monster may want to eat him?

A lovely book, perfect for young children. Five year-olds and around would appreciated the best, I think. Younger children may get a bit anxious about the opening pages. Older children may not get spooked at all, which is a bit part of the charm of this book.

The spook factor is low, mostly because the illustrations are just tons of fun and the monster, with its fluffy coat and long unicorn-like horn, is just too cute to scare anyone. And, also very important, there’s a happy ending. A very happy one. However, Dave’s initial fear about the monster intentions when it takes him into his cave is enough to create some suspense of the kind young children love.

I found this book entertaining and clever. My younger nephew agrees with me.

The Monster in My Basement is a cute book that reminds me of The Monster at the End of This Book with Grover in Sesame Street. As a parent of Sesame Street kids, that is a high recommendation. The ending is different, but the feels are very similar. I kept wondering what was going to happen and was happily surprised by the ending. I even laughed out loud and surprised my listening audience!

I highly recommend this book to younger students, K- possibly 2nd grade. It seems predictable but there are a few surprises thrown in to keep the reader, (and listeners), on the edge of the seat!

I easily give this book five stars!

This book is about not making judgements at first sight, not jumping to conclusions, and the power of friendship (and pizza!) There is a song that goes along with the rhymes and I found listening to that made the rhymes easier to understand.

This was such a fun monster book! Great for children who many be needing to overcome the monsters in the dark fear. I loved the colors and pictures.
What more can a kid ask for. This has a monster, pizza, a little musical, and a good laugh.
Just pick this up anytime for your children. Great for Halloween time with friendly, loveable monsters.

Basements can be dark and scary. Dave meets Howard, a monster in his basement. Howard invites him over to eat but Dave is worried, is to eat or be eaten. Did he make a mistake he is wondering? The only mistake, Dave realizes, is that the monster wanted to eat him. Howard was just being nice.

What a cute little story in the lessons of making a judgement on appearances. It's a good lesson for all of us to learn.

Super cute book about a boy who finds a monster in his basement and the monster is hungry and would like to take the boy to dinner. Dave, the boy goes along with Howard, the monster to Howard's cave. Along the way they pick up some supplies, causing Dave to wonder if this was a good idea after all. What will happen to Dave? Will he be monster food, or something else? Read this adorable book and find out what happens to Dave and his new "friend." (Here's a hint: it's a happy ending.) Filled with colorful illustrations and a fun story, you and your children will love this book. Perfect for early elementary school ages. I freaking love this cute storybook!

Everything is well-balanced. A good story which tells children to be not terrified of monsters.

Throughout the read, I was a bit apprehensive too like the main character as if waiting for the monster and his mom to pounce on him... like it would happen anytime!

I love how it ended. I love the illustrations.

The font size and everything else was just perfect.

While this picture book can be read easily without listening to the song, it really does make it a lot more fun and interactive!
The repeating chorus bit is a lot of fun and the story has colorful and descriptive text to go along with the illustrations!

This is a children's book that me and my 10 year old daughter read to my 6 year old twin boys. The pictures in this book was so cute, and I loved them so much. This was a cute and fun story that all my kids really enjoyed reading/listening to. My boys laughed so hard during parts of this story. This is a silly book, but has a great message about not judging people/monsters just by what they look like. I feel how the world is right now this is a super important message. I have really been loving reading to my kids lately, and I am glad I have found some new favorites. I love how the words are colored differently and how the illustrations are clean and detailed. The monster is cute and all the foods look so appetizing.

What a sweet story about a scary monster who is not so scary after all! He just wants to bring a friend over for dinner...a pizza dinner!

A lovely, fun, rhyming story for sharing with young children. The author has written a song on the same theme which is printed in the back of the book.

This is such a fun book. It is about a little boy who finds a monster in his basement. This monster seems sad, lonely, and hungry. The monster wants the little boy to come to his home, even thought the little boy was nervous he took a chance and decided to go, and was very glad he did.

The part I liked the most is that even though when you think of a monster you think of the stereotype that monsters are scary and evil and mean, this books shows that not every monster meets this stereotype, there are good ones too. This applies to our society as a whole and sends a wonderful message about giving people or, "monsters" in this case, a chance and not to judge someone based on their stereotype! Great book!!!

Will definitely be reading this again!!
This book is right up my four year old ally. Now he's stopping around saying we have a monster in our attic (as we don't have a basement)
