a creepy mystery this one with secrets coming at the reader from all directions. I liked the idea of these women reuniting and that an event in the past would come back to haunt them. That cover gave me the look of the lodge that never left me when reading the book and it totally set the scene.

Mysteries and ghostly goings on in claustrophobic places make for a good read.

I loved the premise of this book as it is right up my street. I enjoyed the majority of it and felt that the characters were well-developed but the plot pacing didn’t work for me and I found it a little hard to get into. I will definitely read it again in the future though and thank you for the chance to read this.

A very creepy read. Four women return to a Montana lodge that was the scene of a tragedy that separated them twenty-five years ago. But now the past seems to have returned with murder, dreams, and secrets that threaten to be exposed.

A fun, twisty thriller. Highly recommended.

A large portion of this story is made up of memories as the main character works through her grief. Made for a difficult read.

This book is well written and has good character development I just couldn’t personally get into the story and found it a little bit of a struggle to keep reading. In the end it does wrap up everything and answers the questions you have, just left a little lacking for me personally. Basically a feud between families over land, a decision daughters have to make - keep the land and the legacy of the buildings or sell. And a mystery of a death on the property that is asking to be solved in the form of a ghost. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a great story, with great characters that were well developed and a rich atmosphere. The story was suspenseful but not what I would call edge of your seat. It was a slow burn with a lot happening. I did enjoy the story through and loved the town and setting. The background story was also awesome and the supernatural aspect was creepy. I wish it would have been more punchy. The main characters behaviour drove me a little mad. Like some seemingly creepy event would happen and it would be brushed off. My moms acting very strange oh well I’ll deal with it later off to go clean a window, strange some unseen being is leaving me penny’s oh well I’m off to mop a floor. There were a couple underlying mysteries at play in this book and the one I was most into was almost an anticlimactic end, but again still a good solid story. The other had that heightened danger climax but I was again a little disappointed and who the perp was and why.
Overall it was a good story, held my interest and I enjoyed reading it but it did not WOW me

Good read, A recently widowed woman goes back to her family lodge in Montana where she is involved in a murder of a local attorney. Secrets long hidden are revealed and family and friends come to terms with things hidden in the past. Beautiful description of area in Montana, who knew that family lodges on lakes there. Reminded me of places in upstate New York. Will recommend.

Bitterroot Lake is a novel of events that happened in the past. Sarah, who is recently widowed returns to her childhood home and reconnects with the past to make good with her present.

25 years an assault occurs, this is followed by a fatal traffic accident. Sarah moves away after these incidents. The characters are pretty easy to relate to and quite relatable. Filled with grief, an element of mystery, and tragedy, I struggled to continue reading some parts of this novel.

Overall the plot was good and starts out grabbing your attention. Most of this book is about Sarah's dreams and some strange visitations that she encounters.

I would like to thank Alicia Beckman, Crooked Lane Books, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Summary:
A well-written novel with a strange twist at the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the copy of Bitterroot Lake. This is a voluntary review.

Bitterroot Lake is tale of grief, mystery, murder, and reconciliation. Twenty-five years ago four women went separate ways after a tragedy that left someone dead. Now, a death is bringing them back together near Bitterroot Lake, in a lush, cabin-filled forest.

Sarah, the MC, finds herself juggling grief from the young death of her husband, and a haunting return to her childhood home where she connects with old friends and confronts distant family. Coming out the gate we learn the intimate details of the tragedy that happened in the past, but the story slows down from there. The initial blitz of info serves as a stage for the murder that occurs in the present time. Suspicion is everywhere, leaving Sarah trying to connect with people she doesn't know if she can fully trust.

Much of the story is dialogue and memories as Sarah works through her grief. The characters are built up well from this, but I did find it a little boring in the middle as the first few chapters had so much happening. Dreaming is also a huge chunk of this book, connecting the first and current tragedy through Sarah's premonition-like dreams. It was supernatural towards the end. I didn't love this tie-in since I really enjoyed the realistic atmosphere and conversations the author created.

Bitterroot Lake left me wanting a bit more mystery by the end, but it was very well-written, and I loved the setting and small-town feeling throughout. I will definitely be checking out the author's future works, and it made for an interesting, enjoyable debut.

4 stars

Twenty-five years earlier an assault occurred and was followed by a tragic traffic accident. Sarah McCaskill was at the party that night and witnessed the events. She moved away from Whitetail Lodge on Bitterroot Lake after that.

Only days widowed, she returns at the request of her mother to set the old lodge, now pretty much abandoned, to rights. She will clean and make repairs. She finds an abandoned cat and adopts her. She also finds an old friend squatting in one of the cabins. Janine says she found Lucas' body shot to death. She is afraid she will be blamed. Lucas was the driver of the car in which the young man was killed. Now, Lucas has been shot to death in his attorney office.

This book has an element supernatural in it. Sarah identifies her “visitor” from an old picture she finds in one of her ancestor's photo albums, As she finally begins to talk about the visitations, she learns that she is not the only one who has seen the mysterious young woman. Anja was an employee of the lodge many, many years earlier. She died under somewhat mysterious circumstances.

This book is about the secrets that we all think we need to keep and the consequences of keeping secrets. What is the ultimate cost of them? How to they affect the family as a whole? In an understated manner, this book discusses the issue. Sarah worries too much and imagines things are not okay, when really they are. She seems perfectly normal to me, except for her little “visitations.” I think this is a good book. The reader learns enough about the major characters so that they become known, but it does not detract from the story line at all. We also get a smattering of the history behind the lodge, which I found interesting. I enjoyed this book. I look forward to checking out Ms. Beckman's next offering.

I want to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review.

Twenty-five years ago, during a celebratory weekend at historic Whitetail Lodge, Sarah McCaskill had a vision. A dream. A nightmare. When a young man was killed, Sarah's guilt over having ignored the warning in her dreams devastated her.

This was great. I couldn't put it away.
The story was so well written.
I loved the role of each character!.

Thank you NetGalley. Publisher.

I tried a few times to get into this book but nothing was connecting me. It's slow moving and I didn't connect with the characters. I may try again when it's closer to publication date.
It just didn't work for me.

Thanks to Netgalley for my advanced ebook copy.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Sarah McCaskill ignored a vision she had 25 years ago where a young man was killed. She returns to her mothers cottage but can't forget about the murder. Thus book was good,b but dragged a bit in places.

I received an advance copy of, Bitterroot Lake, by Alicia Beckman. This book was really boring, slow moving and dry. Sarah has dreams, that sometimes come true, like when a young man was killed. Now she has nightmares. I just could not get in to this book. Very sluggish.

It’s been over twenty years since Sarah dismissed a vision she had at the Whitetail Lodge. A young man died as a result and Sarah has always blamed herself. Devastated after the death, Sarah withdrew from her closest friends and even her family, choosing to move away and start over. All these years later, she’s nursing a broken heart and her mother urges her to return to Whitetail, a place Sarah always loved, so she can take time to heal. But when she returns, peace and quiet are the last things she finds as her visions return and another death visits Bitterroot Lake
