Mental illness and public policy are incredibly important in today's world but it's sad that there is still so much stigma and misunderstanding surrounding mental illness. This book gives a quick overview of the most common mental health disorders and the biological aspects. The topic of anosognosia is fascinating and I wish it was more openly talked about. It's frustrating that the naysayers and antipsychiatry groups are really doing harm to so many people. The ignorance of these people and especially the policymakers is very disturbing.

A Cause for Alarm is an interesting book that outlines the current (deplorable) state of mental health treatment.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is concise and well written. Although the ideas about mental health and issues such as suicide and use of prisons as de facto mental health institutions may be somewhat familiar to the reader, the author uses relevant statistics to show the true depth of the problem.

It is an important and timely call to arms that more needs to be done to promote mental health research especially in emerging areas such as genomic diagnostics.
