This is a great book for little girls, especially of color. I love how it ends saying that Ruby knows she can be anything she wants to be!

A sweet book about an inquisitive, inventive, enthusiastic child. The questions throughout would be great for generating comments from kids during a storytime, or reading together at home! Beautifully illustrated as well.

I received an eARC of this book in return for an honest review; thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity.

This book is a lovely romp through an imaginative child’s mind, a sort of day in the life which introduces you to a character named Ruby.

It was a very fun read with my toddler, great for people who are fans of Oliver Jeffers and Andrea Beaty’s The Questioners series.

At times the story seemed a bit non-linear, but if taken as just a simple character exploration perhaps as part of a larger series about other children it could be even more enjoyable.

I liked that occasionally paused and asked the reader questions of the cadence seemed inconsistent based on the pacing of the book.

Overall a fun quick read and plenty of detail in the illustrations to make it worth several rereads.

This is Ruby is a book about a very busy little girl. She enjoys painting, and writing, and drawing, and trying every new thing she can think of. I think this book would be great for bedtime with all the colours and calm tone. I like that the book ends with her enjoying simple every day life as I think kids are often envious of the characters who take big adventures. How unfair reality can be!

a great encouraging book for girls to show them that they can be and achieve anything. it's especially great that a Black girl gets to be the main character here!

thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest opinion.

This Is Ruby is a story about a little girl named Ruby and the creative world she has built around herself. Ruby is a role model for young children, especially young girls, for the inspiration she provides to be whatever you want to be. The book is absolutely beautiful in color and illustration and would be a great addition to the classroom!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book will help kids discover that it is okay to pursue their passions and interests, no matter what others think.

If I were a parent, this would be the first book I read to my children.

What a cute story! These illustrations are everything! This book is perfect for young children. Through simple and sweet narration and absolutely gorgeous and colorful illustrations, we follow Ruby and all her big dreams for the future. I really loved Ruby and her pup, Teddy. They were fantastic. Even teens and adults will connect to this loveable main character; her fun potion-making and other adventures remind me of when I was younger and would mash up acorns and leaves with my little sister and make our own little potions — though ours looked nothing like her colorful creations! Our "excavations" included digging up our backyard (sorry mom) until we hit roots, convinced we had discovered dinosaur bones.

This book is one for everyone. It does a lovely job of encouraging curiosity, exploration, and dreaming big! Go women in STEM!

This is Ruby is a beautiful and empowering book! Ruby doesn't know what she wants to be someday, but she is curious and wants to ask lots of questions and do lots of things. The colors and illustrations in the book draw you straight in. This is a book I will definitely be sharing with my preschool classroom! I love how the author encourages wonderment, creativity and curiosity throughout the book.

This is Ruby by Sara O'Leary and Alea Marley is an invitation into Ruby's whimsical world. The vibrant illustrations made me feel welcomed into Ruby's adventures. There is never a boring day in Ruby's world. She is always up for trying new things and invites the reader to come along. There was one part that was confusing in regards to her parents and if they met before dinosaurs. - LOL. Otherwise, the story had a wonderful rhythm to it. I am sure Ruby will be a hit in many homes.

A common activity foisted upon kids of all ages is the "what do you want to be when you grow up?" game. On the one hand, it's a fun way to challenge kids to think about the future and focus their learning. On the other hand, there's not much point in pressing 5-year-olds to choose a career because it not only turns up loads of unrealistic nonsense but also puts pressure on kids to just pick one thing. What I love about the book, This Is Ruby, is that the child in the book is not contained. She can be girly. She can be smart, She can be creative. She can be tough. She is all of those things and more, and she has no reason to fit into anyone's stereotype. Childhood is meant to be a safe place to discover and experiment, which is why kids are so good at playing. I'll be happy to share this book with my younger students and work in opportunities for them to explore the many facets of who they are and can be.
(for the record, when I was 5, I wanted to be a ballerina. I'm glad I wasn't forced into that life, because I'm much happier as a book editor and reviewer than I would have ever been as a dancer)

I like everything about this book. The bar is set high, with a book such as this. And it’s the little things that count just as much as the big things.
I like that childhood photographs are used instead of adult photos or no photos at all of the author and illustrator, at the back flap of the book; they help to make a connection. I also like the background of Ruby on the front flap of the book.
I like how we are introduced to Ruby as she walks into the room, as perhaps a teacher may do with a new student at school. I laughed at the ‘dinosaurs and way way back’ part of the story. A subject that children often laugh about with parents.

If i have to say in one sentence what this book is about - it’s about opening your eyes to all possibilities, being curious about everything by trying things and also living in the moment. And i love the fact that it shows children so many possibilities, it communicates that one child can achieve anything they want to if they put fun, imagination and work into it. This book (maybe with the help of their parents) will get them wondering how STEM subjects are connected with their everyday play.

Alea Marley’s illustrations are gorgeous: professionally executed, colourful, textural and smile inducing. There is so much to make me smile about them. So imaginative and fun. For instance, I think that Ruby’s idea for her journeying through time is so imaginative and just the thing a child could come up with themselves.
Ruby is so sweet and Teddy is a fab companion and beautifully drawn (is he wearing a hat or?)

I have not read ‘This is Sadie’, but i will definitely seek out a copy now.

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the opportunity of reading an ARC of this book.

This book is a journey through the curious mind of a little girl named Ruby, which provides many opportunities for discussion with children about her adventures. This ties in strongly with the illustrations that will get kids inspired about the possibilities of who they are, and who they want to be. Ruby is truly amazing, but I felt I needed more from this book to make it stand out from others with this theme. Maybe a touch of struggle, so it's not all sunshine and perfection?

This book follows Ruby as she explores many different interests and careers. I love that this encourages children to stay open and reminds them they don’t have to have one right answer to “what do you want to do when you grow up?” Instead, it encourages exploration and having fun, which are super important! The illustrations are flat out gorgeous and make me want to buy anything that Marley illustrates. I recommend for young children who are curious, who are learning about the different things they like, or who love stories read aloud. It’s such a conversation starter between parents and kids or classes.

A children's book full of vibrant illustrations - check!
A children's book about a curious and inventive little girl - check!
A children's book with a child of colour as the main character - check!

This book has everything a children's book should have. I found it engaging, inspirational and fun. I can't wait to read it with my daughter and son.

This was an easy to follow sweet story for the prek=2nd grade range. The illustrations were vibrant and enticing while the story itself took the reader on an adventure of ideas. This was an easy to follow book with lots of wonderful ideas for kids to consider and be inspired by from an average afternoon to time travel and new discoveries. I highly recommend this book to any young reader / family. I was especially pleased to see that Ruby was a diverse main character because I truly believe that representation matters in all levels of reading.

This children’s book was a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed that it was about a child of color and that it stayed true to natural African-American hair. Ruby is a precocious little girl who has big dreams and an even bigger imagination! It was nice to see her have ambitions different from typical little girl dreams such as a princess, vet, etc. The illustrations were colorful, well done, and fit nicely with the story line.
