Cute story about a fox going in search of a special glowing ocean plant. Along the way he meets some friends that lend a helping hand, or rather a fin. A great fit for a child who wants to explore the ocean!

Constellation of the Deep is a fun hybrid story. It is mixing a fictional story of Fox diving into the deep to explore the ocean. In the midst of the fictional story, readers will run into a ton of nonfiction information that is utilized to teach them about the ocean. The illustrations and labels are great for young readers that are interested in the plant and animal life of the ocean.

This will be one of my go to books for discussions about getting outside and the experiences we can have with nature.

Created by Benjamin Flouw, a French animator turned author-illustrator, Constellation of the Deep follows Fox on his quest to find an elusive, glowing, undersea plant. Along the way, Fox talks to and identifies various animals and strange plants. And he even manages to find his sought-after constellation—sort of.

This informational text is an engaging mix of narrative and nonfiction. Every few pages include drawings of the gear, plants, and animals that Fox sees and uses on his voyage. With bright, engaging colors, Flouw’s illustrations are visually stunning and informationally rich all at once, full of bright, engaging colors and subtle details. His text is equally rich as it describes the world both above and below the water.

I particularly enjoyed the connection of helping others and the environment to Fox’s success. A good lesson told without moralization of didacticism can be hard to accomplish, yet Flouw does so flawlessly. His is an eye-catching picture book with an equally beautiful message.

While beautifully illustrated,, this story is an unusual mix of realism and fantasy that I did not respond to.
This is the tale of Fox, largely anthropomorphized, who goes diving in the ocean to find a plant called the constellation of the deep.
In his dive, Fox sees a myriad of plants and animals that are realistically identified and rendered with beautiful drawings. Fox is able to communicate with other animals and has a great day in the ocean.
Children may relate to this book in a more positive way than I did.

Fox loves nature, particularly interesting and unusual plant life. So when Seagull tells him about the a special plant call the Constellation of the Deep, Fox knows he must see it for himself. But although he discovers many wonders in his journey, this special treasure remains elusive. Will Fox really find the Constellation of the Deep?

This beautifully illustrated book is whimsical and fun, while still sharing relevant information about plant life and nature study. The names of coral, seaweed and underwater life is taught without feeling heavy and overwhelming. And the adventurous story delighted both my children and myself. It would make a sweet addition to bedtime or an ocean unit in homeschool.

A complete review has been scheduled to be expanded upon and finalized to be released closer to the publication date and will be reviewed prior to its going live.

This book is just absolutely beautifully illustrated. I cannot rave enough about the calming color palette and illustrations, it's perfection. Vibrant and soothing, engaging and lively. It seemed like child was audibly saying "wow" after every page. She was loving exploring the pages and enjoyed the small touches such as a Fox drinking mushroom juice - which she found to be just hilarious.

From the parent perspective, I wish there had been a pronunciation guide under the algae names, as I'm not sure I said a single one of them correctly. Overall, I can easily see this book on the shelves of classrooms and home libraries being used as a fun exploration into the deep sea with your child or students.

What a wonderful and fabulously beautiful book
I stumbled upon and requested this book on NetGalley and to be honest wasn’t expecting much, but this turned out to be an amazing treat!
I am fascinated with anything underwater and was instantly pulled into the words and all the beautiful colours of the books. We follow the journey of two friends who explore around and the fox goes deeper into the ocean looking for a rare plant. I honestly cannot wait for the physical book to come out so I can spend hours with the amazing pictures and colours of it.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC.

This was a delightful children’s book following Fox’s journey deep into the ocean to find the Constellation of the deep. I adored how there was so much information in this tale without feeling heavy. The names of different types or coral, seaweed, and other underwater life made it both a fun and learning reading experience. Very well done and beautiful book.

A gorgeous and fun story! I had a blast reading this book! I was initially drawn in by the fact that this book is perfect for fans of Wes Anderson ( and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). I have always loved Anderson’s movies and the stylish way he makes them. This book is right up that alley! Gorgeous colors, fun layouts, and honestly just a charming story about exploring the sea. I think kids will have a lot of fun learning about sea creatures and plants in this book while going on a journey!

*Thanks Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Really nice art in this one. Colorful and attention grabbing. I love how the foxes have such human-look to them just such a nice, subtle touch of anthropomorphism. Also, this story is a great mixture of fiction and nonfiction. We have the story for the fox searching for the Constellation of the Deep (fiction). And how fun is it to imagine a fox scuba diving. So cool. Then we have the images of plant life and scuba equipment, etc clearly defined (nonfiction). This would be an excellent read aloud for bedtime stories of librarians looking for ocean-themed story time titles.

Fox and Wolf enjoy walking along the coast and finding strange plants. When they learn of a special plant called the constellation of the deep, Fox must go find it! I loved Fox’s persistence in his quest to find this mysterious plant that glows in the dark. Fox learns so much along the way too - a reminder that the journey is sometimes better than the destination. Kids will love this read aloud as it piques their curiosity about the deep, dark underwater world. Gorgeous illustrations add to the story.

As soon as I started reading this book I immediately thought of Wes Anderson films, and didn't realize until after I was finished reading that it's recommended for fans of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou!

This story was adorable, and the artwork was incredible! The book follows a Fox, who loves the ocean. He's determined to find a new, unique plant called the Constellation of the Deep, and sets out on a diving trip to find it. He finds a lot of different plants, meets various aquatic animals, saves a whale, and makes it back home safe. It's a very adventurous story, and one that is sure to spark many questions from young readers. From the different plant life to animal that you meet along the way, environmental themes, and general curiosity, there is much to learn from this book, and it's laid out in a simple way for young readers. Plus, adults will get a kick out of some of the language used.

I know that my younger self, who was dead set on growing up to be a marine biologist, would have loved this book. If you have kids at home who love to learn, you'll want to pick up this book for them.

Thank you to the publisher, Penguin Random House Canada, for a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley.
