Active Defense is the 3rd book in the Danger Never Sleeps series by Lynette Eason, and it can be read as a stand-alone novel. Army surgeon Heather Fontaine has seen her own share of tragedy including trying to save the life of a child bomber during her tour in the Middle East. Now, stateside, Heather is adjusting to civilian life, but she discovers she has a stalker. Heather dismisses the threat level, but her friends secretly recruit Travis Walker, who has his own security agency, to look after her. Eason has created another action-packed novel filled with unexpected twists and turns that any seasoned suspense readers won't see coming.

ACTIVE DEFENSE is the third book in the series, but it stands alone. The book starts slow, but the relationships and the backstory is necessary as you attempt to figure out who-dun-it and why before all is revealed.

I'm an avid romantic suspense reader and I was kept guessing as I read. I did figure it out before the end.

I couldn't put this book down. The best in the series, so far.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Heather Fontaine had suspected she had a stalker for awhile but when someone broke into her home, she decided that she was putting the safety of her friends into danger so she disappeared. Fiercely independent, Heather tried not to let herself get too close to people and certainly would never ask anyone for help. Turns out she actually had another stalker in Travis Walker whose career was in security, only Travis was secretly keeping watch over Heather in order to protect her.

As in all novels by Lynette Eason, the suspense and danger ramped up with each chapter if not by the page. Who was stalking Heather and for what reason and how far were they willing to go? Plenty of action and unexpected twists kept me turning those pages and the well blended elements of faith and romance made it all the sweeter. It was fun seeing characters from earlier books in the series as well as meeting new ones in Active Defense.

As always, I recommend this book as well as any book written by this author. It stands on its own quite well but would be even more enjoyable if the series were read in proper order. Pick up your own copy soon!

Heather survived an abusive childhood, time in foster care and time as a field surgeon in Afghanistan, but now, safely back on US soil, she faces a stalker who seems to want her dead. Her upbringing taught her to stand on her own two feet and never ask for help, but now she has friends who won't take no for an answer - fortunately for her! Will she learn not only to give but also to accept help - particularly from Travis? And will they find out in time who is out to kill her?

A standalone story despite sharing some characters with previous books, this is an action-packed story that still manages to have the reader get to know and care about the characters. The character development is managed well, particularly Heather, and I didn't pick the killer until fairly late in the piece (I don't generally try very hard though). I didn't enjoy the insights into the killer's mindset and plans though - it's a horrible idea that anyone is like that. Nevertheless, it wasn't a major part of the book and wouldn't put me off reading it again. All in all, a good read for lovers of suspense with some inspirational/Christian content.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Active Defense by Lynette Eason is one wild ride. This is a story the reader will not want to put down. As with the previous two novels in the Danger Never Sleeps series, Active Defense is a story that will keep the reader guessing right up until the end. It was fun to see characters from the first two novels make several cameo appearances. I actually quite like the deep friendship between the women in this series. They are always there for one another, and, like all true friendships, are willing to call each other out when necessary and hold each other accountable. They are a great illustration of true friendship. I love the relationship between Heather and Travis. I think it is sweet how much Travis is drawn to Heather. His protectiveness of her, his consideration of her feelings, and his acknowledgment of her being an intelligent, independent, strong woman makes Travis one excellent hero. I found that Heather and Travis’s relationship grew naturally and realistically over the course of the story — this is definitely not an insta-love kind of romance. I found Heather’s trust issues relatable. Her upbringing has made trusting others quite difficult. Instead, Heather feels it is best to take care of things on her own and with as little fuss as possible so as not to burden others. I relate to Heather in this. Trust is a really hard thing for me, and I found that the way Heather works through her trust issues is rather realistic and familiar. I also love how down-to-earth and common-sense she is. Heather is a rule-follower, sure, but she also uses her brain. She assesses her situations and creates solutions to problems based on what is appropriate for the moment rather than following a black-and-white rule book. I really love this quick-thinking, common sense, logical way about Heather. And, finally, my favorite aspect to Active Defense is the suspense and mystery. It definitely kept me turning pages well into the night. I love the fast-paced, highly engaging, edge-of-your-seat kind of read that is Active Defense. This is a story I highly recommend, and I cannot wait for the next novel in this series to release!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on January 9, 2021, in order to review. I also received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

If you have not read any of her series, you are missing out. Lynette Eason writes with a depth missing from some suspense writers. I love the focus on military and law enforcement groups in her writing. This continuation of the series is wonderful. It was great seeing Heather's story and learning about her background. If you enjoy suspense, seeing someone rise above their past trauma, and a relationship begin then you will love Active Defense. It can be a stand alone novel but is best read along with the other books in the series.

I received an ARC via Netgalley but I freely gove my honest review.

This is book three in the Danger Never Sleeps series. I feel it is a stand alone, however you will miss history of some of the characters in this book, if you do not read book one (Collateral Damage) or two (Acceptable Risk) first. Not enough to leave you wandering what is going on, but enough you will probably want to read them all.
I love the writing style of Lynette Eason, she does a great job developing her characters, and their circumstances. This book is full of mystery, suspense, friendship, and of course romance. We reconnect with characters we met in previous books and learn more about them. Heather Fontaine has a lot to overcome and when she reluctantly must ask for help from her friends, she wonders if she has asked to much. Without giving anything away I absolutely loved the ending,
I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.

Active Defense—What another great book by Lynette Eason. Although this is the third in the series Danger Never Sleeps you don’t have to read the other books first but you will want to go back and read them because this one is so good.
Active Defense tells the story of Dr. Heather Fontaine, who grew in the foster child system. Therefore, she has to deal with her insecurities and the wall she had built up in her life for protection. Due to several incidents with a stalker, home invasion and kidnapping, her friend Travis begins to try to protect her and their friendship grows and the wall starts to come down. The book is suspenseful and the story line is fast and not predictable.

If you like suspense and romance you will love this book.

Field surgeon Heather Fontaine returns home from Afghanistan to find that danger continues to follow her with the taunting of a stalker.

An action filled suspense that kept me guessing throughout. Heather is a terrific doctor, quick thinking, and compassionate, even with everything going on she always makes time to help others. Ex-military and the owner of his own security firm, Travis offers to help her get to the bottom of the disturbing events that seem to follow her. Travis is a kind and confident man, though he can be very hard on himself, I loved his supportive family and friends.

This book can stand well on its own, and I loved seeing Heather and Travis working together, and getting to know each other better. There is great relationship building and interaction between them, in this fast paced read. Ryker adds a great dynamic to the story as well, he is a clever young man, eager to help, not shying away from danger.

Overall, this is a highly entertaining read that kept me guessing all the way through, I loved seeing familiar faces from previous books in the series. Another amazing romantic suspense from Lynette Eason, doesn't disappoint!

This story starts us out with a brief look at a tour of duty for doctor Heather Fontaine and her friend Gina in Afghanistan. We next have Heather back home and going to her friend Brooke’s house, but she’s having 2nd thoughts due to someone somewhat stalking her. Her friends Brooke, Sarah, Ava, Gina, Travis, Gavin, Caden and Asher are all there and draw the story out of her. We also meet Ryker, Travis’s family, Doc Colson and a few others. Heather heads home after the party and realizes she needs to head right back out again. This story grabs you quick and doesn’t let up until the end. Page turning action and suspense leave us trying to piece together the pieces as we go. This is the first book I’ve read of this series and it does stand on its own.

This was a solid suspense read from Lynette Eason. After meeting Heather and Travis in the earlier books in this series, getting their story was super fun. The mystery was very good and the excitement level of the book kept a great pace and was a page turner. Heather and Travis's growing relationship was easy and believable and didn't move too fast which I appreciated. I really liked the addition of Ryker, he was a fun character that I'd like to see more of. This was a quick, easy and an enjoyable read. Looking forward to book 4 in the series later this year.

I couldn't put this book down! Lynette has really hit it out of the park with this series. Book 2 had me wondering how the rest of the series would play out, but I LOVED Book 3 and fell in love with Heather Fontaine.
Heather has a stalker, and despite always going it alone, she must learn to allow her friends to help keep her safe. Get ready for a book you cannot put down. This one goes SO quickly because it is full of twists, turns, and page turning suspense. Prepare yourself for explosions, car chases, gunshots, and kidnapping... and I think that's all in the first half! As always, Lynette so seamlessly weaves in a healthy dose of romance. This one helps keep the story moving with its sweetness, believability, and depth. Travis is such a steady leading man, and while I wished we'd have dug into his character a little more, not doing so gave us more time with Heather, which I think was essential to the storyline. Bravo, Lynette, for bringing us another grate story to enjoy and rave about.
While this book can be read as a stand alone, I always recommending reading Lynette's series in order so you can get a full grasp of the characters and surroundings.

Wonderfully well written suspense.
Dr. Heather Fontaine has returned from her stint in the military serving near Kabul. She has recurring nightmares of the young suicide bomber who asked for help before the bomb went off, cell phone activated. And, now she has a stalker.
Her group of friends want to help her, but Heather has learned from experience to trust no one. Can she open up enough to accept help?
One special friend, Travis, is there to help at every turn. He longs for a deeper relationship with the flighty Dr. and will do anything to keep Heather safe.
The final twists of the book surprised me, which is a good thing when I can’t guess the bad guy early on.
I strongly recommend this read if you like suspense!

Title: Active Defense
Author: Lynette Eason

Ch: 26

Pg: 288

Series: Danger Never Sleeps

Genre: Christian suspense with a hint of romance

Rating: 4.5 stars

Publisher: Revell

Active Defense is the third book in the Danger never sleeps by Lynette Eason. This one follows Heather Fountine a former army doctor and Travis Walker a security expert. Heathers got baggage in her past that Travis wants to help carry if she’ll let him.

This one was my favorite in series. Heather was the heroine that was the most stubborn a perfect match for Travis. That while Travis is a hero who wants to protect the heroine he does so while treating her life an equal. You don’t get that often enough in romantic suspense. Which brings up my other point that I love about Eason’s writing her novels are the majority suspense with only a hint of romance which is how I love my suspense novels. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Lynette Eason ALWAYS rates as a must-read author for me. Once I start a book she has written, I stay up way too late, and get little else done until I've finished. Active Defense, book 3 in her "Danger Never Sleeps" series, kept me guessing until the end.

Heather Fontaine's battle scars are mostly mental. As an Army field surgeon, she spent her time trying to save those whose bodies were torn apart by war. For her, though, it's the young suicide bomber she tried to save that she sees in her dreams. He did what he could to save the Army hospital he was sent to destroy, and she looked him in the eye as he did it. Saving his undamaged t-shirt was the only way she could memorialize the boy she couldn't save. Returning home, a YouTube video of her heroics in trying to save the young "terrorist" made her a celebrity. It also brought a stalker to her doorstep. Is she jumping at shadows, or does someone have her in their crosshairs?

Travis Walker, owner of a personal security firm, has the means and the desire to keep Heather safe. Seeing her fear mixed with her need to be independent, he keeps an eye out in secret, until he can't stay secret anymore. The danger follows Heather, no matter where she goes, Can they work together to find out who has placed a target on her back, before that person can make good on their attempts?

As I said, this one really kept me guessing. Just when I thought they had the person dead to rights, another attempt was made on Heather's life. The book was at something like 97% before the true villain was revealed! I liked the chemistry between Heather and Travis, and the super-strong friendships between all of the characters. This book brings back Brooke and Asher, from Colateral Damage, and Sarah and Gavin from Acceptable Risk. While it was fun to "catch up" with both couples, I believe this could also be read as a stand-alone. The reader just wouldn't know some of the friendship back story.

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense books. Eason is my personal top author in the genre. She has yet to write a book I haven't loved.

Active Defense by Lynette Eason

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Lynette Eason's third book in the Danger Never Sleeps series is a good read that is a bit different from the first two. This story spends more time in the US than in Afghanistan and I found that I liked it best that way. Heather Fontaine is finished with her medical tours overseas after the devastating happenings of her last deployment. A young boy died after being forced to wear a bomb vest onto the medical base and the nightmares and wariness from that time are still with Heather. And it also appears she has a "watcher"; a stalker that does nothing but watch her rather than approach. Who is it and what is so important about her? After a break-in at her home, Heather goes into hiding, using the skills she picked up in the military to disguise her path out. But her friends will not accept her silence and work to bring her back home. But Heather doesn't like to accept help, especially if it means that others might get hurt. Too bad Travis Walker doesn't take no for and answer. Travis is determined to help Heather solve this mystery and keep her safe. He is sure they would be a good fit together but it all depends on if Heather will let him close enough to help. She will need his help and his skills if she is going to come out of all this alive and catch those targeting her. I loved that there was lots of ongoing action interspersed with some good conversations. You really felt like this was happening right in front of you or that you were riding along on the adventure. Heather was a complicated character that grew well during the story and you really wanted to root for her. She was tough for a reason but had such a longing for belonging and family that she needed her friends and their connection. And her connection with Travis was good too. I liked that she and he both learned how not to assume about each other with each turning page. Their conversations dealt with everything from guilt to accepting help to finding love and really carried the story along well. The mystery included was written very well with plenty of twists and backturns that kept you guessing about the culprit. I did figure it out before the characters but that didn't take from the story for me. I will certainly be recommending this story to others as a very good read and a most excellent addition to the series. I'm excited to see who will be the next focus of this wonderful series!

I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Revell Publishing via NetGalley in order to provide a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

Active Defense, by Lynette Eason, will follow Heather Fontaine home from her time working as a field surgeon in Afghanistan. She cannot seem to shake the nightmares involving a young boy, who lost his life to a suicide bomb Once back stateside, the nightmares still haunt Heather; however, her trauma increases. Heather senses a person is stalking her, as well!

When Heather comes home and finds a picture of her friends with targets marked on their foreheads, she knows she must run. Heather does not want to expose her friends to any potential harm. However, in this tale full of action and danger around every corner, Heather cannot keep herself or her friends safe for long!

This story will have you turning page after page, as you attempt to put the pieces of this suspense together. It is definitely worth the read!

Active Defense is the third book in Eason's Danger Never Sleeps series. In this installment we get to learn more about Heather and Travis. Heather is a retired Army surgeon who grew up with an abusive father and is a product of the foster care system. Trusting others is not her thing but she comes to realization that she might just have to start trusting her friends when someone is out to harm her. Travis is in the security business and he will try his hardest to keep the woman he likes safe. The story takes some crazy twists and turns and by the end you are like, wait, what just happened. This one might be me favorite of the three and I just loved Ryker's addition to the story, boy was I rooting for that kid!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review. All spelling and grammar errors in this review are totally my own.

Heather Fontaine is a fiercely independent surgeon who has recently returned home from serving overseas. A product of an abusive father and the foster care system she has learned to do thinks on her own and above all protect those she loves from being harmed because of her.
Travis Walker, aka “Cowboy”, has his eye on the beautiful surgeon and considers her one of his best friends. When he discovers she’s left town without warning he’s determined to find her and keep her safe.
Eason takes her readers through all kinds of twists and turns as she navigates Heather and Travis’s story. She keeps us guessing and may make you wonder if you missed something as she bring the story to a close and you discover just who is after her and why.
I enjoy Lynette Eason’s writing and love being so wrapped up in her story I forget who’s the author of the story I’m engrossed in.
Thank you NetGalley and Revell for the opportunity to review this book!
