Lynette Eason keeps the reader guessing in Active Defense. The novel has good pacing, elements, of danger, and suspense. Travis as the hero and Heather as the heroine are enjoyable. Travis is a great protector-character. The story was meaty enough to hold my attention and had a good balance between the suspense and the romance.

I received the third book of this series (Active Defense) free to review. I enjoyed the third book because, by this point, I had gotten to know the characters and understand them a bit more. I was familiar with who they are and that always makes it more enjoyable to read. I love the variety of characters in this book and how the development of them is realistic and interesting.

I really enjoyed reading Lynette Eason's Active Defense. It is the continuing story of a group of friends who served together in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, life back in the 'States doesn't seem to be any safer. This is Dr. Heather Fointaine's story along with Travis Walker the man who is fascinated by her. This book is full of dialogue and plot twists. The suspense is amazing and will keep you reading past your bedtime.
So grab your favorite snacks and beverage and settle in for a suspenseful read.

I was given a copy of Active Defense by NetGalley.com with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.

Heather Fontaine knows split second decisions and intense situations. In one of those intense situations, she makes the split second decision to to use her skills as a military field surgeon try to save the life of a young man who was sent into the field hospital with a bomb strapped to his chest. This moment will change Heather's life in unimaginable ways, even after her discharge from the military and her return to civilian life.

Growing up with a volatile father and a string of foster placements that didn't work out taught Heather to rely on herself. Don't drag anyone down with you. Anyone who wants to help must have an ulterior motive. This philosophy is tested when Heather's friends find out that someone is stalking her. It gets even more real when she realizes that she has inadvertently put her friends in harm's way. Now, she has to find out who is doing this and stop them before anyone else gets hurt.

Taking no for an answer isn't going to work for Travis Walker. The security firm he owns allows the resources Travis needs to find the answers that will help him protect Heather and her friends, because her situation has escalated from stalking to kidnapping at an alarming pace. Someone has a problem with Heather, and that's a problem for Travis.

Lynette Eason is back with her third book in the Danger Never Sleeps series, continuing the stories of the friend group of patriots we've come to know as our own. The action flies as fast as the punches and flows in Eason's typical style. Of course, the pages fly and leave the reader longing for more at the end. I suppose that's a good thing, since Eason is slated to deliver book number four to her faithful readers in the future.

Thank you to the author and the publisher for allowing me a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions expressed here are my own and are completely genuine.

Dizzyingly fast-paced, this is another great addition to the series that is improving book by book (and I've enjoyed each title.) Perhaps the books themselves aren't improving, but my sense of intrigue continues to be piqued with each new addition. I ponder how such close friends can find themselves involved in such uniquely dangerous situations - it must be an anomaly - and yet, I can see past the unlikelihood of such a thing because the thrill, the mystery, the heart pumping, head-spinning fiction works! There are inklings of "who" or "what" sprinkled throughout although I will admit the first big reveal or why caught me off guard (hooray for surprises!) While those inklings are consistent, there are enough red herrings thrown into the mix to keep you doubting and waiting for the big a-ha! The characters are perfect in their imperfect humanity, struggling with issues of faith, trust, and even friendship.

Note to add, Ryker's secondary side-story brought the whole thing together for me and my heart broke (and cheered) for that kid!

Overall, an enjoyable read that thrums with jeopardy.

My thanks to the publisher for the complimentary copy of this title via NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

The Active Defense by Lynette Easton
This is not the first book I've read of Lynette Easton. Active Defense is the last book in the Danger Never Sleeps series. I haven't got around to read book one or two, but I feel that Active Defense is a stand alone. If you like a good suspense book, this will not let you down. it was a great page-turner and I love the characters especially the romance between Heather and Travis

Rating - I rate this book 5 out of 5 star's

Recommend - I will highly recommend to family, friends and others through Netgally, Amazon, my blog, book bud, Goodreads and Barnes and Noble.

Disclaimer - I received this complementary copy of the book from Revell and was under no obligation to write a positive review.

From the first chapter I knew I will love this one and I was not disappointed. This was filled with suspense and action, but also friendship, family and new beginnings. Lynette Eason kept me guessing right through out this story. Up to 49% I had no idea who it could be and then between that and 80% I probably changed my mind every minute and even though the person was a suspect, I was still surprised. If your favourite genre is suspense (like mine), you will love this book an series.

I loved Travis - it might be the cowboy thing - I think he was my favourite hero of the series so far. He was strong but also got hurt and it was funny that this big strong cowboy was afraid of doctors.

In this series, the author tackles difficult issues, and in this book it was abusive homes. The author handled this with sensitivity but also revealing what certain children unfortunately deal with. As a mom who goes tiger-crazy if someone just looks funny at my boys, I can't think how you can harm your own child.

Something else I loved about this book is too see a bit more of the friendship between the three guys.

I'm looking forward to the next book, but at the same time want to delay ending this series, which for me is one of the author's best to date. The author got the perfect balance between suspense, romance and dealing with deeper and emotional subjects.

Award-winning author Lynette Eason continues her fast-paced romantic suspense series featuring four women who served together in Afghanistan.

In Active Defense, former Army surgeon Heather Fontaine returns from Afghanistan to danger at home. Her South Carolina home is broken into, just as she returns from a party, and Heather thinks she is being stalked. Afraid that asking her friends for help would put them in danger, she disappears to a nearby small town. Heather thinks she can find safety there, but she is wrong. Fortunately Travis Walker, a private security professional, finds her and tries to protect her. Together they need to discover who is behind the attempts on her life. Will they find out the truth before it is too late?

As expected, Eason creates an action-packed story filled with faith elements, a clean romance, realistic characters, and a plot that will keep the reader guessing. As expected, violence is present (child suicide bomber, shootings, intentional car accidents, and a kidnapping, to name a few) but nothing graphic. The characters and storylines introduced in the earlier books continue in this book. The women in this series have shared experiences that build strong bonds of friendship even after their tour of duty is over.

Recommended for adult collections and fans of military romantic suspense, especially fans of Ronie Kendig, Susan May Warren, and Dani Pettrey. Watch for book 4, Hostile Intent, coming in Summer 2021.

I really enjoyed this book. There was no truly cliché ending, which is always a big bonus score to a romance book I’m reading. I bet this is because these events are being saved for future books in the series, which I appreciate. I’m totally going to have to go out and find the previous books, though this book does standalone well enough without its counterparts.

The main characters are sweet, kind, believable people. While I loved Heather, I only ‘didn’t mind’ Travis, but I think my ultimate favorite character was probably Ryker. That kid is a gem. By kid I mean 17-year-old young man.

Heather is a super believable and relatable character. Sure, she’s described as being a supermodel blonde with blue eyes and she’s a surgeon that served in the Middle East. But she hates exercise, promises never to set foot in a gym and does things a real person would do, like take the stairs at work and call it exercise to feel less guilty about not jogging 5km every day. This holds true whenever she has to run with amusing thoughts like cursing herself for never doing cardio and thinking that maybe she should put in some minimal effort to remedy her lack of endurance. She flat out confesses to hating nature and hiking and if she never ends up back in the bush it wouldn’t be a moment too soon. Her humor is totally on point.

Heather also has no TSTL moments. HUGE relief. The only person who has moments that make you wonder how he keeps his company afloat is actually Travis. Like…wow dude, you do this for a living and you keep messing it up??? This is probably why I only ‘didn’t mind’ him. Nice guy, but author uses him to take the hits to move the plot forward, but also make Heather look a heck of a lot smarter for managing to save herself.

Lynette Eason has a perfect balance of religion in this book. She makes her characters faith shine through without making you feel like she’s preaching at you. I only counted one classic, groan worthy, “with some divine help” speech, but it was short. So that’s pretty fantastic. The rest of the time it’s as natural as an actual person with their faith.

My only really issue with this book is that I feel like to most exciting part of the book happened in and around the midway point. While the mystery of who wanted Heather dead is enough to pull you through all the way to the end, I found the ending less exciting then the halfway point action. Tiny bit of a let down.

Conclusion?

All in all this book was pretty good! I’m so glad I got to read it and would probably recommend it to anyone who wants a light mystery/suspense romance to read.

Eason had me from the very first page. I didn’t want to stop reading, and had no clue what could possibly happen next. I had met Heather and Travis earlier in this series, but felt like I got to know them a lot better in this book. I could understand Heather’s need to be in control, and when someone put her friends in danger she did what she knows how to do: run and hide. Little does she know her friends know her, and aren’t going to let her fight alone. Travis has a special interest in her, and it doesn’t hurt that he knows how to protect someone without being seen. Will Travis find out who’s after Heather before it’s too late? I love reading a novel and having no clue who the villain could be. Eason had me guessing and took me by complete surprise. I can’t wait to see what she writes next! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. I loved seeing the deep friendships the group shared, and that their love for each other overcame many obstacles. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was eager to begin this story, as Lynette Eason has long been one of my favorite authors of suspense. Though I have learned to make sure I have a block of time and that it’s not right before bed when I start a new one of her stories, otherwise, I might not sleep! Or get anything else done, with my mind trying to puzzle out what's going to happen next.
As always, Ms. Eason kept me guessing and racing to the finish, wondering what would happen next and how everything would play out in the end. I've been greatly enjoying getting to know the characters in this series, Heather and Travis definitely not being an exception! I also loved that characters from the previous books had more than a cameo in the story. Reading this one made me want to go back and reread the rest of the series, as well as her other books!
I would say that my one negative comment is that I found the villain's reasoning behind everything a little shallow and it didn't seem to make sense with the severity of crimes committed. But it did allow the author to drive some points home regarding bitterness and not allowing circumstances to define you. I don’t want to say much more on that, due to possible spoilers.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am anxiously awaiting what might be the final book in the series, though I definitely don’t want to wish for time to pass any more quickly than it already is!

Good plot, less well written. I generally like Lynette Eason’s books, but this one less so. The story begins in Afghanistan when heather tries to save the life of a young bomber. He dies but his story does not die.

Heather, back in America, begins to be followed by a stalker. And her life begins to be threatened with home invasions, car wrecks, and kidnappings. It would take the combined work of Heather and her friends to discover the truth behind it all. In the process Heather will need to learn to trust and depend on others. She is not on her own, but it will take effort to overcome her past.

Sadly, the first ⅔ of the book are a bit slow-going; the last third picks up speed and becomes a more satisfying read. Was the book worth my time - yes, but it took a while to get there. The book barely gets 4-stars.

In this latest release, readers will continue in this exciting series by Ms. Eason. This book focuses on Heather who has returned from active duty after witnessing a horrific act in Afghanistan. Right from the start, readers discover that she believes she has a stalker. She cannot figure out why someone seems to be following her. In order to protect her friends, she goes into hiding. One of her friends, Travis, is determined to find her at all costs and protect her. As the head of his security business, he has the skills and means to protect her. He is friends with her, but wants to be more. Together they are on a race to determine who is after her and why. This is book three in this series and readers will be updated on characters from the previous books. I can’t wait for the final book in this series that releases in August! Ms. Eason’s writing just gets better and better with every release. I highly recommend this book and know you will not be disappointed!

Active Defense
by Lynette Eason
Book 3 in the Danger Never Sleeps series
Rating: 4.5/5

Who doesn't enjoy a good romantic suspense novel? As a long-time fan, I was excited to get back into the world with some familiar characters and get to know them better. This story can definitely be read as a standalone novel (I somehow skipped reading book 2, but I did read book 1), but I recommend starting from the beginning to get the full effect. I, myself, need to go back and read book 2. You will not regret it.

Heather Fontaine is dealing with PTSD after her service in Afghanistan as a field surgeon. She thinks someone is stalking her, and she is on edge all the time. After she finally shares her fears with her friends, she arrives home to find her house is not quite the way she left it. Fleeing and trying to disappear to protect her friends from an unknown adversary prove to be difficult when Travis Walker, owner of his own security firm, is able to find her and save her. Who is watching her? Who just tried to kill her? She has so many questions and not enough answers. Can Travis and her friends help Heather uncover what is going on? Will Heather's emotional baggage and traumatic past keep her from pursuing a relationship with the seemingly perfect Travis? Can Travis really protect Heather and keep her safe?

As a medical student, I always love reading stories (even fictional ones) about doctors in the field. Heather's past is what has shaped her character and is part of what drives her passion to help others. I loved the part where Heather explained how she turned out the way she did despite poor role models -- she just did the opposite of what she saw her father do. I definitely cried some tears and felt my adrenaline pumping at different points in the story. Heather's relationship with Travis was a bit rushed, but it may have been developed more in book 2. Their relationship was not as obvious in the beginning of the story. The big reveal at the end was something I did not see coming until the author made it clear, which is always impressive since I'm constantly guessing throughout the story. Faith is gently woven into the story - definitely not in a preachy way.

Highly recommend this Christian romantic suspense novel that will keep you reading till the end with action, intrigue and a lot of heart.

My thanks to the publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

While most of Lynettes books keep me entertained the whole way through, this set of books has been a little more disjointed than the others. I think it is because I am not a huge fan of the plots of this series. However, they are still very good stories to read and have enjoyable characters. This one is set both oversees as well as in the United States. Heather and Travis together are very likable main characters. The book does have some twists and turns that keep you on your seat and wanting to find out what happens next.

I appreciate that even though this does have Christian parts, they are not preachy and they jive with the story.

Overall entertaining read. 4 stars

Active Defense by Lynette Eason is the main reason my Christmas tree is still up in January. This is the second time an Eason book has delayed festive decor removal. My husband now throws me ‘the face’ when he sees her name on my wish list. The face communicates “got it. I’ll be taking up the household slack until the killer is caught.”

And this time isn’t any different. Once again, Eason is at the very top of her game. From the opening scene of this book I was gripped. The characters reel you in and then worry you with their personal safety. In this book we meet former military surgeon Heather Fontaine who shot to fame after a clip of her fighting to save an apparent suicide bomber attracts some unsavory attention.

Thankfully, security firm owner Travis Walker is keeping an eye on Heather and as the two work together from the seclusion of his family ranch, Heather’s ingrained refusal to allow anyone to get too close falters.

Can Travis win her heart before the killer stops it? This book is another complete winner from this author and despite being book three in a series works well as a standalone novel too. Highly recommended.

Active Defense, by Lynette Eason, is the third in the Danger Never Sleeps series but, whilst I loved the previous two, it works as a standalone novel too. Our leading lady is a military doctor home after a traumatic incident. Quickly she realises she’s attracted a stalker and, to protect her friends, she disappears to a “safe” location. Our leading man and friend to Heather, Travis, uses his resources in private security as well as his friendships with law enforcement to find and protect Heather.

Soon, the two find themselves fighting against more than a one man stalker and trying to ascertain what the motive behind it all is. As in every Lynette Eason, this is a fast-paced action-orientated story but I love the heart she built into Heather, she has created a woman who is easy to relate to and caring toward all those who the stumble across in their journey.

Backed by Travis’ team, their investigation takes many unexpected and interesting turns before it’s satisfying ending! Whilst I pieced some of it together, as I love to do, I didn’t get all of it! I so enjoyed this adventure and highly recommend it! It’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale!

“It’s time to use some of those military skills you’ve got that will allow us to work smarter, not harder.”

Wow…Lynette Eason knows how to write a thrilling, romantic suspense with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. From beginning until the very end, I was riveted by these characters and the mystery of this story. Settled at home after completing her time in the military, surgeon Heather Fontaine realizes she has a stalker. However, her extremely independent nature keeps her from asking for help. She tries to disappear to stay safe and she wants to protect her friends, too. I was a little frustrated with how much she pushed her friends away, but I could relate with not wanting to put anyone in danger if I was in her shoes. I loved seeing her faith stretched and how much she grew in this story.

“Once again, she placed one foot in front of the other, begging God to protect her.”

We’ve met her band of friends in the earlier books (Danger Never Sleeps series). They have great camaraderie and would do anything to help each other. I related to the depth of their friendships, being prior military myself. So, when Travis Walker and this band of friends step into help, I enjoyed their dedication to helping a friend be safe. Travis was the swoony kind of guy who stole my heart in this book. He was protective, but I really appreciated how much he respected and helped Heather as a friend. She was smart and beautiful, but struggled trusting others. I appreciated seeing them work together, not only with the mystery, but also in their relationship. There was emotional baggage that they had to work through, but I was enamored with how well they handled it. Eason has a great way of drawing faith into the struggles of her characters, which really brings them to life for her readers.
If you love a good romantic mystery, I can highly recommend Active Defense. It could be read as a standalone pretty easily, but I’ve enjoyed how the whole series ties in with this group of friends. I think this is my favorite book so far, too. It was a rollercoaster ride of suspense for sure!

The perfect combination of thrilling suspense, romance and surprise! Lynette Eason keeps readers suspended in the mystery and fast-paced action of Active Defense, the third book in her Danger Never Sleeps series. With heroic, captivating characters and a plot that will keep you guessing, she delivers another great read in a series that just keeps getting better. From the heart-pounding opening to the surprising twists and turns, this story kept me engaged, entertained and on the edge of my seat. I could not put it down!

Having read the other two books in this series, I found Active Defense to be my favorite so far. The ending completely surprised me which was a fantastic bonus and speaks to how well written this particular story is.

Eason does an excellent job of balancing suspense, romance, faith and strong characters in her books and as a result, I highly recommend this series to those enjoy romantic suspense and thrillers by other authors like Dani Pettrey, Susan May Warren or Ronie Kendig.

Well, I was a bit slow getting around to reading this one, because I had to reread the first two in the series first before reading it, and that felt like a massive commitment, but since it’s out now, I thought I’d better get on to it!

I’m going to be honest, in some ways it was the best of the series, and in others, it wasn’t. In terms of storytelling it was just as good as the other two, if not better, and just as high-octane, but I felt it was a lot more predictable! I worked out who was behind it all pretty quickly! So the big reveal was a little anticlimactic for me... but the journey to get to the reveal & the characters more than made up for it. The plot was complex and well thought out & the characters deep and multi-faceted. Even though I’d worked out who the ‘puppet-master’ was, I was still kept on the edge of my seat by the twists and turns the story took! And as far as the characters are concerned, I think Heather and Travis might be her most well-developed characters of the series so far! Travis has personality that leaps off the page, and Heather’s story, in particular, is fascinating & her journey to learning to allow others to help her is something we could all learn from.

Despite the predictability, I still think it’s one of her best! So if you’re a Lynette Eason fan or even just a romantic suspense fan - go get it now!

Thanks so much to @revellbooks and @netgalley for the review copy! I was only required to provide an honest review in return.
