This is very different to the usual mystery books I read. The characters are quirky, to say the least, and the setting is unusual. I really liked it - it is different but just as satisfying as the more run of the mill mysteries on the market.

It all started with an apparent bar fight that led to a mutilated body and a police investigation. It moved on to due diligence by a pair of homicide detectives as well a separate deep investigation by a motivated surfer dude reporter who wanted to get into more serious work (and was assisted by a more savvy reporter on the dying paper). The homicide was somewhat unprovable for legal purposes, but all the rabbit holes and mazes kept coming back to a lot of fraud and other shady dealings by property developers and others with an eye on the prize of a NFL stadium being built on Sultan Road. The more the two separate investigations dig, the scope of the tangle worsens even though they do give out some tidbits to each other in the name of justice. No spoilers. This is a truly riveting story that is so much better than the stuff on TV.
