A fifty-something woman looking for The One after two failed marriages. So, she tries online dating, and, oh, the trials, tribulations, goofs, and outrageous behavior of some of those matches. I laughed so hard at times that I had to put my phone down until I could catch my breath again. But, like I have done, she finally comes to the realization that Time will make things work out the way it’s supposed to (or, as her children say, organically). This story is a good reminder to those of us that are still single, in our later years, that things will happen in their own time, you just have to wait for it to come about.
This was a great, entertaining story, and I hope to see more from this author in the future.

I love the idea of an MC that is a woman over 50. I just wish Jessie, our protagonist, had been more open to embracing her age. The opening scene gives you a taste of what is to come but then for nearly 30% of the book she talks about her exes. In my opinion, this took way too long. It slowed the story down and made it feel like forever until she actually starts dating. Once the dates begin it was one horror story after another. I felt bad that she struggled so much but felt like she wasn’t realistic in her approach to dating. She made the same mistake of falling too quickly over and over again. She lacks a backbone and keeps giving in to what other wants from her. It still felt like I was reading a story about a 20 something on the dating scene. Actually, it seemed like her kids knew a lot more than Jessie. Wasn’t a fan of the gay bf trope as it has been done to death and only seemed there to further the plot. Jessie does seem to grow, it just takes a while.
All her experiences, whether good or bad, help shape and give a clearer picture of what she wants from life. I just wish she came on to the dating scene honest about herself from the beginning.

I just couldn't get behind this book. It felt very flat to me, I didn't connect with any of the characters. I got the feelings but I didn't feel anything, it made sense, kind of. At first it was so difficult to read because you get the sense of how she got where she is now. It was very confusing and very weird how the problems presented and the men just left. I thought it would be more of getting on the dating pool again and learning to love herself, and it kind of was, but it took very long to get there. For me, this didn't work.

This was a book I should have been able to relate to— like the main character I am in my 50’s with 2 children, divorced, remarried and then single again. The story chronicles in brief chapters how she got to that point and then is the story of her moving on, dating and changing jobs. I did not feel any emotion in the writing. If a dog does in a book, I should be able to feel it in my heart, right? The storytelling fell flat for me. I am sorry to leave a bad review but I was given an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If someone asked me to describe this book in one word, I would say: nice. If you’re asked to describe a person and you use nice, it usually means you like them, but they’re also kinda boring. That’s how I felt about this book. There were so many things I genuinely liked, but it was such a snoozefest to actually read. Which is such a disappointment because the plot had so much potential to be funny and engaging.

Jessica, the main character and voice of this book, was such a sweet character. She felt like a real person, someone I could see myself as if God-forbid I ended up in her situation.

The first quarter of the book was all about her two marriages; how they started, what they were like and how/why they ended. It was rather dull and sadly, didn’t get much better from there. It was very information heavy, a lot of details about random things that didn’t even matter for the story. Frequently throughout the book she’d start reminiscing about something from the past and then within the same paragraph, without warning, it jumps back to what she’s doing presently and it became so jarring.

One thing I liked was the inclusion of her dog, Penny. One thing that was well written was the small sentences about where the dog was and what she was doing. It helped give the book a homely feel, which is another thing I liked, was how comfortable the setting was.

The book is described as funny. I spent a lot of time while reading the book wondering what was suppose to be funny. The dates Jessica went on weren’t funny, more odd or sad. She spent a lot of time either going through the motions just to get through an uncomfortable date or becoming overly invested in a guy, only to have him ditch her days or weeks later.

During the last quarter of the book there were a lot of sex scenes and I wasn’t prepared for how in depth they went. I understood there was going to be sex in the book, it is about dating after all, but I wish it were more scattered and a little less detailed. It felt out of character for Jessica.

The ending had a few sad moments that made me tear up and the very end was sweet but predictable. While it was fun to read a book where the protagonist isn’t in her teens or twenties, I probably wouldn’t recommend this book unless you’re really into romance and you’re not fussy with what you read.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this book. This book was a change from the average adult book, focusing on an older character rather than younger. I enjoyed the change in age and perspective of this story. If you are looking for a funny feel good book I definitely reccomend this. overall 4/5 stars.

☆☆☆☆☆ YAY! My first five star read of 2021! ☆☆☆☆☆

I loved this book SO much. I felt like I was reading Jessica's diary. She was such a refreshing character, of a certain age....like me and I could relate to this story SO much. This book made me feel so many emotions. It was sad, happy, funny and Jessica was so resilient and independent...There was even lots of sexy time and it felt so authentic.

I love how the book was open ended. The reader can decide for themselves if it end happily ever after or not. I am hoping it mean they're may be a book two as I would be so into that! Needless to say, if Jessica were real...I'd like to be her friend. All. The. Stars.

A woman in her 50s trying to get back into dating? Yes, please! As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew I wanted to read this novel and I have no regrets. While not myself that age, I enjoy reading about heroines in their middle age. We will all get there one day! And sometimes I like to read about someone who has life experience and not a young adult who... does not. That aside, the book is a lot of fun. The men Jessica dates range from disgusting to funny to wtf and I think many of us have been there, no matter what age we are. Another thing I loved is the way her children are supportive and also still trying to find The One (or The One For Right Now). Dating might seem easier at one age or another but you can struggle at any age!
The reason Jessica and her second husband break up are not some cheating scandal or anything that's stereotypical. It feels real and something people, I feel, can relate to. There were points when the dating adventures seemed to get boring. Very enduring, albeit a bit exhausting, is Jessica's tendency to get attached way too soon. But in the end this works out so perfectly. I foresaw the ending for a while and to be honest, was waiting for it to happen, and kept wondering why it didn't, but when it did, it was like, yes. This is why. Sometimes you have to go through all that shit to get to that one moment, as small as it may seem.

A funny and relatable read. Anyone who has experienced online dating later in life will relate to Jessica as she struggles to weed out the weirdos from the Go Fish pool.

I particularly enjoyed the family dynamic in this novel, and this is a constant throughout. I have rarely read books with a main character in this age group, and I found her relationships with her adult children different and refreshing. There are plenty of other quirky characters sprinkled in too, not to mention the seemingly unending stream of daters.

Jessica herself is a likeable character, flawed in a way which felt real, and I rooted for her all the way through, though I was thoroughly unprepared for the last few chapters. Make sure you have tissues!

All in all, an enjoyable book. I will look out for more from this author.

I couldn't finish it. It was so hard to get into even though I really tried. It just jumped around so much that I just couldn't make myself care. Had the potential to be really fun, but I just couldn't handle it anymore.

This book was like a cake recipe
A cup full of humour
A few table spoons of dirty talk
And a pinch of heartbreak.

It was really good. And the author did a fantastic job with making the reader feel all the emotions. Will definitely be looking for more books by Cari Scribner

I had a hard time with the timeline of this novel. The narrator goes back and forth in time. I also had an issue with the plot of the book. It was very anticlimactic and felt almost like a fake memoir. It did have a couple of funny moments, but I wish it was building up to something better.

It disappoints me so much when I don’t like a book, but this is one that I honestly did not like. I had a very hard time being engaged with it in the beginning and it was a challenge to keep my focus.

I enjoyed the stories of her online dating escapades but after awhile they just got tiring. The ending with her dog felt so random and out of place. I liked the very ending part of it but that’s about it honestly.

This book i gave a lot of thought in how to review it because although it was funny and interesting it just didn't click with me. Maybe in a few more years I get some of the struggles of our main girl but it was hard for me to related.
Now I do recommend this book for a good laugh and again interesting plot and characters that make this a very enjoyable book.

I enjoyed this story of a woman in her 50's navigating her newly single life. It reads like one big story, but each chapter has a mini story within it. It feels a tiny bit "Sex in the City" because of the way it's written. I wound up really liking the main character and was rooting for her to find happiness in her life. There are some vivid sex scenes- so beware if that's not your thing! Overall, I liked this book and would read a book by this author again.

I’m not sure how I feel about this book- it just didn’t click with me. Fairly well written in parts I just found it a little odd.

Cari Scribner’s debut chronicles the dating misadventures of a 57-year old Jessica in evocative, sometimes painful, detail. Having just barely survived the dissolution of her long term first marriage by throwing herself heart first into a new one, Jessica is heartbroken and shaken when the second fails as well in less than five years. Love, loss, and resilience are familiar themes for women’s fiction, but A Girl Like You is also shot through with shades of a grittier, more mature Sex and the City. Call it Sex outside the City or Sex and the small town. Although the contours of her situation are familiar, however, the characters, observational humor about the way we live now, and frank, sometimes graphically detailed sexual exploration, feel fresh. 3.5 stars.
