Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a well written and researched book. It captures the current and past state of public schools as society and politicians have a never ending fight of privatizing public schools. It's sad how politicians have made this into a political issue when it should be a no brainer that the better educated a society the better it functions.

A realistic look at how the education system is not set up for the needs of all Americans and how it is routinely set up to fail.

Terrifying and engrossing.

As a high school social studies teacher from Michigan, I was acutely aware of Betsy DeVos and her damaging appointment as Secretary of Education. It is one thing to just complain about the educational system as a teacher, but is is another to actually inspect and understand its inner workings. This book does a great job in providing the context necessary to understand how we got here.

As an education professional, I was interested in this take on the future of education. The picture painted here is even more dire given the pandemic.

All in all, having read this book I feel horrified but so much more aware of the plot against public education.

"A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door" by Jack Schneider and Jennifer Berkshire is about the simultaneous unraveling and privatization of public school in America. As a former public school teacher and a firm believer in teachers' unions and high-quality public education, the facts contained in this book about the changes in public education are appalling. In no other areas of public life are Republicans, and even some Democrats, so intent on giving away money than they are when it comes to the privatization of K-12 education. This book also includes some discussion about the thievery of for-profit higher education institutions. This book highlights how there really is zero to be gained from the unraveling of public education. Definitely an important read.

This is a very informative read about the issues affecting our school system. The issues are plentiful and the authors give each one the attention it deserves in this book. As someone that works in a public school, I can attest that these are not unrealistic facts. Our school system is failing and we need to take action.

Honestly, I don’t really get this book. I am by no means a scholar so may not be the target audience but it was confusing. I think I have learnt a lot about American schools which was incredibly interesting but I don’t understand what the wolf at the schoolhouse door is? Is Betsy DeVos a villain or hero? I’m aware it’s nonfiction haha but I can’t tell where she stands. Although, I have learnt lots about the education system in America and it’s many problems. There is a lot of focus on charter schools which are debated and very confusing as they fit multiple boxes but I think after reading this book my knowledge was expanded greatly and I really understand the problems of the system. It is somewhat confusing and follows the same points but does expand on problems lots which is good.
