This actually wasn't badly written, but I had a hard time really connecting with the characters and the story. Elias is a good example. He exists only to push the plot forward, and his character tends to shift voice a lot. I couldn't connect with him, because he was a tool for the writer to make the MC's true love more substantial and create some friction and suspense. It failed though, because it was so obvious. He got far more screen time than necessary. Ness self-loathes throughout pretty much the whole story, which I can sort of understand, but she was really young when Kirk died, and she had like 20+ years to reflect with the help of Nolan to understand how he had abused her. People react to trauma differently, but this was just hard to swallow.

This book touts itself as a high fantasy. It isn't. It's a paranormal romance with a shallow plot and an obvious end-game.

If you were looking for sex, it exists but isn't explicit. There are sensual undertones throughout, but nothing really comes to fruition if you are looking for something more R/X-rated.

All told, I didn't hate it. Which I know is a really weak endorsement, but it really wasn't bad. It was a quick read, and it was mostly enjoyable, just easy to pick apart its flaws.

I felt like I was missing some background info. It didn’t grab me from the beginning, like I thought it would based on the description.
