When I first started this book, I was very dissappointed. I had expected an entirely different storyline based on the cover. It was much less si-fi/futuristic than I had hoped it would be and I needed some time to get into the book.
I prefered Penny's POV over Sarah's. Sarah was a rather annoying character and I could not really warm up to her. This changed near the end, though, but I still liked Penny more.
Something which annoyed me as well was the untranslated Japanese words. I do not speak Japanese. I know some words in Japanese, but that is all. A simple glossar at the end where the words and translations would have been listed - would that have been too much? I clearly would have profited from it.
I can't say much about the plot because it did not exactly feel like one. There was so much telling throughout this book, I was bored out of my mind and I caught myself skimming the pages. Especially the Sarah-chapters.
Near the end, however, the book started to peak my interest which is why I actually end up giving the book three stars.

I received a free copy by Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, this book just was not for me.. Much of the story is simply descriptions of the setting in a matter-of-fact way that does not enhance nor advance the story. The characters lack depth. That said, this world is creative and interesting; an alternate United States after WW2 where the atomic bombs were never dropped. A technologically advanced society with robot cops, ballon drones, and mechanically enhanced citizens. Give me a narrative driven story rather than excessive, boring descriptions of the environment and I would be all for it.

I received this advanced readers copy in an honest review. Thank you NetGalley.
