This is the first volume in the series and a good start. We are introduced to a witch who seems to be kind and the saviuor of her town, but is she. When two mysterious characters arrive in the town everything is turned upside down as we are introduced to the beast. I think this started slow but it soon gained momentum and is actually quite an engaging story. The art work is good too.

What I liked most:

* The drawing style
* Supernatural creatures
* A badass female character (Guideau)

What I liked least:

* I need more information. I've found kind of lost sometimes. And I also need to know a bit more about the main characters, so I can really say if I like them or not/empathize with them.
* Witches are the bad ones

The story is about two particular characters, Guideau and Ashaf who work for The Order of Magical Resonance. Guideau wants to find the witch that cursed her, in order to break this curse and take revenge by killing the witch. So she partners up with Ashaf and go after the malevolent creatures that are behind the gruesome acts in different places. Most of the time they're witches. In the end, they're sent to deal with a witch who's murdering people with abominable cruelty.

Wow, that was crazy AMAZING!! I'm so happy for this discovery. This manga is so cool, I love it and I just want more about Guideau and Ashaf. That story was impressive and the moment with the coffin I was just fangirling.

Guideau is cursed because of a witch that she ignores the identity, so to find her, she is hunting all the witches in order to break the curse. This is like fullmetal Alchemist but differently better and with top magic and mystery. e can't say more because it will spoil this good story.

Also, I loved the slogan of The Order of Magical Resonance for whom the two protagonists are working for "Our group works by magic, for magic, and of magic" it could be cool on a T-shirt.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the copy of The Witch and the Beast volume 1. This is a voluntary review.

The Witch and the Beast has an alluring storyline: two people arrive to town looking for a witch, one with a coffin on his back. As the story progresses we see why they are looking for witches, but we don’t know much about the characters yet. We see some fantastic fighting scenes and magic use, but there isn’t that much background to connect the levels of magic, or if there are different types, how the characters met etc. I am intrigued by the plot line as I want to find out more, and am hoping it doesn’t become one of the shallow fantasy series that fall out for me.

From the very first pages of The Witch and the Beast, the thing that stands out the most is by far the gorgeous artwork. The first couple of pages are in glorious colour, which you can see for yourself on Kodansha’s website here. Without the colour though the detail is so great that you can’t help but stare at the images. The example to the right was one of the first pages that made me ‘wow’ out loud – look at the crazy detail right down to the monsters rows of teeth! The example later on in this post is just as impressive, you can see depth right down to some of the smallest of petals.

These are both from our main characters’ first encounter with a witch, and it’s an action-packed ride to get you invested in their story.

So, we have Ashaf and Guideau. As the synopsis itself states, Ashaf is a soft-spoken man and he’s also very level-headed throughout, being meticulous in how he approaches situations. If you’re here for sass, then that’s Guideau. She’s stuck under a curse and that makes her more than a little annoyed, whenever something is sensed by her she pretty much just charges straight into the situation headfirst without thinking – making the two of them a pretty enjoyable pair to witness on the whole.

‘STOP WHINING ABOUT A BUNCH OF CRAZY NONSENSE. IF YOU WANT REVENGE, JUST TAKE IT.’

Honestly, Guideau is most definitely my favourite so far. When they aren’t in the middle of fights she just oozes stubbornness and coolness simultaneously.

In the world, these two are kind of like mercenaries for hire when it comes to magical issues. Ashaf is content with any job, just glad to help out wherever he can (he’s very cute like that) but Guideau is pretty much unhappy unless she’s chasing down a witch. It makes sense though, Guideau is locked out of her true form due to a witch and, unless a knight on a white horse gives her true love’s kiss, she won’t be able to break it unless she finds the one witch who did it to her and gets her to undo it.

Without giving too much away, they end up on a job which does involve a witch but it’s steeped in mystery – with no one being able to even catch sight of the witch.

The fact that there’s clearly so much more to this job just makes me want the second volume already, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! With the books themselves looking beautiful, I don’t think I’ll be able to stop myself from collecting the physical volumes.

Based on the cover and the description, I expected more of a 'The Beauty and the Beast' type of story. Oh boy, was I wrong.

It's hard to talk about this manga without spoiling the first chapter, but in general, it's about revenge and using magic to fight criminals. It's era-less setting makes it even more mysterious and the style is BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, every character is pretty and every background is detailed and gorgeous. The manga is also quite brutal, so be careful if you're sensitive in that department.

The volume contains one and a half stories — and I say that, because one arc is finished, the other ends on a cliffhanger. The first story offers some introduction to the characters and their backgrounds, and a lot of shocking reveals. The second is another case that will probably end with more shocking reveals in the next volume.

When it comes to the characters, I loved their chemistry — especially Ashaf making fun of Guideau. I also liked their gender ambiguity — Ashaf is a soft-spoken man with delicate features and Guideau is a feral girl, but only most of the time.

All in all, it was a strong 5-star manga and I'm looking forward to the next volumes.

The storyline is solid and intriguing and I found myself thoroughly entertained by Kousuke Satake's art and story balance. Fans of fantasy and military/detective manga will probably enjoy "The Witch and the Beast".

Ashaf and Guideau are members/employees of the "Order of Magical Resonance" a group that it works "By Magic, for Magic and of Magic".

Most of the manga plays off the fairytale ideas of witches and its primary goal in this first volume, apart from introducing the protagonists, is to establish that while Magic plays a huge part of this world, not everyone can weld it even if they are affected by Magic. There is a fine line drawn between the uses of Magic in a militarised sense and the struggles of those who come into contact with it especially in the form of witches.

As this is only the first volume of "The Witch and the Beast" I did come out with lots more questions than answers. However, I am looking forward to seeing how this world expands and am crossing my fingers for an anime because this is a manga I see translating well into animated form.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for allowing me to read a review copy of "The Witch and the Beast" all opinions stated are my own.

This is my first ever Manga that I've read.

I liked the premise of the story. It was entertaining and it had me engrossed from beginning to end.

The diagrams are black and white but there's so much detail in them that it just catches the eye.

It was a quick read and im happy its now serialized rather than a one shot.

I recieved an e-arc of this from netgalley for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved the art style of this, it was really pretty and well done. The fight scenes were entertaining and the plot was flowing with each chapter.

I liked our main characters, Guideau, who is a sparky, fight first ask questions later (if ever), and Ashaf, who seems to be the level headed person who keeps Guideau in check. Their relationship and banter are good and I enjoyed reading about them.

I'm excited to see where the story goes in the next book!
