Carmen is an introvert and avid nature lover who lives in the Spanish countryside with her family. Her parents are moving to the city and hire Gaudi, a creative designer and architect to remodel the house. What follows is a beautiful soft story about art, design, and reassurance that life holds surprises. Gorgeous colored illustrations, a new set of cultural thoughts to explore, and great facts at the end of the book really push this book to the top!

Such a beautiful imaginative story based on a real home in Barcelona and the family who moved there. This illustration style is my absolute favorite. I'm not quite sure what you would exactly call it, but I've seen similar illustrations and it grabs me every single time. There's something about these earth tones and full-page spreads that just captivate you into the story. I enjoyed everything about this story, although, I do believe based on the sentence structure and word choice that this would be for slightly older children. Even if reading aloud, I do think younger children might not grasp the story as well. Regardless, it was an absolute gem and I really loved having the opportunity to read this and simultaneously learn more about Gaudi and the Batlló family.

Thank you to NetGalley and Owlkids for an eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A gorgeous, magical introduction for children to Antoni Gaudi's architecture. The story follows Carmen, an imaginative girl who loves to explore and the house that is ultimately built for her parents by Gaudi. I loved how we view Gaudi from Carmen's eyes and see that he has retained childlike imagination and interest in the natural world and incorporates it into his work as a visionary architect. Following the story, beautiful pictures and biographical text give the reader information about his life and architectural contributions. I highly recommend this gorgeous picture book!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

Carmen and the House that Gaudi Built is a delightful journey in history. The simple story about discovery was weaved beautifully into a tale of growing up and understanding change. The main character grapples with the fears and uncertainty that comes from moving to a new place. This story is accented by a whimsically illustrated tale of the architect Gaudi. I loved the book and I'm happy to be able to share it with my own children and my classroom.

Wonderful story based on a gem of a house in Barcelona built by creative genius Antonio Saudi. The house is real while the story of Carmen and her salamander is imagined. The illustrations do justice to the beauty of the house design. Lovely, truly lovely!

With organic and playful illustrations, this book tells the story of a girl facing change and it not being what she expected. She finds a kindred spirit and a place to live out her imagination. Based on a true story of Casa Batllo and Antoni Gaudi that designed it, this book is beautiful in form and story.
