This book was well-written and very entertaining. I love that it is part of a series because that means there will be more to read with these characters!

A mystery thriller set in 1928. Fast paced with plenty of suspects. Our novel focuses on Penelope Harris who has returned to New York after living in Shanghai. Suddenly her past starts to catch up to her and before she knows it, herself and her loved ones are suspects.
Some parts I did find a bit choppy with some of the dialogue and sentences written as there were quite a few points where someone would say something and repeat themselves which did not further the plot line. As well as some parts that were over described.
It was an interesting view point from the 1920’s where it covers the impact of the tabloids, the alcohol prohibition as well as the law enforcement of that time.
It was a good read though I am unsure if I would be rushing out to buy a second in the series.

A feel good, old-fashioned murder mystery that had me racing through the pages in anticipation and in nostalgia. The 1930 USA is a delight to read about. Loved the writing and the pace which keeps the readers completely hooked. The suspense is held well till the end. I can’t wait to read more from the series now!

Loved getting to know what happens to Penelope, Renee, and Lund in this book. It was engaging up until the end of the book. Kept me reading on and wanting to know more of who had really done it and why? Would definitely re-read again!

I knew from the blurb that I was going to enjoy The Jade Tiger by E.W. Cooper. 1928, the roaring twenties, New York, jazz clubs, Shanghai casinos, mystery, blackmail, deceit and murder. What’s not to like?

The story follows Penelope, a former Opera singer and casino owner, recently arrived in NYC after the death of her husband in Shanghai and the scandal that followed. When her blackmailer - the treacherous Renee is murdered and Penelope’s old flame, Thom is accused of the crime she must run against time to prove his innocence and capture the real murderer.

The Jade Tiger was a fun, whodunit romp of a read with enjoyable characters and a great atmospheric feel. Hoping this is just the first installment. Looking forward to Penelope’s next adventure.

This was not what I thought it was going to be at all. The mystery of it was very lacking for me and I felt like it didn't stick to one certain theme within the mystery genre which created the lackluster appeal.

This was an intriguing mystery for me. The writing is very atmospheric of 1928 New York and I appreciate the research that went into the crafting of the plot. There are elements of mystery, romance, and murder. It is fast paced and entertaining. I’m looking forward to reading more about Penelope.

Excellent book! This book kept me reading and I was intrigued by all the layers of the story as they unfolded and came together to a very intense ending. I really like the characters! The author's storytelling is engrossing, interesting and keeps you wondering.

When Penelope ran away to marry Kincaid little did she know how much her privileged life would change. Her life in Shanghai was thought to be adventurous with her loving husband but she had no idea the trouble and women he would be involved with.
After his tragic death Penelope returns to New York hoping for peace but she is confronted by her nemesis Renee.
This book will keep you intrigued and wanting to the end.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and fair review.

Set in 1920's New York, Penny is ready for a fresh start after leaving Shanghai under suspicious circumstances. At a posh house party, old rivalries flare up and someone ends up dead.

This is an short but enjoyable "whodunit" with a touch of noir. The mystery resolves pretty quickly so you don't get too invested in the characters, who I didn't really connect with anyway. Not sure if I'll pick up the next book in the series.

What a great little mystery read. I did not expect to like it as much as I did, but I ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. This mystery was well-written, fast-paced, and very engaging. I enjoyed the characters, and I felt like I was in the story. Penelope is a widow, whose husband cheated on her with a woman named Renee, who worked at the casino she owned in Shanghai called the Jade Tiger. The book opens with Renee's murder, and we learn more about their background over the course of the investigation. While the person responsible was known about halfway through the story with little signs and hints, overall I thought the author did a good job of guiding us along. I enjoyed it, and I would recommend it if you're looking for a quick read one night.

Liked the plot but there were an awful lot of characters in this book. Loved the background story in China. The time period is great. Will read more by EW Cooper.

Unfortunately, this was not for me. I stopped at a quarter of the way in; despite being a short book, I was simply too bored to waste my time.

The name of this had me hoping for some more asian influence in the plot and character roster, but alas, we were met immediately with what were merely a bunch of white ex-pats who had returned to New York. The text literally mentions "back in China" once for about four successive paragraphs. I was not impressed.

I found the dialogue disingenuous, laid out in a way clearly geared towards setting the scene and filling in background information, rather than in a manner befitting organic conversation.

I'll admit that this tactic, though, did succeed in rapidly setting the scene for an original novel of near-novella length wherein we don't know the characters yet. It seems to intend to set up a series, but I can't say I cared for any characters enough to want to follow them through another mediocre adventure.

I think for another reader this would otherwise be a simple read for a car ride or a day at the beach, sans high expectations?

To begin with the positive, I enjoyed very much the author’s historical notes and wish they had started the story. They might have put me in a perfect place for reading the book. As it was, I found the narrative a bit disjointed and frequently looked back to fit pieces together and in the doing missed any building of tension present. To be fair, I read the book in the lead up to Christmas and it’s possible that the distractions of the season interrupted the pleasure. I will be so interested to hear other opinions.

This book was a disappointment. Although first in a series, it reads more like the third in a series since so many facts about the characters are missing or assumed. There is also a clunky shift in style as the story starts out as a classic mystery in which nothing much happens, to transform into a classic noir midstream. Unfortunately, the novel does not do anything to expand the noir genre, which makes the second half of the novel feel derivative.

The Jade Tiger is a fictional history murder suspense story in the late 1920's during a time when things for this family is all out of sorts. Blackmail, bad guys and crooked cops who do you believe and trust? Can't even trust your friends or what about certain members of the family? Starting in China all the way to America, there are secrets people hold and are revealed as time goes on. The characters in this blizzard story they take on a life of their own and so very colorful personalities. For me,the story started out slow but not only that,I felt like I came into the middle of the story when it's only the beginning. It's a fast pace story but it seems to me I should have known more information in the beginning than to start out blind. Received from Net Gallery!

The Jade Tiger by E.W. Cooper

This was such a fun mystery! Set in 1928 New York, this story is wrapped up in some high society drama and secrets from back in Shanghai. There are a lot of characters, and they all have secrets that are revealed slowly throughout the story. This kept me intrigued, but made for a bit of a rocky start, as we are just dropped in without any background information. Full of drama and mystery, The Jade Tiger makes for a fast and exciting read.

The Jade Tiger
By E.W. Cooper

I enoyed reading this historical fiction mystery set in 1928 NYC full of glitter, glamour, and the Prohibition, this is an exciting first book in the Penelope Harris Mystery series.

Penelope Harris is an amazing main character, and I just enjoy her colorful and oh so crazy past - from being once an opera singer, then a night club owner, with a murdered husband, and a certain ex-cop that stole her heart Penelope is one character you will want to read.

This fun murder mystery kept me guessing with all the red herrings thrown in, but overall i really enjoyed this and look forward to the next installment in this series.

This was a good historical mystery with an enjoyable main character. A touch slow at the beginning but once it gets going it goes quickly. A bit predictable but enjoyable nonetheless. I also liked the supporting characters and the setting of the novel.
