A modern update to a classic tale that never feels dated and reminds me of an excellent Star Wars-esque story. Would hand to fans of sci-fi teen and older.

I had a great time reading this graphic novel. Seeing this story retold in this fashion was fun and exciting. The bare bones of this tale are the same, but they get many futuristic spins put on them. As this graphic novel came to a close, it looked like the people of this fair city are in for a bright future. Fans of The Count of Monte Cristo may want to check this graphic novel out.

It’s a fine science fiction retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo and bonus points to any sci-fi title that’s a stand alone! It just somehow doesn’t quite stand out for me. It was ok and I enjoyed reading it but I’m not going to remember it in a few months...

This reimagining of The Count of Monte Cristo is so creative. Redxan Samud is betrayed and imprisoned by a jealous rival for his fiancée’s love. Much like Dantes in the original story, Redxan escapes and finds himself with a large fortune at his disposal with only the thought of revenge fueling him. Eventually he finds a fight bigger than himself and abandons his quest.

This graphic novel is set in a future world with some very advanced technology and weaponry. The world building is well done and the artwork is stunning.

I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this futuristic reimagining of the classic Dumas book, Count of Monte Cristo. There have been so many adaptations of the original work, it was great to see quite a few new versions of characters and even some of the major plot points. Without reading this as an adaptation, it is also a great story of revolution rather than revenge. I do not think the characters are very deeply developed, but the action and fast-paced plot do keep the reader interested. I am okay with my middle grade kids reading this, except for some brutal violence, so it is right on the border with YA.

Ibrahim Moustafa has created an engaging graphic novel in his science fiction reimagining of Alexander Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo. Count has a distinctly modern sensibility. It does not follow Dumas' story directly, but gives the main character somewhat different motivations and pathways while maintaining revenge as the driving focus. This makes the graphic novel both familiar and yet new for readers of Dumas' Cristo or those familiar with a film version. The elements of science fiction and imaginative approach to the main characters' crises and dilemmas are comfortably wrapped around this old story. It has hints of Star Wars and a somewhat Prince of Persia feel that makes it a more romantic approach. As it is a graphic novel, and there is action sequences, ~130 pages can only go so far, but it is a great gateway for young readers to discover an older classic novel through the lens of a more fantastic retelling.

A solid re-imagining of the classic The County of Monte Crysto comes to life in graphic novel form. This time it is not set in the past, but in a distant dystopian future, where our protagonist is betrayed when a man of noble birth becomes jealous of his relationship with a woman they both love. Good fight sequences and an overarching middle-eastern influence keep the story familiar, but give an entirely new spin.

I wasn’t really looking for a futuristic sci-fi adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, but it definitely piqued my interest and didn’t disappoint. There were a couple of things I would have changed, but most of it is just that I would have taken more of this story to show even more of it. No matter the adaptation, I always feel so bad for Mercédès. My favorite character was definitely Aru, whose storyline I really appreciated. If one of your favorite Star Wars characters is a droid, I bet you’ll love Aru too. Also, the sword was super badass. Will recommend to fans of sci-fi adventures and Star Wars.
