Heartbreak for Hire by Sonia Hart is an enemies-to-lovers trope. It is filled with somewhat comedies of errors, but mostly unlikeable characters that have minimal morals or likeability. Over all the book was okay, but fell a little flat for me.

Thanks NetGalley for the preview!

This book had so much potential and unfortunately it fell a little short. The characters were all mean and spiteful. I couldn’t believe how much drama was packed into one book. Mark was a liar and Brinkley was miserable. Also the cat sweater thing just was weird.

I wish I hadn’t put off reading this one, I read this in one sitting - it was so good! The premise was really unique and fun and the chemistry between the main characters was electric - this is very much an open door romance.

Heartbreak for Hire had a cute storyline. It was unique and the writing was good. The only thing I can say that I really didn’t care for is some of the dialect between the characters.. I felt at times the min characters were a lot younger than they actually were because of the way they spoke. But overall the book was good and I did enjoy it.

***thank you Netgalley and Galley Books for an ARC copy in return for an honest review***

This book had me laughing out loud the entire time. The author's writing of the main character's personality is witty and sarcastic and keeps you on your toes because you never know what’s going to come out of her mouth. I loved her relationship with Mark and was rooting for them the whole time.

Thank you to Gallery Books for the #gifted copy.

I love this romcom! Who doesn't love it when a woman is able to get revenge on men who have done women wrong. YES, YES, YES!!! That alone is worth reading!

Things I love: Fake Dating. Things I love more than Fake Dating? When one of the fake daters is hired.

Thanks to NetGalley / Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for a review.

Brinkley works at Heartbreak for Hire which is a revenge service for jilted lovers. I thought the premise was cute but I just couldn’t get invested in either the characters or the story for this one. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Ah yes, the rom com that has enemies turn to lovers. This was a cute romance where what you think you want is not actually what you get. A slow burn, easy to read romance that had me rooting for the protagonist. While not my favorite genre, I loved the name of the book as well as the cover. The blurb certainly helped in making my decision.

"Though we didn’t consider ourselves moral by any standards, we cared about women. We wanted to help our clients. In the world at large, men still had the upper hand, and in our own twisted way, we considered what we did an evening of the odds."

While in theory, a business created exact revenge on someone that doesn't treat others well sounds like a fun premise, the execution wasn't what I was looking for. I felt that there were moments when the MCs didn't treat each other well, making it somewhat uncomfortable. This was a book that I was extremely excited for, but unfortunately, it ended up being middle of the road and forgettable for me.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was a little light on the romance but some parts had me laughing out loud. I enjoyed the deepness of the characters and side plots were interesting. Like most romance books, it was a quick read. This one followed the "enemies to lovers" trope. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Brinkley Saunders broke her mother’s heart when she dropped out of grad school. What her doesn’t know is Brinkley abandoned academia to get into the literal business of breaking hearts.

Taking a job with the undercover company Heartbreak for Hire was never part of Brinkley’s career plan. But after having her own heart trampled on by her former boyfriend, Brinkley not so secretly relished the idea of being a part of something that makes guys like these squirm.

A female run operation, Heartbreak For Hire employs scorned women who work in different departments, all dedicated to varying levels of getting even. Brinkley doesn’t plan to work there forever. She just intends to work there long enough to bank some cash to pursue her dream of opening her own art gallery one day.

One night while out on a job she encounters, Mark, a target who doesn’t seem to match up with the usual sleaze balls stereotype. Despite her best judgment, Brinkley finds herself letting her guard down and fraternizing with the so called enemy. Knowing it’s wrong to mix business with pleasure leaves Brinkley feeling nothing but remorse. Still, she vows to never do it again. Then Mark is hired as part of the new male heartbreak division, ironically working under Brinkley directly. Now Brinkley has a decision to make, or she might be the one left holding the pieces.

Heartbreak for Hire has a fresh take on the romance game. The agency idea gave me Charlie’s Angel’s vibes and I could have totally see this working as a series, each installment dedicated to a different heartbreaker. Where things went wrong, however, was mixing in the male heartbreakers. The storyline excuse for this was flimsy at best. If Brinkley had instead, just fallen for her mark, I think that would have made the second half of the story seem less far fetched, and far more believable.

There were a lot of things I liked about this book (characterization, dialogue) but there was a squishy factor of scamming people I had a hard time getting past.

"Brinkley Saunders has a secret.

To everyone in the academic world she left behind, she lost it all when she dropped out of grad school. Once a rising star following in her mother’s footsteps, she’s now an administrative assistant at an insurance agency—or so they think.

In reality, Brinkley works at Heartbreak for Hire, a secret service that specializes in revenge for jilted lovers, frenemies, and long-suffering coworkers with a little cash to spare and a man who needs to be taken down a notch. It might not be as prestigious as academia, but it helps Brinkley save for her dream of opening an art gallery and lets her exorcise a few demons, all while helping to empower women.

But when her boss announces she’s hiring male heartbreakers for the first time, Brinkley’s no longer so sure she’s doing the right thing—especially when her new coworker turns out to be a target she was paid to take down. Though Mark spends his days struggling up the academic ladder, he seems to be the opposite of a backstabbing adjunct: a nerd at heart in criminally sexy sweater vests who’s attentive both in and out of the bedroom. But as Brinkley finds it increasingly more difficult to focus on anything but Mark, she soon realizes that like herself, people aren’t always who they appear to be."

A very original enemies to lovers rom com. Expected twists and a few questionable plot points. But overall, an enjoyable read. A revenge business? Yes please. Missed hijinks made me sad.

I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I really wanted to love HEARTBREAK FOR HIRE because it was compared to one of my favorite rom-coms, The Hating Game, but I just wasn't feeling this one. I love a good enemies-to-lovers story but the revenge plot isn't my favorite. I thought the story was just "ok." I'm glad I read it but unfortunately it was not my favorite.

Rating: 2.5 stars (rounded up to 3).

Thank you, NetGalley and Gallery Books, for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is one of my first books by Sonia Hartl. I love the concept of a heartbreaker for hire. This is so different from what is out there right now. I love the character. As a person that has struggled in the academic world. I really enjoyed this book. I laughed and cried. Love these two.
