Interesting dive into music history via a mystical jukebox that transports the listener to the era of the record being played. I thought there was a little too much going on--it felt disjointed--but I think the art will appeal to the intended audience.

Such a cute story I love the artwork! I really enjoy everything this author puts out! I enjoyed the relationship all the characters had and all the challenges each character goes through. I also loved the blended family aspect and all the diversity between the characters.

Jukebox is a great follow up to Chanani’s debut Pashmina. Hand this book to students who enjoy graphic novels with a bit of fantasy. And if they enjoy music, they will like it even more!

An absolutely charming graphic novel about the power of music, but more importantly, the power of family. I loved the dynamic of the cousins, the dad and daughter, and the uncle and niece,

Just finished reading a digital preview copy of Jukebox and absolutely loved it. The characters, illustrations, and storyline were all filled with fun and excitement. The shared love of music binds generations and the span of time covered by the travels in this book is a veritable treasure trove of classics. Can't wait to share this one with my students.

In Jukebox, Shaheen & her cousin, Tannaz travel back in time with the help of a mysterious jukebox. As the stress of the travel increases, both girls are pulled further out of their comfort zone on a quest to find Shaheen's missing father. Beautiful art & fun premise. Explores the importance of building relationships through sharing what you love with those you love.

Enjoyed the story about family, love, understanding, music, and time travel. Shaheen and her cousin set out to find Shaheen fathers after missing for a few days. They go to his favorite spot, record store and find a unique Jukebox that allows them to travel back in time. A story of love and the search for family.

I loved Nidhi Chanani’s Pashmina graphic novel, so when I saw she had an ARC, I jumped to get a chance to read it.

Very different from her last one. A story of the history of popular music, but told in a way that involves a magic jukebox that allows the characters to time travel to the time that the song was recorded or played.

We get to see Bobby Brown keep things calm after the Martin Luther King assassination. We get to see different artists performing, and learn a little bit of the history of when the songs first came out.

But Shaheen is not doing this for kicks, she is looking for her father, who has gotten swallowed into this world of records. They share a love of music, although Shaheen wants more than just music from her dad. When she finally figures out what happened to him, she has to use the magic of the jukebox to find what era he went into.

Very cool graphic novel.

Jukebox is a fun time-traveling graphic novel. I appreciated how the author connected music to the social aspects of the time it was created. I was so close to loving this book. The plot line was just a little too thin for me. The two girls were in and out of each period quickly without really exploring them deeply. Historical events were mentioned, but so quickly as to not give the reader a good feeling for the complexity of the time. I can only hope the peek at history is enough to trigger some research from more curious readers. Also, the missing father plot felt tacked on as a way to get the girls into the time-traveling jukebox. The resolution felt rushed.

Overall, a graphic novel that my students will enjoy. While the plot was a bit thin, the artwork alone makes this book worth reading.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A delightful and surprising middle grade story, though I’m not sure that readers will buy into the twist (no pun intended). Lovely depiction of the relationship between the MC and her cousin.

What a fun little love letter to music! I thought the relationship between Shahi and her dad was very sweet and relatable. The song choices were great also, and might inspire kids to look up some truly amazing, classic songs. Lots of fun!

This was a really cute mystery/time travel book. I enjoyed the story throughout. I love mysteries and this fit right in with the type of books I like to read.

Fun sci-fi, time travel comic for middle graders. A pair of cousins must travel through time by using a jukebox and vinyl in order to save the younger girl's father. Diverse, interesting, and super cute. Also deals with issues of anxiety and coming out to a very traditional family. Perfect for fans of Pashmina, El Deafo, and Raina Telgemeier.

A quick and fun graphic novel that meshes music history with mystery. Thanks again to NetGalley and First Second for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for feedback.

This book follows two cousins looking for their missing father/uncle by way of a time traveling...Jukebox? 🎶💿 It brings them into a different time in history based on the music that is playing. I found it very entertaining and interesting, wanting to know if the two could figure out the mystery before they ran out of time.

Nidhi Chanani has written a unique and marvelous story with a time-travel element that works much like the one in her previous title Pashmina. Shaheen's dad loves rock music--it seems to consumer his life, sometimes even getting in the way of his relationship with his Shaheen. Once he disappears without a call or text, Shaheen and her older cousin Naz start investigating. They find an old jukebox that sends both girls into the time of the music that was playing.

The story has many elements--including family relationships, time travel, and the history of rock music--but all blend together well. Nidhi's dialogue is engaging. The art is simpler and not as beautiful (at least in the e-advance copy I viewed) as in Pashmina but is still appealing and lively with great use of color

This was a cute, quick read that will appeal to music and history loving kids. It's also a great read to expose kids to music they may not have heard or been previously aware of. It's a fast paced book with beautiful illustrations that tell the magical story in an appealing way. I think lots of kids in my library will enjoy this book and I'm excited to add it to my collection and share it with them. Thanks for the advanced copy!

Jukebox by Nidhi Chanani is a heartwarming tale about the power of family and music.
The subplot of being able to travel via vinyl record was amazing but would most kids now even care? I enjoyed how family, history, and music were all tied together. I found the playlist at the end to be a great idea.

3 out of 5 stars.

This was a quick lighthearted read that delicately touched on lgbtq representations and a somewhat after school special vibe about morals. Although if future editions were to come out I would enjoy seeing more lgbtq aspects being added in. It felt like they rushed a character into saying they were bisexual and didn’t develop that plot at all. The illustrations and color use was very pleasing to the eye and grasped my attention well. Overall I thought this was a fun read and would recommend this to middle grade readers who love an adventure with a musical twist!

What a magical, fun book! I loved everything about it: the text, the illustrations, the colors, even the shading was just amazing. I also loved seeing all the diversity in the characters.

However, there were a few little things that didn’t make sense. Like how did Gio find the jukebox in the first place, because Earl didn’t tell him about it? It seemed like Gio and Earl were friendly with each other so why would Earl do something drastic like trap Gio in the past? And if Earl built the time machine jukebox wouldn’t he have realized that unplugging it while it was playing would take him back in time, and also trap him in the past? Why were Gio’s glasses broken? The girls found his broken glasses on the floor by the stairs at the beginning of the story which prompted them to go upstairs. So he broke his glasses and went upstairs in the owner’s area of the shop? I still loved this, but there were a few things that needed to be straightened out.

Jukebox is quite a trip...a trip back in time! Cousins Shaheen and Tannaz are on a search for Shaheen's dad. He's gone missing without a trace! As they visit his typical haunts, they discover that the owner of the local record shop, Earl, is also missing. The girls venture into the record shop and discover a one-of-a-kind Jukebox that just might be the key to finding Shaheen's dad.

The special bond between Shaheen and her dad and the struggles that they're facing as Shaheen is growing up make for a realistic and encouraging story about building bridges and reconnecting with those we love.

I loved that the author, Nidhi Chanani, included titles of YA books that Shaheen loves like Angie Thomas's On the Come Up and Victoria Jamieson's Roller Girl. There is also a playlist in the back of the book to help readers feel like they are in the story with Shaheen and Tannaz.

Overall, 5/5 stars for this groovy graphic novel!
