A middle grade magical fantasy and adventure set in a unique rainforest setting with hints of Tarzan for today's modern readers.

I have been a fan of Samantha Clark's since her debut middle grade novel, THE BOY, THE BOAT, AND THE BEAST. With ARROW, she continued to use a unique narrative voice and approach. I loved that the perspective/narration came from the Guardian Tree I found myself deeply invested in Arrow's choices, much like a mother whose child is reaching the age when they need to start making decisions for themselves, whether Mom likes it or not. In this case, the stakes go beyond the tree wanting to protect Arrow--the stakes involve the rain forest itself. I'm very glad I read this book and feel like it would be a great fit for a classroom discussion!

Arrow is an amazing middle grade novel for students that enjoy nature, suspense, and a little bit of magic! The story is narrated by the Guardian, who in fact is a tree. The Guardian has protected and trained Arrow, a young boy that lives in her boughs everything about the rainforest they live in. He has never met a human until the metal bird crashes into the rainforest. As the story proceeds, other humans come to the rainforest through the Amina curtain. As you might suspect, the beauty and life of the rainforest is beginning to deteriorate due to human environmental disregard. And when more humans enter the curtain, rapid destruction continues. Can Arrow save the forest? Can he learn that not all humans are destructive? Written with the budding ecologist in mind, any middle grader with an adventurous side will enjoy Arrow!

An immersive and engaging narrative. Fans of Clark’s first book, The Boy, The Boat, and The Beast, will thoroughly enjoy this new story. This book will be an excellent starting point for relevant and timely discussions involving environmentalism. The unique choice of narrator, the fast pace, and the page-turning plot will delight young readers. Highly recommended.

I am not the right reader for this book. I read to 35% but the length makes it unlikely I will purchase it for my library's collection.
