One of the that I love about these books is the relationship between Veronica and Stoker. They care and have a deep mutual respect about each but they have no problem questioning each other. Once they got together in previous books they stopped clicking as well. In this book, they are back to being their power couple selves. This makes the book just plain fun.

She’s curious, tenacious, feisty, full of pluck and devilishly unique! Now, Veronica Speedwell may be the only person who can bring peace between two nations, but can she pretend to be a princess and fool the royal court? Hits a little close to home, but our determined Miss Speedwell once again dares to go against the odds, while uncovering the truth behind an accidental death.

Deanna Raybourn’s AN UNEXPECTED PERIL once again pits Veronica against the forces of evil and proves that she has what it takes to come out on top!

I love this series! Filled with humor heart and heat, as well as the flamboyant Miss Speedwell, from the beginning to the very last page, this is pure reading pleasure. Not too dark, a little quirky and rich in detail, I knew one of my favorite heroines wouldn’t let me down.

Ms. Raybourn’s style is upbeat, her pacing and timing incredible and I love how her characters come to life with each twist and turn.

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Berkley! This is my honest and voluntary review.

I have LOVED every single book in this series, but this one fell a wee bit low for me.
The storyline was not the typical suck you in and you can't put it down.
I will still read anything that Deanna Raybourn writes, but I was disappointed this go round.

"A princess is missing and a peace treaty is on the verge of collapse in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

January 1889. As the newest member of the Curiosity Club--an elite society of brilliant, intrepid women - Veronica Speedwell is excited to put her many skills to good use. As she assembles a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene, Veronica discovers evidence that the recent death was not a tragic climbing accident but murder. Veronica and her natural historian beau, Stoker, tell the patron of the exhibit, Princess Gisela of Alpenwald, of their findings. With Europe on the verge of war, Gisela's chancellor, Count von Rechstein, does not want to make waves - and before Veronica and Stoker can figure out their next move, the princess disappears.

Having noted Veronica's resemblance to the princess, von Rechstein begs her to pose as Gisela for the sake of the peace treaty that brought the princess to England. Veronica reluctantly agrees to the scheme. She and Stoker must work together to keep the treaty intact while navigating unwelcome advances, assassination attempts, and Veronica's own family--the royalty who has never claimed her."

Stupid pandemic depriving us of a Lauren Willig, Deana Raybourn, Tasha Alexander book tour! At least there's Zoom...

The latest entry in the Veronica Speedwell series finds our heroine caught up in the politics of a small European country, where a member of her club of female scientists has perished, and whose ruler happens to be (a) missing and (b) almost identical in appearance to Veronica, thanks to her secret royal heritage. Veronica throws herself into solving both mysteries, with Stoker a more-reluctant-than-usual accomplice, as they try to figure out how their unconventional romance should proceed.

As always, Veronica Speedwell is an intrepid wonder. In her latest adventure, Veronica gets mixed up in the high-stakes world of mountain climbing in the Alpenwald, a tiny European duchy, and inevitably delightful hijinks ensue. If only more Victorian women were like Veronica; history might have been quite different.

Yet another adventure with Stoker and Veronica. This is a series that I enjoy so much not only for the interestingly woven storylines in each but just for the banter between Veronica and Stoker. I find myself chuckling out loud to myself quite often as I read their banter with one another. One can never learn too much about butterflies and taxidermy. This one takes them to new heights as they try to figure out how a freak mountain climbing accident was really murder with ties to a princess from a foreign county. As well as Veronica coming face to face with some royal relatives.

Stoker and Veronica are trying to mind their own business by preparing an exhibit at the Curiosity Club. A female pioneering mountain climber has died and is being memorialized at the women's club and they are responsible for the diorama to honor her. However certain discrepancies arise that lead Veronica to believe the young climber was murdered. Off they go on a perilous adventure to find the murderer; involving a missing princess, masquerading as said princess and nearly being murdered themselves numerous times.
Another rollicking adventure in this series all of which are incredibly entertaining!!!!

I really like Deanna Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell series, and this latest episode is one of the best (I found the last one very slow in parts)
Veronica and Stoker get involved in European politics, royalty, espionage, murder, and saving the honour of the Curiosity Club.
As in their best adventures, the plot is twisty and complicated and involves some familiar characters, and some new faces.
And even though the two protagonists have admitted their feelings for each other, the relationship of course is not running smoothly.
Fans of the series will enjoy this, newbies, should definitely read the first 2 or 3 books first...

It's always a good day when I crack open a new segment in the adventures of Veronica Speedwell and Stoker. I absolutely adore these characters and this series is one of my favourites ever. The mystery and plot in this particular book was quite interesting and I am always a bit blown away by Deanna Raybourn's creativity in keeping this adorable couple's lives interesting and moving the story along in ways I could have never expected. I really enjoyed trying to figure out exactly what was going on with the Alpenwald crew and the story wrapped up in a way I was not anticipating, which is always delightfully fun as a reader.

Ultimately, I will never not read a book in this series and there were a few absolutely swoony romantic moments in this book that also warmed my heart aside from the fun banter, witty characters, and fast-moving mystery plotline.

This is always a fun series, and this latest one didn't disappoint. Stoker and Veronica get to explore the ups and downs of their new relationship while investigating the mysterious death of a mountaineer. And Veronica gets to impersonate a missing princess, much to Stoker's dismay, especially when it brings with it an unwanted suitor. I highly recommend this series for anyone who loves character-driven historical mysteries. I'm enjoying the evolution of Stoker and Veronica's relationship as the books progress and look forward to their next adventure.

What a twisty turny tale from Ms Raybourne! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Veronica and Stoker’s journey to communication and openness, and I hope to see more in the next book. Bravo!

While a mystery set in the world of mountain climbing doesn't usually peak my interest, any book by
Deanna Raybourn is a must read. An Unexpected Peril was a great read with a bevy of likely suspects
and interesting plot twists. The author never lets me down.

This is book six in my favorite historical mystery series!! I totally loved this one!

In this one Veronica and Stoker are helping with an exhibit for a lady mountaineer who was killed on the mountains she loved to climb. While they are setting things up they are rummaging through some of her things and Stoker notices something about the rope that seems like it could be that the lady was murdered instead of it being an accident. Something Stoker later wishes he wouldn’t have said because once Veronica sees an injustice she must find the answers!

There is also a princess in town from the small country because they are the ones putting on the exhibit because the lady mountaineer had died on their mountain. They don’t want anyone to know it could be murder, but then the rope is stolen and the princess goes missing and Veronica must find out what has happened!

It seemes that Veronica looks a lot like the missing princess so they ask her to pretend to be the princess because there is some very important things happening and they need to princess there. Her chancellor isn’t real worried about the princess because she goes off on these tangents all the time. Of course, Veronica sees it as a great sleuthing opportunity, and Stoker is dragged along into another of Veronica’s escapades!

I really loved this one! It was so much fun! I love Veronica and Stoker and their batter was so good in this one! I also thought it was fun her running around in royalty getup. Though she is not a fan of anyone royal she doesn’t know a great disguise when she sees one. I also like that we kind of get an incite into Veronica’s real feelings about her royal family that she isn’t a part of. I also think the author does a great job of weaving a mystery around everything that was going on and I had a hard time trying to figure out who was bad and who wasn’t!

I would highly recommend this one to anyone who loves a great historical mystery!

Another wonderful addition to a wonderful series. Deanna Rayborn has created such a wonderful character in Veronica Speedwell. She is strong, intelligent, and full of energy. The chemistry between her and Stoker is just perfectly done and their adventures are always such a pleasure to read about. I’m glad this series is still going and I plan on reading them all from the beginning again soon. Perfect for lovers of mystery and adventure. Can’t wait to keep reading what Deanna Rayborn creates! Also the covers are all so beautiful!

Always always always look forward to this series. This addition didn’t disappoint. These 2 are probably 2 of my top 10 characters of all time.

We rejoin Veronica Speedwell and Stoker Templeton-Vane for their exciting sixth adventure in Deanna Raybourn's An Unexpected Peril.

I do feel like this installment was a little slower than the others in the series, perhaps because there had to be extra time devoted to creating the fictional country and princess of Alpenward. However, it still sucked me in, I was still very engaged in the story.

There's also some interesting turns with the character development of Veronica, who still struggles with her parentage (understandably), but also trying to balance not wanting to settle down but still be in a committed relationship in the 1880s. Her and Stoker's romance remains the heart of the series for me, amid the adventures and mysteries.

I continue to highly recommend this series, and look forward to the next book!

4 stars.

The continuing adventures of Veronica Speedwell. A visiting princess, and a questionable death of a young pioneering mountain climber leads Veronica on her lastest chase. Will she find out the truth before anyone else falls victim?

This series is one of my all-time favorites, so I was thrilled to receive an early copy of the next installment. I cannot praise this series enough--the world is amazing, the writing is beyond what anyone could expect, and the characters are just all darlings. This is definitely a book that I would suggest cozying up with, but be prepared for adventure and mystery!
