This middle grade was a fun adventure with the main character and two “friends” running through the jungle. I loved the atmosphere and the visualization of the kids on the elephant. Chaya was a fun MC, with her streak of rebellious behavior and her need to better the world around her, she was almost like a little Robin Hood. Stealing the queen’s jewels was so interesting, seeing how she snuck in and out, and then left the guards stunned by her exit.

I think it does a great job of showing how the separation of the royalty and the more common villagers really was and the unfairness of the situation.

The best part of the story is that it is an own voices creation. I really enjoyed getting a view into the world through someone who has experienced them first hand. I read this during a readathon and it was enjoyed by most who read it. It would be great for discussion in a classroom.

4 stars! Absolutely loved this book! The main character is mischievous in all the right ways and struggles finding her moral compass. Loved the vibrant characters and the setting. Would highly recommend for late elementary and early middle school readers! Couldn't wait to own a physical copy!
